I Make An Awesome Steampunk Walking Cane

- Join me in the workshop for this week's video as I take a brass water valve from my bathroom and turn it into the handle of the MOST AWESOME LOOKING steampunk style walking cane. Love cosplay? This is for you. Love all things brass or copper? This is for you. Love unusual costume pieces? This is for you! This cane is the coolest clothing accessory you could imagine - it's the king of all the cool accessories! Or something. Whatever, just enjoy the video :)

I think I'd just bought an Oak closet rod to make the wood part of the cane from rather then all the effort of cutting up a 4 x 4.
That’s rather mad cool. I like that octagonal-to-edged-square taper down the wood.

Was totally thinking of making one in woods but thinking about it now, I could totally use copper tubing!

Assuming you’re talking about the brass fittings, the clean brushed finish suits my taste. I like the shiny look :)
how grippy is the tip? i would imagine it isnt very good for smooth surfaces
It’s surprisingly grippy. It works very well on everything from carpet and grass to timber and concrete. I have not tried it on tiles, it might be somewhat slippery there but I don’t have many tiles in my house to test it on and while it is very strong and functional, I really did build it as just an ornament.
@@TheIdeasGuy good thing cane tips are a thing. It serves its function well as a decorative piece but its good to know its functional too
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea. But doesn't this design of handle cause a lot of hot spots and raised points on the hand that make it uncomfortable to use?
Thanks for the comment. When I decided to make this cane I also wondered if that would be an issue but once I had finished it and took it for a walk, I found that it is actually incredibly comfortable. Like, no joke, it’s the most comfortable cane handle I’ve ever held and used (I’ve tried maybe a dozen so I’m not exactly an expert but it genuinely is nice to hold).
It depends somewhat on the person doing the walking. If you've got a gimpy knee or ankle so you are taking the weight off it via the cane, I think you'll want it smooth and curvy.
As I mentioned, I tried it at the time and found it very comfortable to hold. A few months after making it, I had an issue with one of my hips and actually used the cane for a little while, putting a lot of weight on it. It never felt even slightly uncomfortable in my hand.
None of the ‘edges’ are sharp, they’re all quite smooth so it doesn’t cut into the hand at all. All in all, I’m super pleased with the end result of this project.
Can this be done with pvc pipe?
I mean, you could make a walking cane with PVC and paint it steampunk colours if you’re good with paint effects. I’m not very good at painting so it’s not something I would attempt.
It also wouldn’t have the same weight or strength but if it was just to be an accessory then sure. I made mine to be useable when I was having some troubles with one of my legs so it needed to be strong as well as look the part.
