So the thing with Namor in the comics is that he’s actually the King of Atlantis. However, Marvel Studios changed his backstory as a Mesoamerican to avoid inevitable comparisons with DC Comics’ Aquaman… even though Namor came first in the comics. Still the Mesoamerican theme really gives its own identity and love the explanation for Namor’s name in the film.

What's even sadder about Toussaint is that Shuri had been ducking Nakia's calls. The secret of T'Challa's son was a secret only because of Shuri being closed off and not mourning her brother's death, but when she finally mourns his death the gift of Toussaint was given to her.

Our first introduction to T'Challa was him in Civil War coming to terms with what vengeance does to a person and not letting him get consumed by it. At the end of Civil War, he said, "Vengeance has consumed you. It's consuming them. I am done letting it consume me." Couldn't help but see that great call back when Shuri says, "It already has." and then of course later on when she spares Namor.

I like the ending with Ramonda saying "Show him who you are," which follows what she said to T'Challa in the first movie. Also, Shuri's lines about vengeance consuming them and not letting it consume their people pays homage to T'Challa saying the same-ish line to Zemo at the end of Captain America Civil War. Beautiful symmetry.

    • @AshLee92490
      @AshLee92490 Před rokem +17

Yup, there are so many parallels between Civil War, Black Panther, & Wakanda Forever. One of my favorites is Shuri's big arc as the Black Panther. In Civil War, we see T'Challa as the Black Panther and his journey of vengeance and how he gave mercy, in the end, in the end to not lose herself. Then in Black Panther, we get N'Jadaka's story as the Black Panther and his journey of vengeance and how he let it consume him all the way to the end. Now, we have a new Black Panther, Shuri, and seeking vengeance, she has two paths she could follow, presented based the two Black Panther. Shuri had a choice to make and it all comes together leading her to make what she wants to do in regard to her vengeance: T'Challa or N'Jadaka. Each movie has an arc about a Black Panther seeking vengeance and it comes together beautifully in this moment with Shuri in the end. She let it consume her, but later decided to find peace... P

I love that Namor was ambiguous at the end, spiritually he is very faithfull to the comics. He's not good or evil, he's caotic neutral. He wants what he wants. If you share the same goal he works with you, but if your goals oppose then he fights you. He never negotiates. Soooo, I'm exited for Avengers because when the world is in danger someone just has to tell Namor and he will all of a sudden act like a hero. He only acts in extremes and it's very entertaining.

    • @juliodavila424
      @juliodavila424 Před rokem +6

But also, it points to something we see in the comics: yes, Namor and T'challa (or Suri) are superheroes, but they are also politicians. Whenever they go puch an Alien or defeat an army, there are international consequences. Heck, Namor is a member of the literal Illuminati (in the comics).
Namor wisely decided that war now didn't serve his kingdom. The way he sees it, he brokered peace with a powerful nation, and since in his opinion the world is about to come down on Wakanda becasue realpolitik, Wakanda will have no one to turn to, except the one other nation in the world that shares their interests regarding Vibranum. And guess who will have great leverage in those negotiations for alliance?

His actions in the illuminati seemed very lawful as he did things the other members couldn't bring themselves to.
Other times it feels like he attacks people out of frustration, or he does preemptive strikes before people have done anything. Then again he does always try to justify his actions as for his people or the ocean.
I think you're right and he does spend a lot of time on the lawful side of neutral. He definitely swings though.

That Killmonger scene was one of my favorite things about the movie. its damn poetry. He presents her with two ways of handling the solution, one that was more his way and one that was more her brother's way, and she kind of adopts a hybrid of the two, while ultimately honoring herself. Being a practical person, you can even see how that manifests in her suit with the sonic blasters and even in the design with the gold (killmonger) and the black (t'chala. Ah. I just loved it. Fanastic and emotional movie. A wonderful tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Loosely translated from Latin, "Imperius Rex!" stands for "Empire King," but it's a stark warning to anyone who dares to challenge Namor's will in the Marvel Universe. Namor is an Anti-Hero. In fact, Namor is often best described as an anti-hero in Marvel Comics. Namor was created by Bill Everett in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939 as an anti-hero who deeply resented the surface world for polluting the oceanic world in which he lived. The music in this film was great. Angela Bassett was excellent, and I hope she wins an Oscar for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the comics, Namor was also the first mutant introduced in 1939, but was only called a mutant after the introduction of the X-Men in 1963.

Why kill a main character everybody loves but recast a side character nobody even knows about? Chadwick wanted you to see the character and not him. Recasting Tchalla would have continued the world Boseman started which is a better tribute than killing the character he played forever. Chadwick doesn’t own Tchalla. Tchalla existed before Chadwick was born

I know it doesn’t hit the same for everyone, but its sad that all the moments about characters feelings the impacts of colonialism were cut from this reaction: it was the plot that actually hit me the hardest in this movie (out of all the other emotionally devastating plot beats). Especially that moment at the end where Shuri looks at Namor and sees the beauty of both their cultures, and the impacts of what would happen if this conflict over colonial interests pit them against each other, and eventually, wiped one of them out. Good reaction, though! Leititia Wright did, in fact, kill it as the lead.

This was honestly a great reaction and analysis to this movie! Throughout it I was emotional the whole way. When I heard of Chadwick’s passing and finding out about his battle with colon cancer for four years, it reminded me of how my grandma is fighting kidney and liver failure. Several years later and when this movie came out on Disney+, it was about a little more than four years of my grandma being on dialysis and it hit me hard. So seeing T’Challa’s funeral and Queen Ramonda’s death got me into a crying mess when I saw it for the first time. I never cried hard in a Marvel movie except probably Endgame and Infinity War, but this one was on such a personal level. I thank the crew and the cast of this movie for making such a beautifully relatable story about grief, revenge, and forgiveness, because it felt not just as a moment of celebration and remembrance, but I also felt it as a moment of healing in all areas. Hopefully you get to react to the rest of the MCU like Ms Marvel, She-Hulk, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday special :) also Secret Invasion and Loki Season 2 is this Year as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and The Marvels. There might be a possibility of Echo being released this year too :) maybe you should check out X-Men The Animated Series in time for the continuation that’ll come out this year on Disney+, X-Men ‘97!

This was a superb movie for the MCU. The story, the cinematography, the acting , the way it integrated T'Challa and Chadwick's passing, and the way the writers retconned Namor's origin that was so organic and didn't feel forced was just brilliant. My only complaint is that there seemed to be someone chopping onions every time I watched this.

Like, there’s more palpable raw emotion on display in those few seconds, than some movies can manage to conjure up even if they were to take all the “emotional” moments in the entirety of their hours long run time and combine them into a single unit/moment ffs!!😅
Now don’t get it twisted my dudes, there are tons of amazing performances all throughout this movie……but holy hell she is an absolute legend! Incredible……gives me goosebumps every freaking time man!😮‍💨🥹👌

This entire movie was soooooo good the music acting everything about this movie was great especially when the Queen says "I AM QUEEN OF THE MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE WORLD AND MY ENTIRE FAMILY IS GONE HAVE I NOT GIVEN EVERYTHING" also here's a pattern for the Black Panther suit
Everytime we see the Black Panther first dawn the suit it's out of revenge T'Challa for his father Kilmonger for his father and his ancestors Shuri for her mother I love Namor as a villain as well but I do have to say I prefer Kilmonger but Namor was an amazing villain

I went to see this at the theater less than a week after I had lost a close family member. Needless to say, there were tears streaming down my face nearly the whole movie. I would have cried dearly anyway because of the loss of Boseman, but I cried so much more because of how close it hit me. This movie will forever be tied to my last memories of that family member, and I like that a lot. It almost feels like a tribute to him just as much as it is to Boseman. This movie and a voicemail saved on my phone are my last solid memories of him

I felt the same way about Ramonda's scene from the ancestral plane, the execution was a bit weird. It seems they did changed that scene or at least recorded a different version where she says "Show him who we are", you can hear that line on the first teaser Marvel released, which is a recurring thing they do while they promote their films. Still it was a nice scene for Shuri and her mom.

Glad to see you reacting to this movie, happy to see another person enjoy it.
It's cool you kept mentioning the costumes, in every single interview I've seen with the cast and crew everyone praised the costumes and the costume designer because of how culturally accurate and how good and everything the costumes are.
Couple fun facts: Namor is the first Marvel character ever, published in 1939 at a point where Marvel didn't have the Marvel name yet.
In the comics Namor is king of Atlantis, however for this movie they renamed Atlantis to Talokan and placed it in the area of Central/South America, both to untether it from the DC version of Atlantis which Aquaman rules, but also to continue the Black Panther movies attempts to be more culturally diverse and accurate and such.
Wakanda and Atlantis in the comics constantly have beef with each other, so they used that for this movie.
As far as other suggestions, Wakanda Forever is the final project in Marvel Phase 4, so I feel it would make sense to finish the remaining Phase 4 projects you haven't done yet, which I believe are Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, because both shows and characters from both shows will be important in future projects in Phase 5 and beyond.
On the DC side of things there's Aquaman and Shazam, as well as specifically James Gunn's Suicide Squad movie and its spinoff show Peacemaker, aside from those the rest of the DCEU can be watched if you want, but those are really the only ones everyone likes and the ones that will be important for upcoming movies and the future of the DC film Universe as a whole. Besides those though, there's the Burton/Schumacher Batman movies, and the Christopher Reeves Superman movies as well and at that point you'll pretty much have seen every live-action DC movie since DC has been more focused on Animation and TV, most of which I'd also recommend.
Besides those though, still making a recommendation for Legend of Korra. I don't recall off-hand if you've seen Kenobi and Andor or not, if you haven't I'd recommend both. the other night I watched the Menu, it's an interesting movie that may make for a fun watch.

Notes regarding this film and the future of the MCU:
In the original script, T’Challa’s son would’ve had a more prominent role. Valentina also would have been a secondary antagonist.
However, plans for Namor were pretty much the same. In fact, Namor is a member of the comics’ version of the Illuminati. They decided to not include him in the Illuminati that we met in the Multiverse of Madness as they had other plans for him - those plans including Wakanda Forever.
Universal Pictures holds the film rights to Namor as well as Hulk. What that means in this case is that both of them can appear in the MCU, but Universal would have to be on board if Marvel Studios wants to produce solo projects for them.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like Nakia is as much to blame as Ramonda for sparking a war between Wakanda and Talokan. There were even two instances where Shuri behaved with a coldly demeanor towards Nakia, because she didn’t attend T’Challa’s funeral.
Regarding W’Kabi’s absence, Daniel Kaluuya had a pretty packed schedule and with so much going on they weren’t sure where to put him. Director Ryan Coogler confirmed that he’s currently banned to the outskirts of Wakanda. In the Latin Spanish dub, Ramonda said he’s in prison.
Despite not being in the film though, there is some artwork of what W’Kabi would’ve worn.
On a brighter note, I’m gonna miss Trevor Noah on the Daily Show but I’m glad he had more lines as Griot this time around.
I’m personally glad this film wasn’t too funny, but Riri and M’Baku helped to bring some lightheartedness during this hard time.
M’Baku in particular had some major character development in my opinion. Before he took that massive blow from Namor, he wasn’t looking before leaping. Then after Ramonda died, he had a lot to consider. Those traits and experiences are what will help him become the proper king that Wakanda needs going forward.
One particular thing that I like about this movie was that we got not one but TWO indigenous actresses from Guatemala. María Mercedes Coroy (Namor’s mom) and Doña María Telón (the elder Nakia spoke to) are both from Santa María de Jesús in the Sacatepéquez Department. My parents are from Quetzaltenango.
The film’s score includes edited versions for some of the soundtracks’ songs, but they didn’t add the film’s version of Alone by Burna Boy which includes an excerpt of Stormzy’s Interlude at the start of the song. In the soundtrack, both songs are separate.
Senegalese musician Baaba Maal who provided vocals for some of the background music in Black Panther 1 and 2 got to make a cameo singing at T’Challa’s funeral.
Josué Maychi, the actor who portrayed the shaman in the Zamá flashback, was also brought into the fold as a dialect coach for the cast. He taught them Yucatec Mayan.
Tenoch Huerta got to reprise his role as Namor for the Latin Spanish dub.
All you have left to watch now are Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Other than that, with this film and the Guardians’ Holiday Special, we close out phase four and enter phase five. We kick it off this month with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
In May, we’re getting Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.
Then this November, Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel team up to form a mighty trio: The Marvels. It recently got postponed after it was supposed to premiere in July. At least it gives you more time to watch Ms. Marvel.
In terms of shows, Nick Fury and Talos have their own limited series titled Secret Invasion. That’s likely coming in March or April.
Loki season 2 will likely arrive in June.
Alaqua Cox reprised her role as Maya Lopez from Hawkeye in her own show called Echo which is her superhero codename. The show is currently set to premiere this fall.
Riri may not have been allowed to take her suit, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of them. In fact, we’re just getting started. Riri’s superhero codename is Ironheart. She’s gonna have her own series later this year.
(A fun fact on the side: Dominique Thorne originally auditioned for the role of Shuri. She even got to do a screen test with Chadwick. So when they wanted to incorporate Riri, Dominique was their first and only choice.)
Agatha Harkness from WandaVision is also getting her own series titled Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Previously it was Agatha: House of Harkness.
Marvel Studios is also producing a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series picking up from the end of season five. It’s under the name X-Men 97. Most of the voice cast is returning, and a second season (or rather a seventh season) is in production.
We’re also getting a second season of What If. No release date has been confirmed yet, but Elizabeth Olsen voiced at least one variant of the Scarlet Witch.
Sam Wilson is also getting his own Captain America film in May 2024 called New World Order.
Valentina will also return in The Thunderbolts coming July 2024. She’s putting together a team of antiheroes. The lineup so far consists of the following:
    Bucky
    Ava Starr/Ghost
    Yelena
    Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian
    Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster
    John Walker/U.S. Agent
There’s several other projects on the way, but phase six will include Fantastic Four on Valentine’s Day 2025. It’ll be directed by Matt Shakman who also directed WandaVision.
Then we’re getting not one but TWO Avengers movies: The Kang Dynasty in May 2025 and Secret Wars in May 2026.
The Kang Dynasty will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton who also worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

I loved how Shuri goes through a similar journey that T'Challa's did. Shuri's recovering from the loss of her brother, just like T'Challa was dealing with the death of his father. Shuri feels responsible that she couldn't save her brother, just like T'Challa felt that he failed to save his father. They both lose another loved one at the hands of the antagonist. In the first Black Panther, Killmonger kills Zuri (Forest Whitaker) in front of T'Challa as he watches helplessly and in this movie Namor kills Ramonda as Shuri watches helplessly. Riri plays the role of the younger scientifically gifted sibling that Shuri played in the first movie, as she steps into T'Challa's shoes in this movie. Shuri is driven by rage and wants to kill the man responsible for the death of her parent just like T'Challa was in Civil War where he hunted Winter Soldier believing him to be responsible for his father's death. Shuri's words at the end when she spares Namor "Vengeance has consumed us, we cannot let it consume our people" are almost the same as what T'Challa tells Zemo (the man actually responsible for the bombing in Civil War that killed T'Challa's father) "Vengeance has consumed you, it's consuming them. I am done letting it consume me."

I just can't with this movie. The entire Wakandan monarchy and their hangers-on are among the least sympathetic people I've seen portrayed as protagonists in a movie, and the scene between M'Baku and Shuri, where M'Baku warns of eternal war, and Shuri's response is "So what?" and goes on to ask whether her mother's life wasn't worth eternal war and M'Baku answers "of course", without even giving a thought to what that entails, is the exact moment they lost me. Ramonda's narcissistic screeching about being queen of the most powerful nation and supposedly having given everything was bad enough, already. Good job to the writers for portraying royalty accurately, I guess, but jesus christ, the revolution can't come to Wakanda soon enough.

The story had a lot of disappointing aspects. The main one for me was how they handled Tchalla’s death. If it was such a big deal to recreate the heart shaped herb to save him.. how did the Black Panther have this “illness” to begin with? He already had the properties of the herb in his body, making him the black Panther, AKA superhuman. What would a synthetic herb do to save him that the real thing wouldn’t? So really I think they failed in paying respects to Chadwick’s death.

The movie would be perfect if it removed the CIA subplot and ESPECIALLY Val, she’s so annoying and unfunny.

Seeing Chadwick's smirk/smile gets me every time.

Movie sucked compared to 1st one . Also killing the best actress in Hollywood annoyed me massively as it would be awesome if she could be black panther
