He's the perfect example of how wealth does not equate happiness. Happiness is a choice, period.
@@UmdogTR YES, your mindset is the key! read a book of Victor Frankl and how he survived Auschwitz in 1944.
The things that helped Frankl survive were: Imagining conversing with his wife (who he didn't know if she was alive) whilst doing backbreaking work and being bullied by guards. To see things in a humorous light even if only for a few seconds.
@@UmdogTR You don't get to choose your environment (concentration camp), but you get to choose your attitude, and response.
I recommend reading "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl, it actually is written by the man who experienced concentration camp.
He is wealthy where he is though
he IS wealthy on a global scale, he is leveraging the privilege of his birth.
Basically you work a well paid blue collar job in Australia like mining for 5-7 years living frugally and saving, save up maybe 250K USD, build an extremely safe and diversified investment portfolio paying out 5% a year, withdraw only 2% and you get to live like him basically exploiting the abject poverty of Sri lanka paying next to nothing for basic goods and services until you die.
Meanwhile someone in Sri lanka with a similar blue collar job for 40 years will live in poverty for their entire life

Hi there,
Is it safe to live there?
Do they have a good health system? Like good hospitals. I mean quality.
Thx
I was there way back in the 80s and it was almost impossible to spend a lot of money. But humidity and heat is a bit demanding long term.

I applaud Kim’s approach to food. I had a 30 year career in the Food & Beverage business and I was an expert in Food Safety. Every time I am watching vlogs, I can’t believe more people don’t die from food borne illness because of what I see. I too would cook all my meals at home.
A PH CZcamsr got Guillain Barre from contaminated chicken.
I live in the Philippines, and my budget is US $1400/month for 5 people. I have $400/month in reserve. We live upper middle class in the province we live in. We are quite happy. We live 5 minutes from a small beach and 20 minutes from a much nicer beach.

I keep telling everyone at work, I'm probably going to retire early and go overseas and they just laugh, and laugh, and laugh because they think I'm joking. But, I'm not. The guy who sits next to me is in somewhat similar circumstances. He lost a lot of jobs due to financial recessions and so he has only been at this job about 7 years and he says "I will probably have to work until I die." and I say to hell with that! I have been there 6 years and get vested in the pension at 10. I won't have a lot of years, but I'll get about $1100 per month. Add to that SS, if we still get it, which I hope we do, and I'll be golden in someplace like Sri Lanka or the Philippines. And I'll enjoy the water and the sunsets and maybe have a few beers, but I don't drink anywhere near like I did when young, so I'll keep it under control.
Never been to sri lanka but i am in the philippines since 9 years now. Philippines isnt super cheap but with $1000-1200 you can manage
Greetings from Boracay.
Moving overseas sounds crazy to people who are rooted and comfortable in their house and town with family and friends around. Maybe they are normal. People like you are the black sheep, who for reasons of adventure or survival are willing to consider all their options and make a right turn in their life path. It is not for everyone, and you may find it doesn't suit you, so don't burn the bridges, and have a plan b for life back home. Dan covers a lot of the points you need to plan for in his site.
I am thinking about the same.. I am a bit older than you I don't want to suffer animore . I don't want to go without so I can pay for my gass if we going to have any for the winters. I am going in 2 weeks time DONT THINK JUST GO AND TRY I THINK WE ARE GOING TO BE SOOO SUPRISED Here is Australia ewriting going down like in England it's going to be a third world country lots of migrants lots of homeless

I am retiring early at 53. All i have is my rentals which gives a about $850 a week, i own everything outright. I am in NJ which is very expensive to live. I am moving to Indiana PA. You can easily get a 3 bedroom apartment for $650 a month and a one bedroom for $450. PA is very affordable. Living in the UK my monthly council tax, water rates, gas, electricity, internet, buildings insurance, car insurance and car tax far exceeds 400 dollars a month. Wow. I now have a new fascination with Sri Lanka. Thanks Kim and Dan for this great interview.
Absolutely love that bit about local stores and big stores having to sell at the same price. This is so great for local businesses. Any of us around 55 or more probably fondly remember our mothers sending us down to the local corner store for a loaf of bread or some milk. Most of those local mama & papa stores are now gone in our countries. Good onya Sri Lanka for thinking up a way to keep it going and thus keep local businesses and supply chains going. I think we'd all use the local if we knew the price was the same :)

No it isn't. Have you even been to Sri Lanka? The guy is living on the breadline like a local.
You need at least $1000.But a retirement visa, is provable 1500 a month income and 15K in their bank for two year.
Yeah, I love those ads which say 'Can you retire on $1M'?
You can retire on quite a bit less, the trick is to manage your resources.
We realized our SSi check would not cover our $2K monthly mortgage
payment but lucky us, we lived in a hot RE market. We remodeled &
sold it for a killing. Paid off the mortgage with enough left over to buy

That's a fine Buddhist country. It's actually really a Buddhist country. May be the only one genuinely based on Buddha's philosophy. All other Buddhist countries are a combination of Buddhism and something else. The Mahayana Buddhism of South East Asia is only half Buddhist in its philosophy the other half is influenced by what ever the original religion of each country was. Sri Lanka is pure Buddhism though. No mystic magic stuff or Bodhisattvas or" fat laughing Buddha ". The real Buddha was a skinny guy from Nepal. Sri Lanka is pure genuine Buddhist.
But Thailand and Burma (at least) are mainly Theravada.. Otherwise I agree

Your interview could be just your voice or we could do a zoom call showing your face. If you would like to be a guest star and share your story please leave a personal message here: vagabondbuddha.com/contact/
Thank you for your comment. The detail of your comment makes this real for people. If you have a business, service, or CZcams channel, you could share that on the interview. Best, Dan

I think $400 per month is about as cheap as it gets. I don't know that I would stay there permanently, but I would like to include it in my wife and I's slow travel.
For sure. :-)
In Estonia ,pension :400-700$€ per month 😊
Isn't inflation high there?
@@Anomaly66666 They don't have giant corporations gouging the shit outta them 🤔
Yessss love it
Such great info for people who have a limited income. This can be a safety net for so many.
I hope so.
@@VagabondAwake I work in the US with people on very fixed incomes and they often ask me how they're supposed to live on such a limited budget. I've advised some to watch your channel and explore their options abroad.
Great video! 🤍🙏🏻🤍
You have to decide what kind of life you want. :-)
Dan, would it be possible to do a future interview with your guest after he has had time to experience his new home base and surrounding travels?
Sounds good
I purchase my cinnamon and various other spices from Druera (Sri Lanka).
I will be looking at your online "courses"... Ready to get out of the States, enuff is enuff!
Great information
i am so poor and broke in canada, i don't know what to do, i have little savings left and about to go homeless, i figure 1 more year i'm going to be broke.
Hang in there ok , every day above ground is a good day. Your turn will come and you will enjoy. Be safe and stay true . Toronto .

Become an online English teacher at Engoo or Native Camp. No qualifications required. Then move to Cambodia where the visa is $300 per year. You will live very comfortably with little effort. Just keep a Canadian address and bank account to link your teaching account to. Solved
@@cameronparkes6629 but i love canada, i really don't want to move abroad. Anyways, are you being serious? i should check out cambodia? What about Thailand, it seems popular. I have no degrees, i am a native english speaker though, but have no teaching experience, i worked in tourism and refuse the covid vaccine, and i lost my job since.
@@cameronparkes6629 we might get rid of TURDeau and vote in Pierre, maybe Canada will change and be better?
i think the food is more healthy there and natural...makes quality of life go up.
Yes. Organic Foods And Fresh Are More Cheaper In Alot Of Foreign Countries Than Can Foods Junk
Great interview. Very informative.

Make a visit first. Nothing like Thailand. I love Sri Lanka and I love Thailand. I also love ice cream and steak.

Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 is a great place to travel
Glad to see Dan and Qiang in Srilanka. Welcome ❣️ to both. Please don't forget to explore upcountry where the Ceylon Tea is grown. Nuwareliya is lovingly called Little London by British 😊😊.
Very interesting and i feel humble man... thank you
Nice Interview...
The key is to not fall for advertising and spending ALL of our money. At least 10 percent of the money we earn is ours to keep...forever. That money should then be invested and will make money of its own. Or, we can follow the orders that we are being issued with.
This video has me checking out prices in Sri Lanka. I can not believe how inexpensive it is there! I'm seeing a lot of 3-4 beds, 2-3 baths, around 2,000 sqft for $200-$300 a month! WOW!
Life isnt just about money,-do you speak the local languages?can you deal with the heat?can you eat local food?are you aware that SL is a very conservative country?how is your health?etc etc
