_"Wah-hahaha! Now nobody play Mario Tennis except me, Waluigi!"_ _"Come-a-back here! You can't-a-play the game without a controller!"_
LOL 😂
I like how many of these don't even let you see the game, it feels special when a game starts up and plays through the title screen/opening cutscene/demos regardless of whether or not there's a controller attached. And of course Mario Tennis still has the best of these screens for how original it is
It feels like Waluigi was stealing the N64 console all by himself for taking revenge for not been invited into the tennis tournament. 🤣
Maybe that’s why Waluigi isn’t in smash
Yeah I’m testing out my n64 and the only game I have left is wrestlemania 2000 which is the most generic thing in the video. It’s been a awhile but I could’ve sworn some would still play the opening like when dvd menus would loop so I had to check it out.
As a child I was absolutely scared of Mario tennis’s no controller screen, the Erie setting, and intense match point music. It traumatized me, one time when I was like 4 my brothers locked me in our play room and turned it on and just left, I’m a grown man now, but it still gives me chills when I think about it
lol to me it was funny, I thought it was a pretty cool screen
@@Dash120zwhen I was in preschool, it was scary and sudden. Now I think it’s a neat touch
Match Point but there’s no controller for playing Game, Set & Match. 😂
I really love how non-standardized these are.
I can see a young child finding some of these messages scary, especially the ones with WARNING or ERROR in big text.
I liked the ones where they had a scroll on the title screen, or replaced the "Press Start" text the most.
...Actually the non-standard buck wild ones were my faves, But You Know
The Mario tennis one looks like one of the fake pirated game messages people were making so much last year
@@Daftanemone Yes
FINALLY the N64 No Controller Screen are getting some recognition it deserved.
I have a feeling this is gonna turn into a conspiracy/creepy pasta thing just like the anti piracy screens
Na, the switch say to “Press L+R or SL+SR on the Controller.”
10:05 that is so cool I didn’t even know that existed
10:05 ?
@@ThatOneSuperCircuitGuy that’s what I said
5:05 Interesting. That looks like the same font used in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
This message still haunts me since I used to see it a lot when I chewed on my original green transparent N64 controller (I was 7, don't blame me) and after that I got some cheap ones like 20 times and I saw that cursed message every.freakin.time
CONNECT.A.CONTROLLER.
Another video idea that's similar to this is to make a compilation of Nintendo 64 games that requires the Expansion Pak and see what would happen if your N64 console is running with only just the Jumper Pak in it.
Only 2 games flat out required it:
Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64. Perfect Dark can play without it, but the campaign is entirely locked without Expansion Pak. Only a handful of others recognize or are influenced by the Expansion Pak.
@@Hovergoat_Guy Make that 3 now with Dinosaur Planet
@@MrDmoney156 Was that a Japan-only game?
@@Hovergoat_Guy lol nah, Starfox Adventures Dinosaur Planet i'm referring
Wow this took some effort. Thank you
10:05 best one
I think some games had some alternate No Controller screens for if controller became unplugged during gameplay. At least I think I remember Pokemon Stadium games having them.
lol at the FIFA Soccer 64 screen being just the controller design and a question mark
?
🎮
Puffballs: THERE IS NO CONTROLLER!
Alright fine you want a controller
There’s your controller
Mission still fails somehow
glad you decided to put this together
Yay it's not lost media now.
How was it ever lost?
@@904funny It was just mostly undocumented. I never saw any of these until Mister AIG talked about them a bit ago. It wasn't like lost but it had the threat of becoming lost sometime is what I mostly meant.
N64 No Controller Screen is FINALLY getting the recognition it derserved.
@@WilfredCthulu yyyoure alive!~ yay
@@everythingpony Hello dear.
Alright! Just the video I needed to get my New Years party started 😎
This is a one-of-a-kind video.
Hey, wait! Where's Dinosaur Planet? XD
I love the video and seeing the aesthetic of these wonderful 64 games, but, there are some gnarly typos in here my dude
I find the idea of this message funny because if you had no controller in the console, what would be your first thought on how am I going to play this game now?
Probably when it usually happens is if the controller or the connector is bad, and it's there so that you don't think the problem is your N64
I was looking for this, I didn't even know these messages existed until a few months ago
Huh. Was there a thing that stated the game needed to have amessage saying there wasn't a controller for the devs or something?
I was just thinking that... it has to be boiled into the design requirements by Nintendo to see this much adoption, you know at least some of the games wouldn’t have cared enough to make one otherwise. I heard Nintendo was a real stickler with their best practices and requirements in this era so I wouldn’t be surprised
A small handful snuck through without it but yes it was a requirement
Snooplax made a video explaining it in detail.
That was a very interesting compilation
I know that it’s the same as the controller pak menu, but I like how empty the Ms. Pac-Man background is
Error, keyboard not found.

Please turn off the Computer, connect a keyboard and turn the power on
@@ThatOneSuperCircuitGuy That's not how PC's did it
@@tehaxor69
PS/2 ports are designed to connect the digital I/O lines of the microcontroller in the external device directly to the digital lines of the microcontroller on the motherboard. They are not designed to be hot swappable. Hot swapping PS/2 devices usually does not cause damage because more modern microcontrollers tend to have more robust I/O lines built into them which are harder to damage than those of older controllers;[15] however, hot swapping can still potentially cause damage on older machines, or machines with less robust port implementations.
If they are hot swapped, the devices must be similar enough that the driver running on the host system recognizes and can be used with the new device. Otherwise, the new device will not function properly. While this is seldom an issue with standard keyboard devices, the host system rarely recognizes the new device attached to the PS/2 mouse port. In practice most keyboards can be hot swapped but this should be avoided.
(Wikipedia, "PS/2_port#Hotplugging")
1:20: I'm surprised they actually bothered to animate the message lol
Also, I noticed the running theme of Comic Sans being used for these messages sometimes :P
It's weird how many of these don't say "hey you need to turn off the console before connecting a controller"
Because I feel like if I was a kid, I'd ram one in while on if this happened to me, and possibly damage my controllers
Bomberman Hero has a No Controller message, but only on the North American and PAL releases. The Japanese version does not have that error, and the game starts up with the Hudson logo as normal. Hudson definitely made that mistake on the JP release, but Nintendo fixed it on the international releases.
Some of them are creative, like Mario Golf, some or just plain out creepy, some went straight to the point, and then there is the ones that just say, "NO CONTROLLER" with a black background and white text with no music. Those are the creepy ones.
Ngl, some of these are kinda creepy
The thumbnail of this video is from the No Controller screen of Ridge Racer 64!
13:55 That's kinda creepy since you get it without even knowing it
We need to bring this back!
They are being brought back. The Xbox port of Undertale has several of these, including a special one for when the controller is disconnected during the date with Papyrus.
I wish they made those no controller screens for games like nintendo switch games or PS5 games, ya know
The no controller message from Resident Evil 2 kinda freaks me out! 😨
Took two minutes to notice the game names in the bottom left
imagine ur controller is plugged in but it doesnt register as connected and you see 6:00
I would run my mom
Nascar 2000? That one had two messages. One in the title screen, the other in demo mode.

I notice a lack of Japan-only games. Do they not have these No Controller messages or is there some other reason for their absence?
Japan-only games are rather hard to get for an actual N64 console.
17:25 - 17:30 i like to point out that ocarina of time has a basic no controller screen, when its sequel majoras mask Tells you specific instructions on how to plug in the controller, as if we are idiots
People would forget to shut off the "Control Deck" and just insert it improperly.
I think the scariest ones where the ones where it showed a controller instead of just telling you like in mp3
Edit: I meant Mario tennis not mp3
Sin and Punishment and Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) are missing here.
Instead of using one they all have unique ones
Great video
I did encounter that GoldenEye would not start unless a Controller is plugged in the P1 Slot.
I need to point out that there was an error in your description that caused CZcams to generate its own chapter list instead of pulling in the one from your video description.
16:35 Super Smash Bros. is just kind of unnerving to me for some reason. I think it might just be because there's complete silence, and it immediately shows that screen as soon as you turn on the console...
Interesting how some games supported controller hot plugging (Re-Volt (13:35) or Perfect Dark). Most games forced you to turn off the console
you'd think one game would have a photo of the dev team. who'd ever see it?
My project64 emulator is doing this to me and no idea what setting is screwing it up. Worked fine the first week or two I had the emulator, then I tried getting it to see a texture pack, which also is not working. lol
It seems like when I load a saved state, this gets bypassed and I can use my controller okay. But on new roms I'm downloading it may continue to be an issue.
In the right settings these could all be anti-piracy screens
Especially Mario Tennis
i think they are trying to tell me theres no controller(s) in any port/socket(s)
13:55 those 3 frame of move back forth really weird and out of place
Indeed it's so werid
Even if they are 4 but yes it's so werid
I remember the battletanx global assault one
It's a little jarring for some of the screens to have the game title in the corner while others don't. I understand that the ones that don't already have the title on the screen in the game itself, but it's still kind of distracting.
some of them feel unsettling
Does anyone know of any other consoles with games that display their own error message like these? This is seriously impressive.
Are there some interesting messages in japanese games and exclusives?
Missing NAGANO WINTER OLYMPICS 98 & Olympic Hockey 98
4:35 *warning* no controller
You missed the Mario 64 screen, where it flashes "NO CONTROLLER" at you
Boo to all the ones that are just plain white text on black screen. Have some fun, game devs!
You forgot Mia Hamm Soccer. Also, Legend of Zelda is misalphabetized, even if you alphabetize it under "The" (plus a couple other ABC mistakes) Also I thought there was more than one WCW game for N64.
This is looks like the meme generator font lmao 7:16
I like Super Mario 64 and Mario Tennis ones.

Yes it does

It's own error
1:15 & 1:20 & 3:54 & 4:55 My Favorites
Only shitty games tell you to turn the console off lol. Also the freakiest ones are where the startup or error screen overrides the game loop to force you to do that instead of just being a running message on the title sequence.
Odd how they call the console the Control deck
That was officially Nintendo policy... For some reason

I remember getting those messages at times. I think only or or two could be fixed by plugging the controller in. Most you had to turn the game out and then plug the controller in before turning the system back on.
