I think it was Trey Parker and Matt Stone who said that if you decide any topic is off limits for comedy, it then makes everything else you joke about offensive. Jimmy Carr's gypsy joke was not a great joke in my opinion, but it was just that - a joke. If people don't like it, they can vote with their wallets by not seeing him perform or watching him on TV. Protesting outside his shows is fine on my books as well so long as they're not trying to get the show shut down - it's a free country so we shouldn't discourage non-violent protests and freedom of expression. I've learned a lot through speaking to protesters, or speaking to people when I've been at protests

I do also know that there is a time & a place for darker comedy. Hell, when I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 20, I was telling cancer jokes to my friends, while hooked up to the chemo. Case in point, jokes about Harvey Weinstein - James Corden's jokes about this bombed, because he's a terrible 'comedian'. Ricky Gervais had people in hysterics. So it's not necessarily the subject matter that's the issue, it's what you do with it

Jimmy is one of the best UK comedian of this era. You hear his jokes and instinctively laugh because of what he says, plus his comedic timing is impeccable. You may think for a millisecond, should I be laughing at that, but then the humour in your brain takes over, and you laugh until your sides hurt. “If only Africa had more mosquito nets then every year we could save millions...
of mosquitoes from dying needlessly of aids." Jimmy Carr's comedy is ALL about subverting expectations with wordplay. It's clever, it's surprising and to be honest the subject matter is only incidental to the comedy.

There are two types of people who can't take a joke. Those who are offended for themselves, and those who are offended for others. Those who are offended for themselves need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Those who are offended for others need to get off of their high horses, and stop pretending they know what's best for everybody else.
