When people say they will talk slowly in these videos it always makes me feel like an idiot newb because I always have to go back in the same multiple times. Also thank you for not saying "and just click that" without specifying. Hope you know that you are an incredible educator.

    • @Vulpine407
      @Vulpine407 Před 4 lety +58

While I agree that NMM worked just fine, I believe that it had simply hit the limits of what Nexus (Black Tree Gaming) wanted to accomplish with their modding tool. You definitely have to relearn a lot, but not everything. Vortex can do the same things NMM can do (installing mods downloaded manually on your drive, downloading mods directly from the mod pages, etc.) but it has a lot of tools that previously you had to install and configure manually. In particular, the SSEEdit, Wrye Bash, FNIS and LOOT integration is most welcome. I can understand if you're annoyed, I admit I certainly was when the end of development of NMM was announced... -but to be "not impressed" I believe is a mistake. Unless you meant "annoyed" instead of "not impressed". In which case, just ignore what I'm about to say.
Vortex gives you a helluva lot more options and controll than NMM could over your mods. The ability to remove mods without catastrophic consequences for your saves is a lot safer now (though any mod with scripts is still a throw of the dice) and the tie-ins with the Nexus site are a lot better (and easier to use.) So what I'm saying is that I can certainly understand annoyance with Vortex replacing NMM, but I really believe it is a much better mod manager than NMM and worth the investment of time to learn it. And hey, Gopher's videos make it so much easier to learn.

@@Vulpine407 When I originally wanted to try to go over to Vortex my main concern was that if you already ahve a fairly complex collection off tools and mods for your game it would take a really lonmg time to transition all that from NMM to Vortex. It was the same back when I swaped from FOMM to NMM as well, but that wasn't forced upon me. Now that I have a new install of both Windows and all my games I welcome the functionality, but having to transition an already moded game is sojemwhat frustrating.

Typically the best practice is to grab all of the archives and send them to the new mod manager (with MO2 this was as simple as copying them to the new download folder) then revert your installation back to vanilla (reinstall often recommended) then enable your mods through the new mod manager software. It appears vortex does do things similarly to MO2 (no surprise there, same dev) so without trying this myself, I would suppose that the above method should work fine for you, however some update features may require that you update the mod ID in vortex, as NMM does not seem to create meta tags containing this information.
Due to the difficulty of migration, it is often recommended that users simply reinstall all of their mods through normal methods on a clean install. The above portion of the comment should only be attempted if you are reasonably comfortable with manual file manipulation, and risking the integrity of your game. As a further note, it is recommended that when changing to a new mod manager previous game saves are terminated.

I can see the utility for it; but I hate the aesthetic for Vortex. It's so clunky and visually inefficient; there's so much unused space. Then again, that's just my tastes; for I have a strong disdain for the blocky mobile application look. It's just like Nexus' new look, which is dislike as well (at least with that you can go to the old version of the website). It feels like the transition that occurred from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Maybe it will look different, and utilize a new aesthetic with more efficiency of the allocated space, in the future?
I will admit, I may be a tad bit too critical; perhaps it will grow on me, perhaps it will not.
Oh, um... ...great tutorial Gopher; by the way. I may not like the program (right now) but I think your explanation of it was superb; as always.

I personally prefer the old look and feel of things like MO and the old FOMM/NVMM etc. But I am an old school 'windows' gui user :) Let's face it, the future is touch screen ready UI, even on PCs. So I just try to go with the flow and focus on function rather than style ..... but yeah, I still miss the good old days of 8pt font menus.

This is a very good point of you to bring up. In PoE for example (a hack'n slash game where you trade a lot with other players), you have to use a 3rd party site to trade efficiently. The game developers thought it was stupid to have players use 3rd party tools, so they made their own trading site.
But their site is mostly unused because it has a lot of unused space, the item you want to buy is all the way to the left, while the price of the item is all the way to the right, so you have to constantly move your eyes to compare prices, while the 3rd party site has everything neatly set up in small squares which makes the process faster.

I actually like the design, visually. What i hate is all of the wasted space. I mean, come on! You could build a second mod manager inside all the permanently empty and useless areas in that screen. It's not like everybody has huge 16/9 screens in 4K or a touch screen/Wacom for *skyrim,* aside from graphic design, aka probably the area that designed this one. Pretty as all hell, yes. Functional for people aside from the designers, inherently not.

I've tried to use vortex but it's load order management system is plainly not as intuitive as the one in Mod Organizer.
Having to drag different mods onto each other and remember which one interacts with which is just a pain compared to having a simple list of mods that you can reorder appropriately.
Other problems I have with Vortex is that it doesn't play nicely with OBMM, which you need to use for some mods as Vortex doesn't support .OMOD's.
Edit: Another problem is that Vortex will always handle NXM links over any other app, even when you set it to "off" in settings and use nxmhandler to define something else (i.e. MO)

  • @root9065

If you're smart, you'll see right through this. What the owners of Nexus Mods are doing here, is replacing two perfectly usable mod managers (NMM & MO) with a proprietary solution that lets them show you ads, every time you open your mod manager. Because 1) the aforementioned mod managers weren't built with ad placeholders in mind, 2) some people use ad blockers in their browsers and they can't control that, and 3) not everyone spends a lot of time on the NM website where the ads are, once they have their game modded to their preference. They are just using Gopher as a way to convince everyone to install it, since he has tons of credibility in the modding community. Once the majority of people have installed Vortex, don't be surprised if the "manual download" option vanishes before long.
