Thank you for creating such amazing and important content on your channel. My wife and daughter both have ADHD, and everything you have stated is what I see at home on a regular basis. Burnout is very real and can be devastating to your mental health. I'd also like to add that another factor for always saying yes to more tasks is the need to 'people please' and to not be seen as a failure by refusing other work. This added workload, coupled with difficulty in time management, can often lead to burnout. Finding time for oneself can also be a challenge, as there can be feelings of guilt associated with saying no! Being there emotionally for your loved ones and offering to share the load is essential, and communication is key to success. Understanding from loved ones, peers, and management can really help someone with ADHD be the best person they can be. Understand their needs, help to plan their schedules, and discuss limitations without judgement and hostility.
Hey! Thanks so much for the comment and kind words, that means a lot.
And yeah, 100% agree! The people pleasing is a huge factor in burnout too! Saying yes to everything and everyone puts us on a backfoot, then that can build resentment over time in relationships too!
@BeUltranormal your welcome, I am learning so much from your content. As I have ASD, I find the emotional factors a challenge when trying to support my family, but understanding the challenges faced by neurodiverse people is the first step to truly help. The feelings of inadequacy and never being good enough can cause huge dips in mental wellness.
4:00 This is such an important point! So many people have told me taking a break means getting away from work, but that just brings anxiety. For me, "taking a break" means getting away from the current project or task while doing something else. Lately, that "something else" has looked like learning Croatian, painting/studying color theory, and starting different types of projects. (For example, writing email campaigns is a break from editing client novels.)
I think a lot of us neurospicy people have been told we're doing life wrong all our lives because how we do things just looks different to neurotypical people, but it makes sense to us.
Hey Cat! Absolutely, taking a break for us often doesn't mean 'sitting in a quiet place and staring into space', it means doing something where we don't have to self-regulate! So if that means picking up a new hobby, reading through an 800 page book on Sports Injuries or simply going for walks, then whatever it means for you is the best option.
I love that you're learning Croatian, that's so cool. :)
So true. Burnout is terrible. I have severe ADHD.
Burnout is real for sure
