- In today's video we go over a few-week debacle of breaking down, doing some basic checks, and what it took to get me back on the road.
These issues aside, I love this bike through and through. It is an incredible piece of machinery and I still HIGHLY recommend swinging your leg over one and finding out for yourself what makes them so great.
Thank you for watching and the continued support!

welcome to the family, you picked the worst time ever to buy a new harley.
I remember the days of no camshaft sensors and ecm's. Nobody had to communicate with anybody. A simple spark would do.

@@raybrensike42 I remember when my carbs got crapped up from sitting a week, take the good with the bad peoples...lol
@@tymobyrne4451 Exactly. I remember when 100hp was something for a HD. Now you can have an M8 making 170+ hp all motor...
I remember in 2015 when I was about to buy a Harley but went with a Yamaha Stryker... no issues ever in all the years of owning it. Still rides great...
Really miss the old days--no processors, no mysteries, easy to fix and ride on. My 13 year old Road King Classic, fingers crossed, keeps truckin'.

💯 with you. I’m a fan of the new street glide styling other than the bags. I don’t care at all for the Tesla concept with everything on a stupid big screen.. Although my 16 street glide gauges aren’t mechanical, I very much prefer what they are over the new street glide.. I ALMOST had myself convinced to look past the dash and the bags and buy a new bike, but a friend of mine is a Harley tech told me the new ones have issues and hold off at least for a year or two.
Not a fan of Harley’s current trajectory and there is literally ZERO wrong with my 16 street glide so really no point to downgrade it to something that has issues and parts I don’t care for. Pretty much convinced to just keep what I have and make them even more mine. Although either 16 and 13 Harley’s are mechanically sound and don’t NEED any upgrades I’m pretty convinced that’s the avenue I’ll be taking. I very much prefer the sound of a twin cam over a M8 anyway..
Funny thing to me. People seem to always talk about how Harley needs to do things differently to attract the younger crowd. Been hearing that for pretty much ever. Just 10 years ago if you told me I would not only own but enjoy a “geezer glide” I would call you insane, but here I am. I ride with a mix of people on a mix of bikes, motley crew in both generations and types of bikes. Not uncommon to see metric bikes, sport bikes and such in our pack.. I hangout with several guys and girls in their mid to late 20’s up that are on “geezer glides”.
Even 13 years ago they had multiple computers to control different things.
@@PotatoeJoe69 I know that, which is why I said "fingers crossed." But hopefully, since my Road King has fewer systems, the coding in the processor is significantly more straightforward, less complicated. Ride safe.
The issue is that the more wiring and modules there are, the lower the likelihood that a failure can be fixed in 10 years time 8(. I have a 2004 Mazda rx8, could have been mechanically totaled when someone crashed across my bumper because the headlight was scratched. A new unit is worth more than the car is. Luckily, that’s on the later model years. Mine is not a sealed beam light, so a junkyard replacement was fine.
Its no surprise since HD spends more R/D money on new clothing line than on actual motorcycle development.
No brainer..more profitable
Marketing is how you sell substandard products and get people to believe you are actually buying "premium". Ask any fanboy and you'll see an example.

We saw this issue with one of our customer’s bikes. A huge prevention is to wait for the bike to fully boot up before you hit the starter. People are turning on the ignition and immediately hitting the start button before the system checks, etc. can be made. Make sure your battery is good too.
As a new bike owner you have a HOG membership that includes towing.
Good information once again, thank you! I always leave the bike on a Harley 5 amp trickle charger. In this circumstance there was a physical short to ground somewhere in the main harness. I don’t blame the moco or even quality control. These things happen from time to time in any market. Just did a thousand mile loop around Wa state and bike did great so I’m a happy camper.

Harleys have always had problems, but we used to be able to figure it out.
@richardbeucler6425 Hmmm .certainly not in my case of tbe 4 Harleys I have owned since 1989 .All I had to figure our was how to replace batteries, plugs and oil.
Nothing else went wrong .
A head has been replaced as well as the infotainment screen being replaced on my 24. Worst thing I’ve done in a long time was buying this bike.

Seriously, I understand why Harley makes that call after a few hours, but it’s like watching a movie and turning it off right before everything unfolds. I’m an engineer, I want to know exactly what happened..
I have been riding over 50yrs now. I have owned many brands of motorcycles , have had many Harley's. I love my 2017 street glide , but that's when I started to have a few electrical sensor problems. Never had a problem with my 2000 road king. I also have a 2013 Honda Gold Wing F6B. I have never ever had a problem with the Gold Wing. My Harley has left me stranded in the middle of no ware , and that's the roads I like to explore. My Gold Wing has never stranded me. I won't let my buddies ride my Gold wing B/C if they do they will sell the H.D. and buy a Gold Wing.
With all the motorcycles that exist, I am dumbfounded that people still buy Harleys.
What's crazier is they are threatening to boycott Harley because of the CEO supporting LGBT and DEI, but they never thought of boycotting due to unreliable overpriced products.
u dont ride a harley davidson.....if you dont ride a harley davidson.....the name is a prestige.......nice prestige when youre stuck on the side of the road
All breeds of motorcycles have their inherent issues. It’s just that there’s more Harleys on the road in the USA so it’s going to be higher profile. Yamaha had ground spider corrosion issues. BMW has electrical issues and the old R1150RT had a transmission input shaft that was stupidly too short and would sheer off the splines. There’s other examples but I made my point
@@patcady310 they all have problem.....but harley take the cake....in every category
@@patcady310 That's not true. There are plenty of Goldwings on the road, and you never hear about issues from them. I have a Yamaha Roadstar 1700. There are some with over 150,000 miles with nothing but oil, tires, spark plugs, and brakes.
Victory and Indian are both more reliable, same with the Honda VTX series. Harley riders even tell you, "Don't get one if you're not mechanically inclined. Their manual even says their bikes are "supposed" to burn oil. There are multiple videos on youtube of people with major electrical issues with the 2024 models and getting the runaround from the dealership.

Makes one appreciate the era of carburetors, points, no computers. Hearing a lot of stories like this for many new vehicles. We're supposed to be going forwards technically but in many ways it's the opposite. Fifty years from now you probably couldn't restore one of these new bikes. Too many chips and code lost to time.
Spot on, the new bikes are meant to be thrown out and not rebuilt like the old stuff. Our throw away society.....
I mean... if you want archaic, outdated, slow and sketchy bikes, sure, go ahead and run back to carbs and spring forks.
If you want something fast, safe, comfortable, it's just a matter of not using cheap electronics and components. Clearly Harley Davidson is trying to build all of these newer bikes like they are Chinese scooters of yesteryear; cheap electronics, cheap mechanical components, pass the failures onto the consumer.
Harley Davidson has had its prime time in the past, and the throne has long since disintegrated to the dirt they're rolling around in right now.
@@Bacon676 If you want something that you're mostly helpless to work on in the middle of nowhere because it's full of chips and code likely written by nerds who've never ridden a motorcycle, run to everything futuristic and scoff at everything from the past. I have a 24 CVO RG and I put a full header on it with wide band sensors and the HD auto tuner. Took it across the country from Idaho to Florida over 2 weeks 5200 miles. Bike is currently at 6400 miles with no major issues. My windshield delaminated but was replaced under warranty. I did get the regular check engine light on while riding through Wyoming but it ran fine then went off as I crossed into Colorado so I joke that my bike just doesn't like Wyoming air. Great video, here is hoping I have no major issues. Wish HD did more than 2 years on factory warranty but is what it is. One thing I will say, for some reason 24 CVOs have to be taken into the dealer to have the Screaming eagle tuner tune loaded... I tried everything with it including getting the USB to PC cable but it just throws a "headlight failed to turn off error". Talked to HD support on phone for 2hrs and they said I had to take it to dealer bc they have to plug into the mainframe diag machine and upload a special file. Needless to say that was a bit infuriating being the tuner states that you can use it at home with your smart phone. End of day the wide band tuner is on, and HD loaded the stock map with the screaming eagle tuner for me.
Ahh...the cam shaft sensor code. I spent 3 months trying to fix this particular code....1 year ago...on a 6 month old Pan America. They were down to swapping out the engine control wiring harness and it was going to be months before the replacement came in. No guarantee that would fix it. A the same time the clutch gave out on my 2023 Street Glide. "2 bikes and $80k and I'm not riding?" I gave up and traded out of HD.
Very informative, I own a 2024 RG, still riding the break in miles, so far so good, this video is the first I’ve seen regarding diagnosis of an electrical issue, thanks. Warranties are worth the money on all new changes of a product

The same thing happened to a friend of mine. Same bike same year. Turned out to be the ECU and battery. That happened within 50 miles. 10000 miles later he's had no problems

My 2017 has been dead nuts reliable, never once left me stranded despite all the early M8 concerns.
My 2020 has also been reliable for 17k miles so far. The first battery I had in it even lasted 4 years before it started acting up
I also have a 2017 SGS with absolutely zero problems except for an oil transfer to primary which was solved by me with HD venting hose. Pretty reliable and fun to ride.
Can you go to your diagnostics page, reset the code, then turn the bike off. And walk a few feet away to get your fob away from the bike for a few minutes. Then when you go back to the bike start it. Might have to reset codes a second time.
Also, the traction control light flashes until you hit 5 mph

Sorry you had to go through with it but I think this is a blessing in disguise for you. Better now than later. Wiring harness issue is probably known. That may be why the dealership and the corporate quickly okayed it. Glad you are safe.
I fully agree, I just keep my fingers crossed I don’t have real issues on the long hauls!!

That's exactly why I've ridden Gold Wings for the past 35+ years... I HATE mechanical problems, especially on a road trip. I've had random issues, but only been stranded once (in about 1982, on a 1977 Gold Wing [with 50,000+ miles on it] coming out of CA on a 5000 mile trip from WI. (The problem was a e-clip holding the transmission driveshaft coupler to the rear wheel unit. The e-clip expanded, the coupler backed off from the union, and the drive became uncoupled. Simple fix. I took the drive apart in a dealer's parking lot (they didn't have time to work on it, but allowed me to work on it on my own). I paid them ~$2 for a new e-clip (I bought 2, just in case!). Good to go -- for many miles after that!
Since then, I've had other Wings with minimal issues for many years. The kinds of issues described here are... unbelievable. 5000 miles on these HD bikes should considered "break-in miles." The electronics are getting in the way of just making the bike run and just riding.
I was doubting between a 2023 anniversary road glide or a 2024 model and I am lucky that I chose the anniversary model, it is also much nicer and retains its value better
Does HD not know WTF they are doing anymore?
A wiring harness issue, consider yourself lucky. Wait for the engine problems.
I'm surprised they don't violate the warranty because you are smart enough to work on it.
I also thought that in worst case you could rent a 24 foot truck, or just a regualr size truck with a Uhaul motorcycle rental. 24 footer may be overkill. When I was your age I wouldn't have been able to do that. But maybe you could. Looks like in the replies below a Hrley rep mentioned the ow would have worked. But those damn warranties are tough. All of a sudden you need a tow in the middle of no where between paydays and the hotel says oh sure. Unless you could get a Harley re[p on the phone to the hotel . By that time you would know whether to rent a Uhaul or let Harley show up and tow it. You might be days away from your house. So Harley would be in for a motel and food for the tow truck. And what if you had your girlfriend with you. Three people out and stranded. They are really nice when they sell the warranty. I hit a few nails on my new bike late after midnight and ended up at a gas station all night. The warranty people couldn't find anybody to take a bike. I've been towed few times now.Twice I watched my bike go away on a 30 foot roll back because there was nothing else around. One time the mechanic had an old beater trailer. the bike fell through the rotted wood of the trailer. You are good at these videos. You know trouble is coming so you mightbuy a trailer and have a tow hitch put on your 4 wheel ride. Hide yoour key so a friend can come pick you up,
Thanks for the video great info I got 12000 miles on my 24 street guide
Wait until the headlight fails, and it will. $1800 for the part alone. New headlight bulb for my 1998 Fatboy, $12.00.
If the headlight faults I’ll do the Baja designs A10 Moto setup!🫡
This is why I only ride and drive Japanese machines. If barely maintained they never don’t work; and you don’t have to stop every mile to pick up all the parts that fell off.
I had to get a whole new Wiring harness under warranty, and did not ride the Bike for a Couple of Months. The wiring harness Melted on my 23.5 CVO Street Glide
sneaky rear suspension change over this time lapse.
I haven't finished the video, but clearing the code would of been the first thing to try and see if it comes back.
When you have an open to ground and know the ECM and sensor are good, the next step is to check the resistance on the sensor ground wire. If that show the open you have two option, run an overlay or replace the harness. Seems straight forward to me and since it is warranty covered they aren’t going to want to dish out extra tech hours to have the tech pull apart the harness and trace the wire to the break at that point. Hopefully they send the harness back to corporate to investigate for TSBs later on. My guess is either shiity manufacturing of the harness or your full exhaust with no shields melted something. If it was a melted wire it is better that they didn’t find out because it probably wouldn’t be covered under warranty since there are no heat shields.
Heat shields are only on the outer tube. Hard to believe they would protect on the backside of it. Logically one would think it would generate more heat. I just put this same exhaust on yesterday, so hopefully I don’t have the same issue.
Almost pulled the trigger on a 2024 Low Rider ST today. Starting to get doubts about HD.
Zero issues with my 2023 Low Rider ST-over 6000 miles, PURE JOY!
Yeah don’t let these few rare circumstances stray you away, follow your heart, buy the bike and enjoy life to the fullest, whatever that is! Despite my couple of issues I’ve run into, I have no regrets spending my summer on this incredible machine and am looking forward to so much more!🙌
My ‘22 ST is solid as a rock.
Buy the bike, even with my adventures I am glad I did!
Hell of a place to put a sensor, but that's where the cam is so that's what happens. But I tell you right now heat and electronics do not mix.
