Akio Ohtori was Dios all along, bitter over the fact that his rashful decisions made him a human instead of an idealistic prince everyone worshipped. He seeks to become Prince Dios and revolutionise the world once again by he does so by resorting to unforgivable acts like sexually abusing Anthy and manipulating Utena along the way!!

I don't know, I honestly enjoyed the anime a lot more than the manga (one of those rare moments for me). Nanami doesn't really have a huge role in the manga. She is only mentioned, and I really liked her character in the anime. She brought a lot of comedy. XD I think she also gave more depth to the story.
