  • Hammered copper coffee table made from an old heating cylinder. I had an old cylinder at home which had been removed from a house as it was leaking. Rather than just scrap it I decided to turn it into something so I came up with the idea of a coffee table!
    Originally I had thought of just polishing it smooth but when I opened and cleaned it there was a seam running down and there were some kinks in the copper which i don't think would have looked great on a polished top. This is when I decided to give part of the top a textured hammered look with the seem acting as a break to the smooth section.
    I think it gives a nice look having a mix of the hammered and smooth finishes.
    The copper is sitting on 18mm plywood which is doubled on the edge to give it some thickness. The size of the top is 1000 mm x 550 mm.
    The frame is made from the parts of an old bed from Ikea the size of which is 40 mm x 40 mm. The total height of the table is 450mm.
    Thanks for reading and watching!

    Except for the endless hammering, this looked like a lot of fun! Then again, hammering can be its own fun. 😅

      The copper seam was the actual seam from when the barrel was made. He only textured on one side of that seam. What a cool detail, and a creative use of an "imperfection"!

    Wow - very nice! I like the way you used the seam to your advantage, design-wise - looks great. I don't know what must have been worse: having to do all that banging or having to listen to all that banging 😀 Totally worth it though.

      I can't decide yet, at first I thought a BBQ, bird bath or a small water feature out of the ends (I don't think the BBQ will last and I don't want a bird bath 🙄 ) and I don't really need another coffee table so it might just end up as a lot of small projects, I think I will let it rest for a while at the moment 👍 😉

      Thanks Jeff. Most of them are in Ireland and the UK anyway, I dont know about everywhere else. They can also come in stainless steel.
      The one I used came from a neighbour who had to remove it as it was leaking. If you know any plumbers I would start there and then maybe a metal recycling facility.

    What is the copper's thickness? 2-3mm? I am assuming the colour on the sheet's bottom side is natural verdigris, but on the top surface, did you apply any type of lacquer/sealant/varnish to prevent oxidation? I looked up that G3 paste, and its instructions only say that you should «For a high gloss finish, follow with G3 Fine Finishing Compound». Gorgeous job, and thank you!

    • @EamonWalshDIY
      @EamonWalshDIY  Před 4 lety +3

      Thank Bruno, The thickness is only about 1 mm -1.5 mm I would say. I did not put any finish on but I may in the future, I want to see how it looks after a while. If it darkens too much I will just polish it again and then apply a finish to seal it. I used that paste to remove some of the scratches in the copper. Ideally the paste should be used a polisher and you would get a mirror finish.

    Cool table. I just wish you had filed the cuts at the corner of the copper then sanded them before folding it up. I know someone ia going to tear up there trousers, or there leg on it.
