Ermita, Philippines 1993

A short 3 minute video showing the remains of the lively bar area in Ermita, Manila. The bars were closed down one by one, circa 1990, by the Mayor, the late Alfredo Lim. He threw thousands out of work and the former premises remained derelict for years afterwards.

In his second go around as mayor, Lim closed the Baywalk bars and restos which were very popular and economically successful in 2009. They replaced that with Dolomite Beach which is made from a toxic mineral and is eventually going to end up in the bay when another typhoon blows in from the west. These Filipino pols sure know how to screw up a good thing.
