Just took care of this on my fridge. No dust. Dust (mere dust) is tiny floaty particles. The coils were encased in a solid fruitcake made of dander and fur, mixed together with natural or synthetic fibers, through the action of heat, moisture, chemicals, and kids slamming doors. Should be waaay more efficient now. Dare I say, amplified!

@@kendaljohnson6692 Nice! That means your fridge is working much more efficiently, and you can turn down the thermostat - it'll keep things as cold as it did before (without freezing anything) but the compressor will run less, and save on your electric bill. Nice job!

I vacuumed the coils under my family's Maytag refrigerator the other day. I was surprised by how much dirt came from the refrigerator coils and back of refrigerator. Food is colder in refrigerator and freezer. The video is very helpful. I told a friend about how to clean a dryer vent featured on Amplify DIY. A friend considered cleaning their dryer vent and dryer.

colder. A $500.00 power panel was replaced a year ago. Vacuuming the condenser coils under the refrigerator and rear is worth
it. The electric bill is lower.
First off, we used to do that fridge joke a lot when I was young. Second, thank you on just how to go about cleaning the coils. And, that putting cardboard down. My floor is just so scraped, but when I redo the floor I will remember that tip. Also, I like the idea of a flexible crevice tool, great.
This is one of those things the manufacturers never seem to mention in the manuals, but I've been doing this annually for at least 30 years. If you do it that often, you will find that the coils never get a severe enough buildup to significantly affect efficiency in a normal home.
I have what I believe is a condensate drain tray beneath my coils, if some of that water gets flung up from the compressed air will it cause an issue? There is some circuitry on the right with the blower fan but I can't see behind the coils...
Very well done video. I suggest warning folks to be aware of their water lines. Not everyone has as much slack as you do. If they haven’t moved their fridge before, go slowly and visualize how long the line is. Be especially carefully if it is copper tubing. I have installed a braided stainless steel hose on mine for extra protection from leaks and ease of movement for cleaning. The before and after pics were very effective.

Good video!! Another brush you can use when doing this is a small (1 to 1 1/2") paint brush with bristles about 3" long. Small enough to get in close places, and soft enough to be safe, but stiff enough to do some cleaning. I had an Amana side by side fridge that had coils like the garage unit you show, and it was pretty easy to clean. My current unit is a Frigidaire Gallery side by side, and I have looked under it for the coils, and didn't see any. Methinks I need to pull that heavy dude out, and access the coils at the rear, like your kitchen unit. Good day today, as I learned something. You'd think that by 74 years, I'd know it all, but...... 😁

Thank you so much I've paid two different repair companies hundreds of dollars without solving the problem of my freezer over working in my refrigerator getting warm. One repair company came eight times another company came once. Not one repair or man cleaned my refrigerator coils or even pulled it out away from the wall. They replaced every part possible and failed to resolve my problem. I just cleaned my refrigerator all by myself after watching your video and my refrigerator is now finally working normally after paying hundreds of dollars to repair men

The first time it will take at least 45 minutes to unplug, pull out, vacuum, use brushes and compressed air, then vacuum again, put the cover back, push back into place, and plug back in. Some refrigerators roll easier than others, so a friend helping pull it out and push it back in really might help. Start with doing the backside first and use the air compressor to blow dust out the front. Then do the front after taking off the cover. You have to be pretty strong to muscle the fridge. The extra brushes and vacuum attachment are worth their weight in gold. One of the brushes can also be used to clean out your dryers lint trap. It's a real hassle, but worth it when done at least once a year. If you move into a house with an existing fridge, the first thing to do is pull out the fridge to look at it and start the cleaning.

Thanks for covering older and newer models. I was thinking just slide it over to the back door and blast it with the leaf blower or air compressor. The cardboard trick looks helpful too since my fridge is right across from the dishwasher
HAVE USED LEAF BLOWER. WIFE WAS PISSED, BUT WAS NICE AND CLEAN. THEN CAME THE CLEANUP OF KITCHEN 😂

I recently noticed that my ice cream was much softer than usual and checked the fridge temp to find that it was much higher than usual and wouldn't get any colder. I was worried I'd have to get a repair or buy a new fridge but decided to clean the coils to see if that would help. They hadn't been cleaned since the fridge was bought 27 years ago. Works like new now. 🙂

I have an Amana top freezer/refrigerator. the coils are in the front in a cage so that a thin brush cannot be used. Vacuuming removes dust from the front; I don't have an air compressor. So I used an electric leaf blower on the lowest setting. It worked extremely well, but was messy. I had to vacuum and dust the kitchen afterwards..gave it a good cleaning. This would not be as bad if you clean it every 3 months. One could tarp the counters, table, & sink when doing this. The refrigerator runs less often now and is noticeably quieter.

What a hard job I had cleaning my fridge! I actually made some 'homemade' similar tools (yes, I watch CZcams how to videos AFTER, duh)! I think the fridge needs to be designed better to keep it clean!

The fridge in my garage was SO nasty when I cleaned it for this video. Gotta make sure I get that job done every 6 months, since that fridge lives in an environment with LOTS of dust. Have you ever had to clean something that was that bad?

Another great video. I just did this with my fridge recently and used similar methods. I didn't know about the specialty brushes though and I just used a combination of vacuum tool, hand brush, and even an old paint brush to get the dust in the harder to reach areas.

A few bits of advice I would add...
1. Don't muscle your brushes or vacuum attachments around the refrigerant lines or between the condenser coils because if you crush them, pierce them, or compromise a braze connection you will be looking at a repair so costly that you may have to consider buying a new fridge.
2. Be gentle pulling the fridge out... Loose water line connections can disconnect and copper lines can crimp quite easily if you horse a fridge around with too much force. Know where your water shutoff valves are before you move your fridge.
3. There is a tray at the bottom of the refrigerator that holds water from the defrost cycle until it naturally evaporates. If you use compressed air to clean the coils be mindful of that fact or you may blast water out of that tray and all over your floor. This is another reason why you want to be gentle pulling the fridge out - a sudden jerk of the fridge could also spill water from that tray.
Note: As long as you have no ice on the floor of your freezer (or water dripping into the fridge if your freezer is on top) and your refrigerator is operating at the correct temperatures _(about 0º F for the freezer and 35 - 40º F for the fridge)_ don't be concerned if you find no water in the defrost tray.

Thanks, for the video of the possible cause of my non-cooling fridge. It might just be a money saver as technicians are hard to find and with expensive charges. For a while, I thought I need Freon like in a car or the AC. All I need now , muscles and vacuum cleaner.

Wow you are a very very great teacher I appreciate all of this important little details like like maintaining your screws I just found you but I am definitely excited about seeing all of your content because you are very detail-oriented person and I appreciate that for someone who is a single mom taking care of my mom there's no guys around to help us with any of this stuff so I sincerely appreciate you doing it from a very detailed position teaching us the very important things that you would assume that other people know this is exactly why I hate the phrase common sense because what might be common sense to someone who has done that before might not be common sense to a CNA like I am and what might be common sense for me in nursing you might not even think of so I appreciate your videos so much being so detailed one thing I was wondering is what should the inside of the refrigerator and freezer temperature be and how long after cleaning the coils should I expect to take to regulate the temperature another question is do you have any idea what the fridge should actually be set on for Energy Efficiency? My mom's bills Energy bill seems to be really high and I'm trying to do everything I can to to bring that down for her

As for temperature settings etc: Inside your fridge is a smaller version of the same sort of system that keeps your house cool in the summer. Much like a house air conditioner, there is a compressor inside the fridge that is involved in the actual cooling portion of what it does.The compressor cycles on and off periodically to maintain a specific temperature as set by a thermostat (or whatever "coldness level" or similar controls are available inside the fridge). A fridge should be able to maintain between 35-40ºF. Anything above 40ºF is not considered safe for food storage, as some microbes and bacterias can grow just above 40ºF. Also, getting much colder than 35ºF and you'll risk some things starting to freeze.
If the coils are dirty, the most common effect is that the fridge compressor (the most energy-hungry component in it) needs to run for longer periods at a time, because the heat exchanger (i.e., the coils, where all the lint/dust builds up) is much less efficient. In extreme cases of dust / lint build up, even with the compressor running all the time the fridge cannot maintain the proper temperature.
So - long story short: If you have no idea when the coils were last cleaned, it's time to do it. Clean coils will help a fridge run as efficiently as possible, and use as little power as possible. You can pick up a cheap fridge thermometer on Amazon (amzn.to/3ExDN68) to verify the temperatures the fridge is achieving. It can take up to 24-48 hours for a fridge to really adjust it's internal temps after a good coil cleaning.... so don't expect the internal temp to drop noticeably in the first 5 mins (or even 5 hours) after cleaning. Leave it at least overnight with the door closed before re-checking the temperature, and place the thermometer somewhere on a middle shelf.

I wheel my frig. to an outside facing door after removing the panels and blast the dust out with my leaf blower. Not only is the debris gone within a minute, but it's also immensely satisfying!

if you're in an area that can tolerate dust, use the exhaust on your shop vac or a leaf blower at the end. It will liberate a lot of dust! For some shop vacuums, the exhaust is barely or not at all filtered, so in that case clean out the shop vac and filter before blowing around in the house.
Great video! Few months ago, I noticed my older fridge was making a whining noise so I opened up the back panel for the first time in years. So dirty! I knew to clean the front coils but had no idea about the back. No more whining lol

you could also use a small air compressor to blow off dust on the coils-messy,but effective
I would add that checking the fan motor and lubricating the bearings while cleaning the coils.
