    In American English we use nearsightedness vs farsightedness, although those words are not used often either. As to the degrees, most people don’t know and don’t care. We say,“ I can’t see without my glasses/contacts“ , “I’m legally blind “ “ my eyes are really bad”. If you’re older and have farsightedness, most of the time we say, “oh, I wear bifocals without lines”. “ I have to wear reading glasses “. If you want to know whether people have nearsightedness or farsightedness, you would say, “ do you wear glasses or contacts “.

    生活化用語,度數的確會用power/degree來表達,只有極少數的人會知道dioptre這個度數單位。舉例近視/遠視400度,普遍都說-4或+4,你說-4.0/+4.0dioptre,估計對方會愣好久😂.
    簡單易懂就是 myopia近視nearsighted,
    Hyperopia遠視farsighted,presbyopia老花Old eye, Astigmatism散光glare

    • @AnthonyFokTungLing
      @AnthonyFokTungLing Před rokem +20

      近視/遠視用 power 還可以,但在英國和北美,degree 一詞只適用於 Axis 軸位,即散光的方向 (0° 至 180° 之間)。去配眼鏡,驗光師跟你說的就是 dioptre 或 diopter。
      用 Google 搜索一下英國和北美講解如何看懂眼鏡處方 how to read glasses prescription 的網站就知道了。
      不過確實,說 -4 或 +4 (不加單位) 也是可以的,在超市賣的 reading glass 老花鏡上一般就一個數字 (如 +2.50),不寫 dioptre 單位,因為不是自己親自去過驗光,不一定學會 dioptre 這個詞。

      Her videos are very helpful, but agree with you that a lot of these are not how people actually speak in real life. It kinda also depends on where you are, and who you are talking to. Diopters is not really used in many parts of the world, including where I came from :) in Singapore, we don’t use any of these. Same for “My Company”. Usually in many parts of the world people use the phrase “my company” loosely. Generally people don’t use “employed by” in conversational English :) understanding cultural differences, conversational vs written English are all equally important. 例如, 你冇可能同人講 “Will you be coming to the office which I am working at?”. Instead, you’ll say “Will you be coming to my office?” 因為咁樣自然啲. 加油啊, Melody! TLDR, same for “send you home”.

For myopia, you would typically say "near sighted". I would understand "short sighted" if you were talking about eye sight but the term alone typically means "lack of foresight". Great video, Melody. Please keep these great videos coming. Totally amused by those real-life mini-dialogues throughout this 14mins production. Well done! Bravo👍🏻👍🏻
    The viewers of this video seem pretty enthusiastic leaving their comments below. Inspired by their interesting input, I’d like to share mine too (based on my observation and dialogues with native English speakers over three decades) 😂
    1. Melody is correct that laymen (working in non-medical/ non-ophthalmological/ non-optometric fields ) would apply terms like “myopia”, “hyperopia”, “presbyopia” in ordinary everyday conversation - unless you may be engaging in a dialogue with an ophthalmologist, optician, or medical professionals.
    2. When describing and discussing deep about the vision issue with non-medical related individuals, “shortsightedness” and “nearsightedness” can be used interchangeably to describe myopia actually experienced. For presbyopia, can just describe as “age-related longsightedness/ age-related farsightedness”.
    3. To describe our vision in absolute details (i.e. the digits and mention of diopters - to be honest, laymen almost never ask), my own and the native English speakers’ responses are only describing as “plus 4.5”, “minus 2.5” - as astigmatism is of low mention among laymen friends. If desperate to talk about astigmatism, I would use “blurred vision”.
    3. Other than “see you home”, maybe can say “Your place is round the block. We’ll drop you off.”
    Thank you 💗

    是否可用 I'll drive you home or I'll walk you home?

    • @lampaabb8645
      @lampaabb8645 Před rokem +3

      其實最常見的對話是先問對方的目的地,are you heading/going home? 再說I can give you a ride. give you a ride home 這個用法沒錯,但是現實對話中對方已經說了要回家,那你沒必要重複home。對方還沒說要去哪,你就直接要送人家回家也太怪了吧⋯drive you home類似,是可以的,在你不需要詢問對方也知道他要回家的話,比如你的伴侶或者孩子,這個很自然。否則人家沒說要去哪,上來就送人回家,有點嚇人⋯至於walk you home 沒有語法錯誤,但表達的意思更像是我護送妳回家,對方不熟悉路,或者需要保護,這樣用還可以,但就是妳和同事一起順路散步回去,walk together或者就walk就可以了⋯
