Hannah Barnes is joined by Rachel Cunliffe and Freddie Hayward to discuss why the Tory betting scandal has rocked the party, and why Rishi Sunak cannot pull up in the polls no matter what he does.

Today I saw for the first time a election tactical voting placard in a garden, in a current Tory-held seat. It said something like - I'm a Labour supporter but I'm lending my vote to the Lib-Dems. Not of any surprise really. To be so bad at electioneering and to have so many gaffes, mishaps and scandals in such a short space of time, it surely must have been planned and the Campaign Director was so enthusiastic, he decided to set an example himself. The trouble is, the brief he received on the goals of the campaign had erroneously had 'lose the election' instead of 'win the election' written on it. Being a numbskull Tory, he took what was written as gospel and planned accordingly. Thus far, his plan is a roaring success!

This reflects a dark part of the British economy, namely the part played by gambling in the so-called leisure industry.
With all of us carrying mobile phones with applets for all manner of useful things, gambling is now considered part of the fabric of British society. The lottery and a myriad of gambling companies vie to squeeze, what amounts to a heavy rate of tax, mostly from people who can ill afford it.
Denise Coates earns a £250k+ salary plus a £250k+ bonus on the back of people gambling. She has earned billions from what many would consider a vice.
It is therefore ironic that the government of the day that presides over this for the sake of taxation, who know its impact on the poorest in society, should ultimately be struck down by its own members trying to make a few ‘easy’ quids.

i'm not convinced this has any political traction. The element of surprise at corruption is simply absent.

Can’t lead to disaster as they are already in the middle of one. Whatever is beyond disaster is now where Sunak and the Party of sleaze are at.

I would not agree with the later comment that the UK has avoided the lurch to the right, possibly thanks to brexit. Quite the opposite, the UK already had their lurch to the right exactly around the time of the brexit referendum and has moved ever further right since then. If anything, the rest of Europe is simply playing catch-up. The move now back toward the centre in the UK is a good lesson for those in Europe that only failure waits in the direction they are heading. Let's hope they also realise that quickly and revert back to the centre ground before it is too late.

'Small number' compared with what? Sure, a much larger one! But as the number should not exceed zero, any is too many. 'He is dead, but only slightly', is not a convincing defense against murder.
