- Express style iron sights are a common feature on any large caliber safari rifle. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for installing an island style rear sight, along with a banded front sight. Using solder, a drill, and some elbow grease, this process is straight forward and relatively simple to perform.

I've been a student of gunsmithing for 2 years, going to a professional program. Soldering is one of those things I know I need to master, but I do it so rarely, that I forget all about it and have to teach myself every time.
I'm not a gun smith per say but I build a lot of flintlocks so soldering is about all I know how to do decent. Ha.
I'm here trying to decide what's the best course of action to put open sights on the Weatherby Vanguard sporter in 350 legend I bought for my kids to hunt with.
It warms my heart everytime I see a new video from the master Larry. Thanks to you I have way more than what they thought me in marksmanship class!
I feel like that African safari music follows Larry around wherever he goes.
Spit Flush are you familiar with Willy Wonka and the oompa loomas?
Similar story. He picked up few tribe members on a safari. Now they live with him and follow him around playing that song. They are paid in cornbread and freedom seeds.
😂😂😂😂😂
Thats why his wife lost her mind. She just couldn't take it any more. Laying in bed at night hearing jungle music while she's trying to sleep and he's over in the corner making a video of how to properly mount a scope on a howitzer or some such thing.
Be greatful that he didnt pick "Macarena" as his background music..
LOL!
Using flux WITHOUT a capacitor?
Truly, you are a mad lad.
Need to generate 1.21 jigawatts ⚡️
This video is one of the only good ones for learning how to solder on these sights, used it years ago to teach myself the technique and have done this to every rifle i own without factory irons without a problem. Good video for sure
Larry Potterfield haunts my dreams.
I would like you to show us how you clean the barrel after the job is done. Thank you!
+Yuriy M Steel wool and you are done
@@jeronimomurruni ...you would think one would clean up the barrel before installing the front sight. Regardless it would be nice to see that in the video so we don’t need to scour the comment section for a method let alone having to watch a second video to explain it.
Larry said "It looks nearly perfect" when it was still dirty so I think he was done. 4:14. Good enough for Africa.
Larry sure enjoy your videos thanks and keep them coming there a pleasure to watch
Larry, thanks. I was just able to cut down, re-crown and then re-install my front sight on a Ruger Super Blackhawk. The darn near 8 inch barrel was a might unwieldy and was on crooked from the factory. I now have bear and cougar defense that is easy to carry.
I love these gun smithing videos. I could watch them all day.
Sir Karim finished my point of view simple artist wonderful to be more than a weapons engineer greetings to you from Iraq and I am very impressed by your abilities and abilities again
Dam Larry, you make it look so easy.
Love the video’s. Love the store.
Thank you uncle Larry.
Larry is skilled and has all the best gunsmithing tools. I suck and have very few gunsmithing tools. It’s scope only for me.
Great video Larry, going to use the tinning method you show here to re-attach the front sight on a Ruger Super Blackhawk after I cut back and re-crown the barrel.
My God, Only if every man had these tools! And a Larry Potterfield!!!
It always looks so easy when he does it
Excellent
Great work
Surprising simple.
There's a lot more to that than meets the eye, I think.
Only Larry can afford tools like this, that 797B-12/300 Starrett caliper alone is about $500 OTD
great video nice tips
Note* You will need a $10,000 milling machine to install this sight.
+762ALEKTO 13407047949 search for retailers, seeking contact. China
+762ALEKTO I would imagine that if you had a good, properly set up drill press you could do this same thing. also a $300.00 used mini, Metal lathe off eBay would get the job done as well. I use mine for all sorts of precision turning. you would just need to find the correct cutter / reamer. the one he's using looks too long to use on a mini lathe.
+762ALEKTO or a $20 file and some blue die. you dont need a milling machine, most gunsmith work is done with files and hand fitting.
+762ALEKTO go watch the barrel band video. he does the same process with a vice and a hand reamer

The information is priceless. The music is too loud.

I agree with other's. I think you should have included the cleaning process at the end. It is a shame for things like modern PCP air rifles how few come with a fixed/iron sight! truely a shame!
Uncle your smile is very cute. You must be really very good human being.
I really need some express sights and quick release set-up on my .300win mag. Maybe cut the barrel to 20-22" too
Приятно смотреть ваше видео
Yo this song is lit!
Nearly perfect
how do you file the rear sight??? on another video he uses pencil lead to stop the solder leakage (barrel band swivel)... i like that better than the bluing....
how you clean the barrel after the job is done?
with elbow grease
Hi Larry will it be better using Silver Solder or Flux Core or Lead free .
larry do you have a video on how to choose proper sights? i have a 1977 marlin #60 thats missing the front sight, dont want a factory replacement because the blade is not adjustable or removable and the sight ramp that is, wont work unless i want to tap and drill(no biggie if i had a drill press but i dont) so just wondering. if not i know it would be a longer video but would be worth it i think.
Would the tinning process work with an aluminum sight ramp?
What kind of temps are you looking at to melt that solder (I assume around 700ish degrees?) and would those temps mess up the heat treating on a shotgun barrel, if those have any?
Don't worry about the specific temperature. Just use enough heat to barely melt the solder and get it flowing.
I’m no big game hunter but having a need to switch to iron sights seems like much more of an emergency than he made it sound lol
Dangerous game rifles are often used up close and in brushy conditions, the scope being removed often with QD mounts. Lions don't sit still enough for scope to work well.
Good video I have a Japanese 7.7 that is missing the front sight would one of those sights work thank you
The cooling down of torch is that not making front end barrel shrinken and chocking sir ?
Is there part 2 for finishing by shin polishing and removing the heat marks.
I would also like to know how to clean the dark after ?
thanks
Its done with sandpaper
@@eliasknapp5391 it's weird that no one's answered his question for 5 years ..you have done it finally ..I wonder if he's still alive ! or if he still cares how to do it ..
@@amerfable probably not, but this must have been said haha.
So now that your done and barrel looks like crap how do you clean??!!??
I have a 308 I need open sites on it I can't use a scope how my left eye is but always Ben deadly with open sites thanks for your video I was little worried it couldn't be done that ezy
I wish my savage 300 had these

How to clean that dark marks left by ??
Is this the same method used to add a front ghost ring sight to a shotgun?
I am needing to remove a soldered sight from a barrel, any suggestions on how to get it off?
I assume heat it until the solder melts. I would verify with a professional though.
Is it plumbing iles solder that you use? If not what do I look for?
force 44 from brownells
He really Flux with these sights.
Hi any ideas? Want to put silenser on my 1982 cal.308 sako rifle but dont want iron sight off.
So may we drop in and use your lathe? Haha!
did you drill through the barrel or just far enough in to attach the set screw? if so, how do you know how far in to drill?
+hdrjunkie My guess is if you take the barrel's outside diameter, subtract the bullet diameter, and divide that by 2, this will give you the barrel wall thickness. He didn't say, but because of the shallow hole and the care he seemed to be taking, he used a bottoming tap.
+maynardr6 good tip... thanks!
put the screw in the site before attaching to the gun. measure the protrusion of the threads and add about .010 for drill depth
make sure the screw is not too long
How is the cold blue removed?
I am not fully knowledgeable in metal working, but wouldn't heating a small portion of the barrel with a torch warp it somewhat? not to the point of unsafe firing, but i would think that it would be a small bit more inaccurate. Please correct me if i'm wrong, i know this isn't welding temps, just soldering, but I am a little hesitant to heat my barrel in only one small section, either for one of the sights, or for the barrel mounted band swivel in another video.
Heat can affect the barrel, but it's more likely to affect the heat treatment than warp it at these temperatures. The barrel is very thick and can take a decent amount of heat before it becomes an issue, but you definitely want to be conscious of the heat and maybe use some heat paste to stop it from spreading if it makes you feel better. Use just the very tip of the flame (not the feather or cone where it's much hotter). Definitely avoid something like tig welding which would encourage a lot of heat.
Thanks!
That is a great process and for sure i would have to have a gunsmith do the work to ensure i get it right. Plus i dont own any milling machines lol I was hoping to find some kind of iron sights for a few bolt action rifles i own that all ,came with a scope. I have never used a scope and i'm barely hitting the steel! LOL Im learning as i go? But with the different rifles, came different scopes so they all work just a bit differently....in any case is there is easier at home process or kit that can be purchased to do it my self? I can put a barrle or entire rifle in a vice and fasten sights to it. I just cant mill anything like you can. hehe I feel i should 1st shoot t he rifles with irons before even trying a scope. Then purchase the proper scope for said rifles that i can run properly as I will use the same scope on all the rifles and dial them in as i learn to do so? lol another great video sir! I just hope as old as i am now i get the chance to do all of it? lol
I am by no means an expert but it might be more cost effective to buy an accurate quality pellet rifle or a .22lr rifle with iron sights to train with.
You figure you can do that for about $120
Will the blueing not stain the finish
You don't also have to tin the barrel?
This certainly seems like a cleaner way to do it. No excess solder all over the barrel that needs removed.
What are the metal bonding agents?
How can I get my 30-06 barrel done so that I can turn it sideways and shoot up close, or straight down at a deer, need help
My guess is that is the next video ;)
Totally off topic but I bought a Remington model 11 it has a huge Choke looking thing on it and help on what's it purpose
Hi,.
You may already have your answer, but that is a muzzle brake.
It's on there to help tame recoil.
probably a cutts compensator
I need to resolder a sight on an already blued bbl. Will this effect tempering and existing blue?
Not tempering but bluing, absolutely.
You can't solder to bluing, or did you NOT listen to the video at all? Such stupid questions, it is hard to believe there are so many low IQ people out there.
@@scotty362100 well sir, I can tell you that I just soldered quite a bit of old dirty stainless steel to copper tubing. I can even tell you why you couldn't solder to gun bluing. I'm sure, no, I'm positive I'm light years ahead of you on the subject. Blowhard! Bluing would act as a contaminant. Just like welding aluminum, your metals must be completely contaminant free. Now good day to you!
@@samking73 And just like the video, you didn't pay any attention to my comment! Thank you for proving my comment 100% right though. idiot P.S. I solder and weld for a LIVING every single day professionally. moron
@@scotty362100 I'm pretty sure their is someone with a sub-par IQ in the room but alas, it is not i.
So how do you clean up the look after doing that? the barrel looks like shit so how do you make it nice again?
thats my question!
slim salha The barrel is in "white", which means that it is unfinished. He will have to send it somewhere to have it blued.
okay thanks.
*****
Larry can both sandblast and do several bluing techniques.
***** He does all bluing his self. Although that gun has a silver barrel when finished. Some 000 steel wool will take it right off in about 10 seconds.
What solder is that?
มาวัดแบบนานแล้ว
Can you tell me what kind of welding this is?
Silver soldering
Thanks for the video.
You don’t need the background music 🎼.

please does anyone know the name of this music?
Now if you could send me a video on how to cut, re-crown, and add iron sights to a 1944 Lee Enfield 303 British. PLEASE! Want to make mine a scout style rifle would this be more expensive than buying a factory scout?
It's obvious that he is using tin solder and not silver solder which makes me wonder how he is going to blue the barrel as the caustic salt bluing bath will dissolve the solder. Perhaps slow rust bluing?
Sta-brite soft solder has silver in it, which will hold up to caustic solutions.
Will it damage the blueing on the barrel
You always have to re-blue after solder work.
Did you NOT even watch/listen to the video?? SMFH

Doesn't heating the barrel mess with the steel?
+Chris Moore no
+Chris Moore nope, the torch wouldnt be hot enough
+Taylor Phillips 13407047949 search for retailers, seeking contact. China
+Taylor Phillips what is the solder he is using?
It should be silver solder which technically is a brazing product as it operates above 700F. But the experience of using it is like soldering, So I guess that is the term that gets used. It is wicked strong. But at 700 degrees is it hot enough to draw the temper of hardened steel. However all you need to do is affect the very surface of the material. And given that they draw the temper of rifle barrels a lot anyway, they may be tempered at 700F anyway. The key is to keep the heat hot enough to very rapidly heat the surfaces so the least of the barrel is affected and to get the heat in both parts but use the sight base as a heat sink.
Clean it up with steel wool or the same sand paper he used to prep the surface.

How much would it cost if i take my rifle to a gun smith to put on iron sights
I wanna know too.
couple hundred bucks and at least a year wait. typical gunsmith
anyone know what solder he is using for this?
He's using silver soldering
+Taylor Phillips thanks
How much would this affect the accuracy?
+Black Paisley none
BeardedBüchsenmacher I mean at long range...is the barrel still free floated?
It could affect the barrel harmonics however most probably not. a free floating barrel has nothing to do with what is attached to it it is to do with the area in the barrel channel area of the stock the stock should'nt touch the barrel, that is what a free floating barrel is.
BeardedBüchsenmacher Ah ok, thank you.
+BeardedBüchsenmacher really, does a free floating barrel do anything if at all, for accuracy? I mean, by how much?
Why a rem 700?
Hello friend, why does not videos have no translation?
Seems pretty simple but I still ain't doin it lol.
Did you use silver solder or regular solder?
silver
Sta-brite low temp silver solder 32,000 psi tensile strength.

Они что ствол тоже самодельный ставят?
Where would i purchase these? Any links?
did he even align it up with the front sight?
+Judge Dredd he leveled them in the video... if you mean side to side the rear sight is drift adjustable because its a dovetail. you dont "align" sights in the shop. you do it at the range
no i ment if the front dove tail was off and not centered on the barrel
the front post centered on the ramp, which is centered on the collar which was leveled on the barrel. the front isnt a side to side dovetail. its a slot that is aligned with the axis of the barrel which is the purpose of having it mounted on the collar
he centered the barrel first, then centers each sight so they will be straight basically, since the barrel never leaves the clamp he just has to keep each sight level also
Mom!! Wheres the blow torch?!
