I think it's a reference, not to just Pacific Rim, but the first Kaiju ever, and a beast that's actually real, and it originated from Norse mythology, the Kraken. I say real because it was probably nothing more than a group of colossal squid that mistook ships for whales that were missing tails and swimming backwards, so they grouped together to attack them, hence why stories probably say that it had more than two massive tentacles and it sank ships, the primary tentacles of the colossal squids wrapped around the deck while their bodies were underneath, and out of sight, giving the impression of as single massive beast, born to sink ships and kill anything that sails or swims.

No they aren't. All Pacific Rim monsters are Kaiju, but not all Kaiju are Pacific Rim monsters. That's like saying Pacific Rim and Godzilla take place in the same canon because they both have giant monsters that come from the sea.
