  • Jonny Wilkinson full showing in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final. So much riding on one man and he delivered when it counted most, sending the winning drop goal over in extra time for England.

Wilkinson had so much more than modern 10s like Carter. His tackling and game management were on a different level.

All these people in the comments putting it down but they forget how much pressure was leading into this game for Johnny. He was virtually carrying that team and was expected to perform every game even though he was only 24. Add on the fact that everyone in the bloody world wanted to see him and that team lose and so would raise their game when playing against them. Compare that you carter in 2015, he’d just come of the back of one of the most successful careers in sporting history and was full of confidence, was playing against a mediocre Australian team with no real world class players bar maybe hooper and pockock. He was also playing with arguably the best rugby team of all time and the whole world was backing them and was supporting them to win that final. Johnny takes it for me.

I'm English and Jonny was great in this final, Dan Carter was great in the 2015 rugby world cup final and also against the British & Irish Lions in 2005. However i can imagine that the greatest games played by a fly half were probably a long time before all of that when the game was amateur. People like Barry John and Phil Bennett come to mind for Wales and the Lions.

literally every time someone brings up the debate of whos the best ever, every single England fan brings up his defense. his defense was good his spot 1 on 1 tackling was really aggressive and accurate but guess what so was carters

@@lordJordNorg The English just assume without doing research that Carter couldn't possibly have been a good defender and certainly not as good as johnny. None of them realise he played his first 4 seasons of super rugby at 12 and his first 2 years playing for the All Blacks at 12. There are fuck all world class 10's that could defend at the 12 and as good at defence as he was, johnny wasn't one of them. Most of wikonson's defensive highlights are big shots with mediocre technique. whereas Cater was just technically solid and just didn't miss tackles.

Dylan Muir read the comment mate. The guy said ONE of the best defensive fly half’s ever been, which he was. Not once was carter slated so you don’t have to get all vexed he was just complimenting one of the greats of the game. I don’t think he even said he was English anyway so you don’t have to get all defensive.

Pretty special performance, have to agree with the thumbnail. DC was good in 2015 but he didn't defend (or wasn't required) to that level of intensity. The subtlety of Wilkinson's passing game shouldn't be underestimated, look how many of his passes allow the runner to hit the ball at speed. 15pts, a try assist, a game winning drop goal, away, in overtime, against the home team, in a World Cup final...sheeit = Johny F*&%ing Legend!

Carter is a wonderful player and probably the best 10 all round ever in most eyes (although I prefer Jonathan Davies). The difference between Carter and Wilkinson's RWC final status is that the NZ team won the RWC in 2011 without Carter and again with him in 2015, so he was a nice asset for them to have but proved not to be essential for RWC victory by that particular All Black team. In contrast Wilkinson was essential for England's 2003 RWC victory, not only in terms of points scored/created but also defensively, acting like an extra flanker on top of all his other duties. After 2003 he was never the same again due to injury but still somehow managed to drag a poor England team to another RWC final. On a situational note, it is also worth considering that England's 2003 RWC final victory was against the incumbent champions, Australia, in their home stadium, with some shocking homer refereeing. That's a whole extra level of mental pressure that Carter didn't have to cope with in 2015.

No matter how you slice it Carter had a better performance in the 2015 final than Jonnie in 2003 but that shouldn’t be surprising due to Carter been the best 10 to ever play the game and would take a once in a century kind of player to equal or surpass Carter

@@deishawnclarke308 This is not Pollard compared to the forwards, this is Pollard's performance as a fly half, compared to Wilkinson and Carter's performances in a similar stage of the same competition.
Having said that though, yes of course the SA forwards started the England demise, but I don't think Sinckler going off had that much to do with it. The best forward pack in the competition was in the Springbok starting lineup; the second best forward pack in the competition was on the Springbok bench. While Coles on for Sinckler that early may have weakened the England pack, there is no doubt in my mind that the utter domination would have happened anyway. England missed Sinckler more in open play than in the scrum.

Ok, name a better performance by a 10 in a Rugby World Cup final then? He scored 15 points and set up England's only try. Kicked the game-winning drop goal in extra time with the pressure on off his weak leg as well as the clutch penalty from about 45m in the first extra time half. Cleared England's lines all day and when targeted in defence came up big making 10/12 tackles. Just talking World Cup finals by a flyhalf, this is number one.
