I was an LAV AT commander who called in air on Iraqi targets. You should SEE what these beasts do! We did the BDA's ( Battle Damage Assessments) and it was not pleasant. It made me thankful I am an American cuz damn the damage from ONE A10 removed several BMP's and BTRs from existence.

What isn't to love about the A-10, its a plane built around a rotary machine gun that fires ammo larger than BEER BOTTLE!
And thats before you get into its incredibly high durability, ordinance loadout possiblities, and that legendary reputation for air to ground support & attack capacity!

I was a squid so my info is at best second hand. I was always told that the high brass have never like the warthog because they never particularly liked the ground support mission. The glamour is with the fighters and bombers. They were basically forced to adopt the A-10. They've been trying to kill it ever since. The latest effort was to try and replace it was by using a fighter in a secondary role. I think it was the F-35. My jarhead friends all insist that nothing does the job like the warthog, though. He said he would rather trust his men's lives to a warthog that had been shot up and spent too long on station than to an entire squadron of anything else.

Thank you for posting this story! My Dad worked on the original flight manual for the A-10 at Fairchild Republic on Long Island, NY. Previously, he served 21 years in the US Navy and US Coast Guard. That was his baby, well, that and his six children... He never saw her in real combat action, he passed 5 years before Desert Storm.

  • @lamarredwards6716

Yes, the Pentagon kids wanted new toys to replace the A-10, meaning it would have to be retired.
The American people and congress would have none of it.
Used for what it was designed, close, in your face, support for ground troops, it is the best.
Because it isn;t a "multi role" platform, i,e, launching long range missiles, spying at 90,000 feet, etc.,etc. the brass frowned upon it.
However, based on the backlash re retirement, it is being made even more lethal. The grunts on the ground who have had their asses saved by it, applaud the move.

As multi-purpose as the F-35 is, sometimes you want to keep something like the A-10 around, something that can get down and dirty, be easily maintained, etc.

  • @marktisdale7935

The problem with the A-10 is that all of the airframe are past their lifetime hours rating. Remember that the newest airframe came off the assembly line 40 years ago. We have done things to prolong their life, but without new airframe their continued uses is on borrowed time. I would love to new airframe start rolling off the assembly line, but I don't see that happening.

    • @marktisdale7935
      @marktisdale7935 Před 5 měsíci +2

@briangoldy8784 Yes, the B-52's are older, but they were built to fly a lot more hours and do not have the stress put on their airframes that fighters or even the A-10 do. This is because they get up to altitude and cruise around. Nobody is yanking the yoke around to pull G's. It is just the difference in the way they are flown that explains why they can last so much longer.

I was at FOB Airborne, Wardak Province, Afghanistan in 2008/09. During the 2008 summer fighting season we were being regularly bombarded with 107mm rockets being fired at us from a mountainside across the valley (a straight line distance of about two kilometers). They were pounding the crap out of us. We called for air support and first a 2-plane flight of Belgian F-16s attacked the hillside with the bad guys to no effect. Next, a 2-plane flight of Eurofighters (Typhoons?) attacked, also to no effect. Then, a (one) A-10 attacked the mountainside with a 2000 pound bomb and scored a direct hit on the rocket site. No casualties for us that day. The bad guys were fricassee.

I saw a news article a year ago when the air force said they would upgrade the A10 and not retire the plane. They call it wing replacement or wing upgrade. The upgrade to the newer style of rail and more of them. The computer and communications upgrade as well. The communication upgrades will allow it to seemingly link all the military assets. One of the military contractors explained what that meant was that after the A10 shot everything it could call for and then controlled other weapons on other planes close by. A hand over takes place and the links planes guide the weapons to targets. The other planes sees what the A10 sees. The A10 can also have an overwatch UAV assigned to it. The new UAV with A.I. can dogfight not just fling in a loop or just be refueling station for the A10.

The Air force has been trying to get rid of the A10 since the end of the Cold war. I was in from 80-88 and was exposed to it several times. During a live fire at Ft.Irwin,CA where it basically disintegrated the top of a mountain with the GAU8 and a couple of missiles. While stationed in Germany I watched its maneuverability as it banked and snaked its way through mountain valleys. Made this border rat secure in knowing that it would hopefully avenge our certain quick deaths had the Soviets ever decided to launch on our forward border camp.

I remember reading that a survey of Iraqi soldiers after Desert Storm named the A-10 as the most feared piece of US military equipment. One participant was quoted as saying, "It would come up, kill a few tanks, get hit a couple of times and keep killing until it ran out of ammo." While stationed in German, I once saw one flying low over the Autobahn. It was so maneuverable that it actually followed an off ramp at tree top level. I hope they stay in service.

Ryan, you were attempting to date the A-10 to Afghanistan. You're young! I remember flying out of Philadelphia in the mid 70s and counted more than a dozen on loading docks for shipping? I can't imagine where they were going since Vietnam had just ended. Some friends in the aerospace business came to work for the major subcontractor I worked for years later. Fairchild closed its plant in Hagerstown, MD following completion of the A-10.
It's a magnificent achievement in aviation history.

Most of that video talks about the gun that aside from various mods that were tested and removed hasn't really changed since the first hawg rolled out.
The A-X prototypes first flew with 20mm systems.
The newer upgraded C models have dual digital multifunctional displays for use with Nav systems, stores, targeting and so on.
The ARG-20 APKWS is basically a 70mm hydra rocket with a laser guidance system, a hawg can carry 3 x 7 round pods giving it 21 of these per compatible hardpoint, some hardpoints can only accept one pod if I remember right.
Don't forget mavericks, lgbs and jdams. The thing is just a low flying F YOU!

I hope the US Air Force is taking into account into the current Ukraine and Russia war as far as current combat conditions to figure out doctrine on how to keep it relevant as a fighting and weapons platform.

Hey Ryan…where abouts did you vacation in the U.S.? If you are in California, SoCal specific, I would have loved to take you and the family out lunch or dinner.

Hey man, not the states unfortunately bro, Mauritius to be precise. I’m due to visit the states this year though. It will most certainly be California too!

The US Army and the US Marines have both told the US Air Force they want the A-10s if the USAF abandons them.

I could go on and on about this tank killer. As a Scout from 1979-1999 we use to call in TAC air as one of our many jobs. We had a saying " if you can hear it, you get to live". I've done many live fire exercises with it (million dollar minutes) in Grafenwoehr Germany and Fort Irwin California. I was a bridesmaid but never a bride (not a combat Vet) and wished I could have seen it in action. Do you know anything about the Scout Sniper course that was taught by the SAS (i think) in Germany in the 1990's? I was a training aid (target) for one training cycle. Wished I would have known about it earlier in my career.

Retired Air Force here. Imagine if a group of 6 of these attacked a position. They wouldn't stand a chance. I remember when these came out and nobody thought they were any good until the A-10 had a chance to prove what it could do. It will never be a sexy fighter jet, but it has more than earned its place in the sky.

I saw in another video the A-10 program has been extended until 2035. Not bad for a plane that is almost as old as me.

50 year service for a plane design is unheard of and only now with the sheer amount of Manpads and autonomous munitions in battle the A10 may be relegated to a morale roll like the Dreadnaught battle ships of old.

Growing up near Dover Air Force base in the 80's these things always flew over my house. It was very frequently. We would be out playing in a field when we saw them coming in so low. We would wave at the pilots and they almost always gave us wing bows to say hi. Since I kid I have thought these planes were so bad ass and I sure miss them flying over the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
