With Tears of the Kingdom on the horizon, I figured it would be appropriate to take a moment to appreciate the origins and history of the first 3d Zelda game, The Ocarina of Time.

As I think about it, when you mentioned the combat system and how it was done... monsters waiting their turn to attack has gone to the wayside by this point. Now, _all_ the monsters will take the opportunity to attack you at once. And coming out on top despite the fact, makes the victory all the more sweeter. If you're good enough, that is.
what a fucking masterpiece dudeeeee
banger video
You could say it was a well timed release...
@@exxor9108 good video when is Dark legacy coming out?
Madseason. I miss you but every time one of these drop it takes me back to a time when life was easier. I hope you’re doing well brother. Thanks for everything you do.
I am quite busy these days, but recently have found more time for videos - should see an increase in frequency in the near future. I've missed the days where I posted more than once every 3 months D:
"takes me back to a time when life was easier"....I feel you my dude. Ironically, a time when I was younger, poorer, and unhappier day to day...but the mists of memory are what feed nostalgia. My father once said the blessing of memory is that it blurs out all the bad & highlights the good.
@@madseasonshow I didn't realize how much I missed you until I started reading this comment in my head...in YOUR soothing beautifully calming voice. Glad to see you're doing well buddy.
Calm down bro
@@madseasonshow any plans on doing hardcore and doing content around it?
Damn, Mad. I know this video won't receive as many views as your WoW pandora's box video, but you have really created something very special here. The love shows, this game was so formative for those of us who now dwell in the grey realms of the mid 30s, but so much of my heart still lives in hyrule, and this video touched me. Uou've really hit your stride not just as a video editor but as a historian, and a writer too. I was one of your very early subscribers all the way back in the old days, when the number was in the triple digits, you've sure come a long way, and every time you put something out, you will always have my full attention. Thanks for a great hour, man.
Rather early 30s, I’m mid 30s and I always felt OoT was more of a phenomenon of people a bit younger than me.
Totally agree with this, video has me in tears by the end. Loved it.
Your Pandora videos are great and I appreciate everything that you're making man
I appreciate you watching them!

A double dose of nostalgia. Ocarina of Time and Madseasonshow ❤️
This is storytelling. Nostalgia is just a tiny aspect of it.
Yeah. Nostalgia for 2019 lol
Man I was about to sleep til I saw this
I miss MSS’ constant video output… no matter how many videos he pumped out they were always high quality and highly entertaining.
Feels like Classic killed his channel.
and WWII :3
As a young boy playing this game, I remember it as the first time I aspired to be a hero. I'm an adult now, and it's crazy to think how formative a video game was on me.
Same here dude. I grew up thinking that one say I'd go on some sort of journey to learn to use a sword and then become some great hero.
lol
@UncleNoob great name.
Alot of media pumprd that into us. Some good and bad comes from it, but I wouldn't have it amy other way. Media is a good way to pass ideals and morals to the next generation.
Did you end up becoming a hero? Have you performed selfless deeds for the good of others, be they man or beast?
I should hope so. That would be nice.
Madseason back with the fire visuals
I remember playing on my brother's save file when I was 6 years old, walking out of the church as adult Link. One of those undead jumped on my head and I got so scared I immediately flipped the power switch off.

Getting this + a n64 + a green controller and to top it off a green inflatable chair for the Christmas that it came out was still to this day one my fondest memories as a child :')
The Jungle green N64 that came with dk64. Legendary.
That's the equivalent of ascending as a kid. Congrats 👌👌
Anyone else would love to see some audiobooks narrated by MadSeason? Whenever I'm having anxiety or a hard day and need to wind down, watching and listening to your videos always helps me feel better and take me back to simpler days.
I've actually looked into this but it's kind of tough. From what I understand you can't just narrate whatever you want due to copyright issues - publishers have to listen to a demo and approach you directly. I'm comfortable with my voice, but it's kind of niche I think and usually it takes a bit for people to warm up to the monotoneness. I'd love to do stuff like asoiaf or maybe even some of the WoW books if given the opportunity though.
@MadSeasonShow I would love to hear asoiaf or even dunk and egg books in your style. thank you for all you do man, this zelda video is incredible and I can't wait to watch it again lol. pandoras box is such a great series. hope youre doing well.
I would certanily. Maybe LOTR or something similar 😁
I would love this too
Madseason! Have been into creative writing for 20 years now, world building, and finally ramping up to publish my first Novel. You’ll be my first choice/offer to narrate for the audiobook version ☺️
This video is simply a masterpiece. I couldn't stop watching and got all teared up at the end. Please don't stop making them. Your video's brighten up my day. Thank you for creating this.
Man, the production quality, editing, and storytelling are excellent. It's crazy to think this kind of quality is out there for free - it really shows you've found what you were meant to be doing and it's great to follow along.
When I saw this, I thought, "what hasn't been said about this game? How many documentaries on it do we need??" But MadSeason showed us that we can certainly do with another. Awesome content, thank you so much for this.
Madseason was bound to release this video 😁
Long one ahead. My apologies in advance.
This series will always have a place in my heart. The very first Zelda game I ever played was A Link to the Past. I remember it was a day when my mom took me to her workplace. I don't remember why, but I just didn't go to school that day. Anyways, mom was an assistant manager at a toy store called Mi Jugueteria (more or less the equivalent to a Toys R Us to folks in the US). I must have been 7 or 8. A co-worker of hers said "hey maybe he'd like to play Zelda?" There was an office lounge area with an SNES set up. As I recall, there were 3 games which were readily available to play: Street Fighter 2, Star Fox, and ALTTP.
Prior to playing Zelda, I had literally only ever played Mario on the NES and uh... Duck Hunt? lol. The concept of *exploration* was completely foreign to me as far as video games were concerned. I was hooked. I remember actually having a bit of trouble escaping the castle at the start of the game but when I found that secret entrance in the throne room... Mannn that made my day haha. Over the course of months, I would sometimes go with mom to the store and of course, play the game. I would make a bit of progress every time but I never actually beat the game. Not at that place anyways. I think I must've gotten as far as the second dungeon. That said, the game embedded itself in my memory.
You can imagine how blown my mind was when I first saw Ocarina of Time at a friend's house. This had actually been the first time I'd seen a 3D video game, too, if I recall correctly. Later that year, I got an N64 for Christmas. As I recall, I never actually owned a OoT N64 cart. Didn't have too many N64 games, come to think of it... but my family oftentimes rented movies from Blockbuster, and I'd toss in a game or two every time we did. I remember it took me... quite a while to get through OoT this way, as I had to keep returning the game, and sometimes when we rented it again, it was a different cartridge with a new file or whatever... I did eventually wise up to it and started marking the Blockbuster boxes so I could tell which box held the cartridge with my save file on it. This worked... most of the time.
This comment is already long enough, but videos like these really awaken that nostalgia. I still play Zelda games nowadays. Can't say I've played them all, and well... personally speaking, I'm not that huge a fan of Breath of the Wild. The openness of the world was amazing, but I found the story and characters to be kinda lacking, to say nothing of the dungeons. I've never considered Zelda stories to be the best or anything, nor its gameplay, but the games have always had a "tight" formulaic approach to them that never felt tired to me. The games just have a charm to them. Always felt like coming home when playing them. BOTW did not elicit that feeling. I think... sandbox "do whatever" type of gameplay may really just not be up my alley, and I'm a bit saddened by it. It's kind of a bittersweet feeling, actually, because I look around and see the praise BOTW got, and I can't help but feel happy for those who enjoyed it as much as they did. This isn't at all to say that I didn't, no. I still enjoyed it, but the series seems to be heading in a direction that doesn't align with my tastes.
All this said, I will still play Tears of the Kingdom, as this is a series that, despite clearly going in a different direction, I still find *some* joy in playing..... I just really hope the game delivers on dungeons and characters lol (that last trailer did elicit some excitement in that regard).
Bro it’s just a game
@@omensoffate youre going through every comment and posting shit like this because youre uncomfortable with people being open about how they feel. its pathetic tbh. grow up, i hope youre very young because if not that's really embarassing.
@@omensoffate what’s your point
this was the first video game i ever owned. even though i didn't get all three stones as a kid, i played it for many hours. this game changed my life and made me the gamer and musician i am today.
The little madseason plush hiding under the covers watching the Samurai fight made me smile, that was so adorable.
Always a pleasure to see a new MadSeasonShow. The quality makes the wait worthwhile.
Glad they're hitting the mark. I was thinking of doing some less-produced stuff for a bit here though to try and improve on the quantity side of things 😎
@@madseasonshow I won’t complain about more content 👍🏻
This is truly a gift! I’ve watched all the really good long form OOT on CZcams lol and now one of the greatest long form creators on the platform as made one. This is amazing
You've really come into your own with these amazing productions Madseason. Very impressive work! A fresh and introspective retrospective.
I cried at the end, easily the most "gives me chills" video of the year
Same...... this game is extremely important to me and my transition from a child to an adult
Very well done. I didn't expect this documentary to be as thought provoking and emotional as it is. Literal tears in my eyes.
Bravo.
This is a godly made video that made me nostalgic, almost cry and feel proud. I grew up with Zelda and I always thought video game can make people better if they take the values of those heroes like link and try to be heroes in their life, we might think our world is a boring mess but we can make our own adventures everywhere. I totally reflect and respect everything you said in this video. Bravo mah man
On point
Legendary timeless game. This video summarized it well. It is my favorite game of all time because it is spiritual, mystery, drama, action, thriller, adventurous, etc in one. The story, cinematography, music, sounds, gameplay and being innovative for its time make it a one in a million game and the goat.
I was 10 when this game came out, and it was absolutely quintessential to my childhood. A masterpiece to me and thousands of other gamers.
I think it actually was bought for my brother, who was 17 and had no interest. I played it completely. I remember showing him one time, and he said "I've already played the other Zeldas" as if this one was somehow similar to its 2D predecessors.
I remember reading up on a rumor how you could actually get the Triforce through some special means; which wasn't true. And I remember the first time I defeated Ganondorf and then his Gannon form.
I certainly was in love with the idea of being that hero that people loved.
And I've replayed it several times since, thanks to emulators.
Not many people could turn a video about the simple and humble development of a video game from the 90's in to a brief, yet rich, world history. 10/10
Just as I was in the middle of a Zelda youtube binge, here comes my favorite youtuber with this.
i simply love the work you do madseason. thank you ❤
Thank you for watching it! I appreciate it
This wasn’t just an absolute banger of a detailed analysis in to a game shaped and changed a generation, but a commentary on the nature of life itself. Its a love letter to a time in many of our lives that we won't ever get back, and will never forget. I for one know that skipping school to pick up my pre-order at 8am when the shop opened, spending my £10 a week paper round savings on that golden cartridge, was a decision that I'd be a much worse person having not made.
After completing the forest/water temple I felt like a 2m tall Scandinavian Viking. Such joy and pride!
Strong work, one of my favorite creators covering my favorite game of all time. Thank you for the countless hours of hard work you’ve put in to give us all something truly special to enjoy!
I remember when I was a little kid and this game finally came out. I spent hours in Zora's Fountain. The music and the waterfall kingdom absolutely inspired 5 year old me. It's really incredible that Nintendo didn't just bottle lightning with this one, they bottled a planet... Or a fish.
...Took me way too long to figure out you had to bottle a fish for Jabu Jabu...
Fantastic video, fantastic subject matter. Ocarina of Time was the first video game I ever played, and it evoked in me for the first time an important feeling that I've only felt a precious few times since: a deep sense of gratitude that I got to exist in a time, place, and way that allowed me to experience it.
Absolutely Fanstastic Video! Your effort of editing this video and bringing it to us is shown 10 fold. Thank you for making this.
God damnit Mad season, I'm just trying to eat lunch at work and I'm here crying at my desk with that ending. LoZ Ocarina of Time was the first game I have a conscious memory of playing. I'll never forget it.
Masterclass video man, you've done it again.
MadSeason coming in clutch with the best videos every upload. Love it!
I remember playing this as a kid with my dad. Some of the best memories I have to this day, the music alone makes me nostalgic.
I love how he started making those long videos, not only about WoW. This type of content is my favourite. And of course it’s very good!
I love the new ideas you've been implementing into these videos, like the MadSeason Plushy making a presence here and there ^^
I don’t know why but your narration brings me peace. Thank you.
Such a phenomenal video. A master craft that transcended time for me and rekindled the feelings of being 7 years old, booting OOT up for the first time in the family living room. I have never before been made to feel such a visceral sense of nostalgia that this video essay has brought to me. Thank you for this and all your hard work.
2023 : the last 14 months were released great games like God of War Ragnarok, Star Wars Jedi survivor, Hogwarts legacy, Burning Shores, and of course, Elden Ring. They look and play different, but share the same DNA, the one that Ocarina of Time have created in 1998. How games would play today, if Ocarina of Time didn't exist ? That's how important, legendary and groundbreaking was this game. We should give this historical context to our Younger generation, because not all of them are aware of that
THE LEGEND IS BACK. I never played the game but you bet your ass I'm sitting down to watch this.
This was incredibly well put together, allot of comments on how good the game was but the production of your video is on par.
The water temple scene was brilliant. Another great video!
Man I forgot how much I love your voice and vibes. Thank you so much for being who you are, and I hope you're doing well.
Time to go binge your old content for a few hours!
Right 👌
Wow, this was a hell of a ride man!! I even started tearing up near the end! ❤
I was not expecting that either
I love the fact that your videos make me want to hop in a time machine and experience these awesome games (WoW in the old days and Zelda) once again. But in the absence of a time machine your videos makes us all feel warm and fuzzy thinking about what it was like to come home and spend hours exploring these magical worlds. Thank you MadSeason, you are the best.
Miss you man! What an amazing video, watched all your wow videos before and OOT has always been my number one favorite game, for more than just the amazing game itself, but the stage of my life, the experience of sharing the adventure with all my siblings, it’s something I could never recreate but 40yr old me can reminisce about whenever I want to feel good. Your video did this for me! Thank you!
The evolution from wow to pandoras box has been a fantastic transition.
This is by far the greatest game ever and of all time! I remember playing this so much on this little couch in my dad's office when I was a kid. I had to sleep in there, cus we were poor lol and games like this brought me much joy and frustration at times too xD
Every time a Pandora's Box comes out, I'm highly tempted to go back and watch the pre-release Classic WoW videos. A better time in life.
The king has returned! I love putting these videos on In the background at work! Keep up the excellent work!
what a banger. Love these docs, the context provided is so interesting. I feel like Ocarina is such a well known and popular game that it's easy to think you know all about it, but the contextualization in this documentary was incredible and really inspiring. Thank you for all your hard work.
Always brightens my day whenever you upload. Been watching for a long time, glad I stumbled across your videos way back when. I’ve never played WoW but your stuff draws me like nothing else. Been loving the new content topics recently! ❤
I played a link to the last every winter when it first snows. I remember when I was 10 playing in 1999, it was a snowstorm and I wasn’t sure if I had school the next day or not. So I played LTTP all night while the blizzard raged, and woke up to 4ft of snow. My cousin and I played in the snow and then came in and beat the dark world. One of my favorite memories ever. Your videos are a little taste of that, and it takes a special touch to induce such feelings. Thank you!
of all of the obligatory OoT:Retro's that there are, this seems to be one of the most reverant and polished. I appreciate this video.
Damn you madseason, you succeeded in bringing tears to my eyes. It may seem silly getting emotional about the history of games but you deliver it in such a fantastic way.
This was a fantastic experience to view and thank you, keep it up!
The timeline, hidden messages and philosophy this game holds is unique, thank you for this amazing video.
Since I don't really know what to say for this Video leaving me speechless and full of joyful memories of my childhood, I did want to support you with a like and a comment. I'm glad you did this video. OoT was something special and will always have a special place in my hearth.

Thank you for creating these masterpieces for us Madseason. Hope life treats you good
I'm a 90's kid (1991), but I never played the Zelda games. At this point I'm saving the series for a special time to dive into them because even though I never played them, they still have that 90's era aesthetic/ feeling to them. And that alone gives me a huge amount of nostalgia by proxy.
Oh i missed that voice. What a nostalgia trip ... This video is a masterpiece, thank you so much.
Oh boy if Madsseason gets into long form gaming retrospective… holy…. Never knows best will have a serious contender for best voice for when trying to chill and potentially fall asleep too
Finally some good frigging news. Madseason drops, so pumped for tears of the kingdom. Like a giddy little school girl.

Wow, I watched 2 days your videos and thought “WOW, he haven’t uploaded anything for a long time”

What can i say this is the childhood game that started gaming as a whole for me. It brought upon the use of environment based level design that captured achievements for me. I love the open world and the use of forest themes, water themed etc. I have a full sleeve tattoo dedicated to OoT because it reminded me of the simplicity in gaming and as me as a gamer where it all started. Completed the game 8 times over 4 times full 100% clears and i still love the replay value. My OG game
Ocarina was an incredibly large game for it's time. Fitting it on a cartridge was definitely impressive though. Used to get bored of games very quickly as a child which is why I appreciated the instant loading of cartridges. You could flip between games and not bother putting the cart back in the box.

What a fantastic video MSS, I am thrilled to be following your post-WoW content
I was in 4th grade when this came out and my mom surprised my brother and I and picked up the game and came and got us out of school early. I had no idea and the way she revealed it was pressing it on the window of the classroom when she came and got me I’ll forever remember it. My brother must have made a big deal of it for her to get it cause I had no idea what I was in store for, still the most powerful game memory that I have

These really are some of more beautifully made videos on gaming that CZcams has to offer. Incredibly well done, MadSeason.
All the Pandora's Box videos have been great, but I think you really nailed the scripting for this one in particular - you definitely stuck the landing with the closing statements.
Great writing and great work - keep it up!
Honestly bro so very glad you are still producing content. all your videos always soothe the soul and scratch my nostalgia itch.
Big applause to you. Bringing all the information together is a Challenge in its own, but your way of storytelling is bringing it to new hights. Very much a masterpiece, just like Ocarina of Time itself. Thank you very much great Wandering Warrior of Azeroth and Hyrule.
