A Female Friendly Prison? Inside The Grand Valley Institution

- This documentary takes us inside the walls of Grand Valley Institution-one of five federal prisons for women in Canada. Here, most residents live in small shared houses, in an environment that is supposed to be female-friendly. The film features three unforgettable women over age 50 doing time in a system that can seem designed to frustrate and baffle. Vietnamese Kim struggles with translation and awaits a parole board hearing that seems to never come, while Pearl relies on her faith in God to stay positive throughout the hard reality of prison life. Finally, T.A.'s larger-than-life outlook serves her well, whether she's fighting for greater access and rights for prisoners or composing and performing her own country-tinged musical compositions. While the film doesn't idealize these flawed characters, it also advances the notion that those who have committed crimes deserve to be treated with dignity.

Not in England we don't as our gov don't give a ff. All they care about is lining their pockets no matter what the cost of living does to those in difficult situation. Yes I admit there has benn some help with the cost of living crisis but that makes a flaming change for them tbh but there will still be those in povery that will still be struggling.

But it’s wayyyy softer time doing it in Canada 🇨🇦 then in American 🇺🇸 prisons !!! The American 🇺🇸 pens are double the size !! Double the inmates per prison !!

(I'm a girl, just for clarity..not that it matters I guess lol) but a place that hasn't been mentioned...and that i have always been just shocked by(haven't seen a whole lot on the women's but quite a lot on the men's prisons there) is the unreal lax/easygoing conditions in Britain! U should watch a few shows about being locked up at places in England and Wales. They got it easy compared to the states too, big time

Yes yes I’ve seen Britain 🇬🇧 prison it’s like Canada 🇨🇦 as well very LAX!! 😃. I’ve seen 3 rd world 🌎 countries and their prisons system. OMG ITS HORRIBLE 🖤🥲 like Russia 🇷🇺, Philippines 🇵🇭 Thailand , 🇹🇭 , even India 🇮🇳 . Are horrible places !!! Omg overcrowded is a understatement!!! 😳😳 they use a bucket for their washrooms 🥺😳🤢🤒☠️ and some countries if you don’t have families go feed you !! U will starve !!! That's some high-end living for prison. This is the type of thing you imagine for the ultra rich/famous that end up in "prison" for long periods, living in something like this instead of regular old US prison. US is nice compared to most of the world, this is like luxury compared to the US. It's like the further north you get the nicer the prisons 😂

Man I could do time in a prison like this !!! Not in Texas I’ve done time & women’s prisons can’t touch this one. Ours is rat holes to say the least. The only key we have is for our lock. Dang these are nice, home away from home, plants & all. Wow. Not anywhere in USA.

"U can see we don't have free control of our knives" biotch. Are u for real. The fact u have KNIVES is insane. Knives qmd a full kitchen with a stove & mocrowave. What in the eff?!? In the US, people are doing years for using drugs, and luxury for them is making a meal cooked by mixing ground up chips with hot water & sprinkling crushed cheetos & ramen seasoning on top. This lady is living the high life & STILL complaining. Unbelievable!!!
All people know that crime occurs which does have to be dealt with, but the prison systems need to ALSO follow a structure that is not just providing a cot and 3 meals daily - whatever brought these ladies in regarding their own substance abuse or physical abuses they have suffered, need to be completely addressed and after care is an absolute. It appears there is an almost shadow figure that can simply, "SAY," for example as in Pearl's case, that she tried to escape which was horrible. Then afterwards, that same unknown figure says, she DIDN'T try to escape - all is well. This sounds and appears like someone playing head games. Kim's council tried to explain what a bureaucrat was which is actually no answer at all - thus perpetuating further injustice. My heart belongs to each soul who's life took the turns that brought them here and also for the strength to follow positive plans for their future. God bless you all ladies and staff.
The similarities between this and the Ontario Long Term Care System is insanely crazy
Just because these ladies are in prison does not make them less of a human than your own mother,sister, aunt, daughter they still should be treated with dignity. Many people in this world forget these women made bad choices perhaps in the heat of a moment and some do regret it. But we can’t judge them because unless we are in their shoes it could be us or a female family member in the same situation. I think that they need training to re enter society and if they are not given ample support I think they see no other life or way and end up back at square one.
@@karmaqueen4762 thank you for you revengeful words I actually have been involved in with many of the ladies at GVI for four years so I got to know many of them and where and how they got there so unless you walk a mile or two in their shoes don’t play God.
@@karmaqueen4762 you have the right to be upset towards her however if you continue to hold angry and hate you only are hurting yourself do you think she is laying awake at night worrying about how you feel I doubt it. But my point is this you cannot judge every single person in there with the same attitude you are judging her with. Are you honestly going to judge someone who say got tricked into giving a little girl a doll unaware it contained drugs because they thought they were just doing a kind deed and they go to prison now for drug smuggling are you judging people who defended their self from abuse and in the heat of the moment killed someone after years and years of abuse are these girls to be judged the same way. Do your self a favour let go of the anger move forward and start a charity or do something to honour your aunt raise money for her favourite charity don’t let the person who took her life win.

@Donnell Okafor That's really messed up! There's no reason women should get breaks or opportunities like this but men shouldn't! They don't even have babies with them, so I don't understand the special situation for them. I must've missed the part where it explains why they're so special 🙄 The baby program is another one that's sexist anyway. Since they do it here, I can't imagine they don't have a similar program in Canada too (where women can raise their babies for a while), but I bet neither has a similar program for men!!!

Depends where you're doing your time. Higher you get more like U.s it gets. Only difference being population size which accounts for the violence difference. Believe me if you where doing time in Collins bay, stony Mountain, Edmonton Max ect. You wouldn't feel like it's a walk in the park

I just got out of GVI and it not the same anymore. There is no smoking, I guess I can thank T.A for that.. the staff were uniforms and vests now. There is not enough jobs and the ones they have are only given to pedos and baby killers. they have allowed men to do thier time in GVI . the place is run down and all those decorations and people have fish tanks in thier rooms are not allowed. We will get charged for hanging anything on our walls or doors. They keep building places that are supposed to be for inmates to work but the staff end up using them for staff. its not the same anymore. the majority of inmates now are under 30.
