  • The incredible and thrilling inside story about River Phoenix' sudden death and the following legal war and other intrigues considering ‘Dark Blood’ - one of the most extraordinary in filmmaking - will be told in the documentary 'Never Give Up', which sound designer and Sluizers collaborator Harold Jalving is about to release in the fall of 2016. Sluizer passed away in 2014 at the age of 82. His last wish was that the movie will be shown to the audience someday. Therefore, Jalving’s documentary has two missions: to tell the extraordinary story of 'Dark Blood' and get the film released as well.
PowerTaleTV brings you the best of film festivals, ultra-low budget indie movies, talented filmmakers, future projects, and great behind the scenes stories.

Correction to this trailer and all reactions.
The Utah shoot (dessert scene's) took 6 weeks in total.
River and George arrived one week previous to the shooting,
to get to know eachother better.
After the Utah shoot, the production moved back to L.A, for a final 8 days of interior studio shootings.
After the first day it was Holloween weekend.
River died in the night after the first day of L.A. studio shooting.
The last shot is in the film.

I donated to the cinecrowd funding back in late 2012 I guess. And I received the Dark Blood DVD in March/April 2013. I got the postcard inside, the DVD and also I received the 35mm film laments, I'm from Sydney, Australia and I donated $65 Australian dollars, which at the time, was something around $58 Euros. So yeah. I wished that they had a Special Features/Behind The Scenes, deleted scenes section on the DVD. I know some scenes that they did omitted from the film, that were actually shot in the Utah and New Mexico desert. As George Sluizer was doing a Q and A at one of the film festivals, and he talked about a scene he removed because it didn't fit the new edited version of the movie. It was a scene where Rivers character "Boy" and "Buffy" are both looking at the Stars through the scope, and Rivers Character Boy says this speech about the stars are of the dead or something like that. And another scene was that of the stories he shares about his great grandmother and grandfather. And the last scene River filmed, is not actually in the film. They filmed 2 scenes on that final day of shooting in LA, the last scene was when Boy and Buffy are in the cave and Harry has gone, and Boy talks about wanting to start a family etc, that's part of the missing scene that Harold Jalving ls also talking about. When they talk about the silloutte of River, that was after the scene was finished. But the footage of a few scenes are missing somewhere currently at the moment. Dark Blood consisted of roughly five weeks of on location shooting in Torrey, Utah and was scheduled to complete three weeks of filming interior scenes in Los Angeles, California on a sound stage. Parts of the film were also shot in Gallup, New Mexico.[2] There is a scene shot at Mesa Verde National Park in Montezuma County, Colorado. Filming was only 80% finished before Phoenix's death on October 31, 1993. Production halted while insurers and financiers tried to determine if the movie could be completed, but with important scenes still needing to be shot, the film was abandoned on November 18 of that same year.[3] For the 2012 release, roughly four to six missing scenes were replaced with Sluizer providing narration.
It was revealed in October 2011 that director George Sluizer had held onto the footage, fearing it would be destroyed, and that he had reedited the material and believed that with some adjustments a completed film could be released in 2012.[4] In 1999 the insurance company that owned the negatives wanted to stop paying storage costs, so they considered having the film destroyed. Sluizer entered the storage area that held the negative and removed it.[5] It was speculated that Sluizer would ask Phoenix's younger brother Joaquin Phoenix to dub River's voice. The Phoenix family made it clear that they would not participate in the project, saying in a statement, "In regard to releasing River's last film, Joaquin Phoenix and his family have not been in communication with the director nor will they participate in any way.

You don't understand how Hollywood works. whenever movies made the production company has to ensure the film in case the actor dies or doesn't finish the movie.that's why insurance companies won't cover actors with drug addictions like Robert Downey jr. Lindsay Lohan Brad renfro at the time that they had their problems. Because it's a high-risk it's like covering a person with car insurance who has multiple DUIs. River Phoenix like a lot of actors on drugs misrepresented himself as NOT having an addiction to the insurance company so they would ensure him otherwise he would have been able to make the film. City insurance company is suing him for the money that they had to pay out to the production company after he died because he lied to them about his addiction. Which technically is fraud. I would do the same thing.

If he'd been off his tits on heroin or whatever from day one, then obviously anyone would have taken exception to that, like when Corey Feldman was nearly sacked from The Lost Boys because he turned up to the set high on cannabis and other drugs. However, in an interview, George Sluizer singled out a particular day - the last day of shooting, in fact - when he was clearly on something, describing him as being unfocused, struggling to judge distances, also taking nearly an hour in the makeup chair when normally he would have taken just 20 minutes.
Some people try to defend Judy Davis by saying she was a "professional actress who had no time for dealing with a drug addict". I honestly think she pushed him into relapse with her relentless campaign of bullying against him. There's a difference between setting someone straight for unprofessional behaviour and being a bully - and it sounds to me like Davis was definitely a bully, and the least professional member of the cast because of that.
Conversely, Gus Van Sant gave him a right bollocking after a particular scene in My Own Private Idaho for an ill-judged comment he made to Keanu Reeves, but it seems he got over that all right. Here, Judy Davis just bullied him mercilessly right from the off. If they had cast a different actress - my choice would have been Alison Steadman - in this film instead of Davis, events would likely have unfolded very differently.
