Hi Karl: I just want to tell you that I am so impressed with your steering colum set-up and all of your fabrication and tool building skills. I see you as Canada's best young car builder and you have an incredable carreer head of you. Also your Utube skills and filming is outsanding. Dont slow down you are going to be seen as another Chip Foose, Bobby Walden and Gene Windfield. You have my support all the way.

Just a tip on two things! The hole saw, I just turn the drill bit around and just do the lock screw up on the twist. Saves the saw walking around on any sheet,
Second is if you buy a 180deg 2 1/4 mandrel stainless bend, cut it in half and then cut the flange off the block huggers weld the cut 2 1/4 on there you can extend the exhaust joint back out of the way of everything and gives a much cleaner look there

I love your idea about using a tube with a 1/4" hole as a guide for the hole saw, shame about using the wrong size. I've used a piece of plywood in the past to give me a center for the hole saw when enlarging the holes in the strut towers on our race MINI.

I think what impresses me most is that I believe I can do or get done a lot of the individual processes, but it is how you can picture the finished product, formulate a plan in a heartbeat, and execute. I know more thinking goes into it off camera, but it is your ability to streamline your work till it looks as easy as a mellow country song. Anyone who knows anything will tell you to do simple well, is probably the hardest as every imperfection will be exaggerated. You do it the best I've ever seen.

Hi Karl, I'm an electrician and drill a lot of holes in metal. From sheet metal to half inch wall thickness steel beams . We use good quality drill bits and holesaws then tap a lot of the holes. We use the Drill Doctor to sharpen the split point bits and that really helps. But the one thing that really helps most is to lubricate the bits . The product we use that really makes the biggest difference is Hougen Slick Stick. I don't get kickbacks or anything. This really works wonders. Having to resharpen the drill bit every hole or throw them out, the same with the taps was expensive and killed a lot of time. Give it a try. It was a God send for us.

For the column clamp: machine a block with the bottom being the OD curve of the clamp tube. Drill and tap for the bolt longways through the center. Center over where you will split the clamp and pipe. Braze block to clamp pipe. Machine slot through block and pipe. Drill out bolt shoulder side of block for socket head cap screw. This way, the clamp block can match the look of the dash. If you want to get super slick you could also fillet the block where it meets the tube so it flows into the clamp. Brazing should be plenty strong for this.
