- This is a 1971 Ferrari 512M that I shared with the Owner for the 2012 Le Mans Classic. It had rained and was just drying out so the track was slick in spots. Had a bit of traffic but still a great ride! You might hear it popped out of 3rd gear a few times and hard to get into 4th plus notice the yellow flag just before the Porsche curves.All in a long lap at LeMans!

I saw one of these works Ferrari 512M win the 1970 9 hour race at Kyalami. A beautiful car.

I love these long going gears, hand shifted, what a melody and what fun to drive and giving maximum of flow experience.
The sound reminds me so much of the classic film “The Rendezvous”. Magnificent car, driving and sound in both. Pure joy.

For the historic races, I wish the A.C.O. would just reopen the entire Mulsanne Straight. But I guess they're too scared someone (non-French) would break the high speed record of 1988 (when a specially prepared Peugeot set it). Oh, well.

Best audio I have heard to date! Even the movie industry can't get it this good. It really gets my blood moving in a very good way. I dream of driving a car like this through the orange and avocado groves of Southern California at about 2:30 in the morning. Based on these lovely sounds, I would be doing the farmers a favor and they would know it. Their counterparts would probably not be too happy about it. I've had complaints in the past riding through the canyons at about 2:30 in the morning at speed on a built, big-bore Ducati. Those who know, do not mind a bit.
Lovely sound and great driving. Light weight and good power will always be a solid recipe for speed.

Nice to see the driver actually push the engine on this classic. Took it easy on the brakes and several corners, which was obviously smart, but he let that engine rev. Awesome stuff!

Bob you still kick ass., you were a sick fast driver, I have seen him crush everyone at RiverSide in a SuperVee race on Can Am weekend plus Long Beach in a Altanic Race, both Series had a ton of talent, plus he won at Macau the only American ever.
I remember him well and I’m not even American.
Good driving in less than perfect conditions and a sticky shift. Well done to keep it on the island.
I saw these 512M live at Le Mans in 1971 (and 1972). Sadly, they were beaten by the Porsche 917 Long Tailed, which were aerodynamically faster at max speed. Good old days !.
Sorry Van Lennep & Marko were in a 917K - or kurtz meaning short, the long tails all went out mainly with gearbox problems if I remember correctly.
You are right, Brian, the 917K won in 1970 and 1971. I only meant that the max speed was reached by the 917LT in the Hunaudières straight.

Daniel, from France. Thank you for this fantastic video with display of speed. I've calculated some accelerations : 60 mph in 3 ,3 seconds, 100 mph in 6,4 seconds, 120 mph in 8,2 seconds, 150 mph in 12,6 seconds and 190 mph in 26,2 seconds. The standing start quarter mile is at 10,15 seconds (136 mph) and the standing start kilometer is at 18,7 seconds (172 mph).
Going past the other cars so quick hard to figure out what they were! Sounds great too. Looked (a bit) like a GT40, then an Iso Bizzarrini - then later some Shelby Mustangs - all much older cars. I guess only a 917 would've given it a good run. My dad had a P3 in early 70s, like sitting in a goldfish bowl for me as kid I remember. The P3 caught fire when I was there, and I scrambled to get a fire extinguisher off the wall to save it. Fun days in Sth Ken ;)
Your father had a Ferrari 330 P3? Was he related to Enzo or something? The real thing or a replica? Can imagine only a very wealthy car nut owning the legendary Ferrari that Ford went to great expense and trouble to beat at Le Mans 1966. The 330 P4 is even rarer, only 4 ever made (1 of them a controversial P3 conversion, owned by a US Hollywood movie mogul) and more prestigious after it’s epic run and global WSC battles in 1967, but the P3 is still something quite special too.
@@PulsonarHad forgotten writing comment, but yes it was a real P3. My dad and his then business partner shared a mews property that had been vacated by one of the great train robbers, and had become derelict. The partner was Chris Renwick and I think he bought the P3 in the US. Have been told it was ex Can Am and came w/ a transporter, but I'm not sure, and it's 50 yrs ago. There may be a record in a possible MotorSport ad, although they had a lot of great cars, and sold them on constantly. My dad (John Warth) supplied Robs Lamplough w/ the 250 GTO, sold cars to (JCB) Bamford, De Cadenet, and many in later yrs to Charles Howard... He died mid 80s of malaria smuggling a Fi/Fa Delahaye out of India. Gave me an eye opening childhood into some wild times, and great journeys that I'm thankful to look back on in my old age.
@@richwarth Blimey! sounds like you’ve had one hell of an incredibly exciting childhood, although not sure how even a maxed out Ferrari P3 conversion could’ve done against the Can-Am masters like McLaren M8, Porsche 917/30 derivative etc but your story is quite fascinating!! To be honest I have little idea about Ferraris involvement in Can-Am in the late 60s/ early 70s. I learned that they converted a couple of the outstanding P4s for CanAm racing instead when Enzo withdrew his cars from WSC after new rules made his precious P4s obsolete in the WSC after only 1 glorious year (1967-68) . But you mention your fathers business ties and the links to premises once managed by the infamous train robbers; (Ronnie Biggs, Buster Edwards, etc…, ) and the London criminal underworld shenanigans. Then the racing link to the well known De Cadenet family Got the makings of a best selling novel right there. Thanks for sharing 😂
@@Pulsonar Yes While I know the P3 type wasn't a barchetta, as definitely a closed car. Someone called to mention about de Cad, and as he was around at time and older than me, I asked what he remembered. He suggested about Can Am, altho I'm not sure and personally never saw the transporter... I tried writing of one of the adventures, an overland journey to India, 1970. I'm a terrible writer, sadly. Without the chicanes, the 512 could easily do 225mph or more.

Amazing. You mention that the track was still slick in areas (and some gear shift issues), but it seems like there was still a solid amount of pace left on table … while still doing quite a quick lap!

Just shows how far cars have come... In its day this Ferrari was one of, if not the most technologically advanced car ever.
Not just race car, literally the most advanced ever.
Now, 50 years later, it's slower than a GT3 car around Le Mans.
Like 30 seconds slower.
I'm not saying this is a slow car, obviously it's not. There was clearly a speed displayed in the video and it showed almost 200mph. That's a damn fast car.
Aerodynamics. And brakes. But mostly aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is simply a wonderful, magical effect and it's made cars much faster and much safer.

Wow! Ferrari 512M...at Le Mans...what’s not to like about that? What was it like to drive a Bob? I have heard the chassis was a bit twitchy with a short wheelbase. It looked okay to me, although the gearbox was obviously causing problems. Wonderful sound.

@@anthonyxuereb792 In the 1967 race, the Ferrari P4s and Ford GT 40 Mark IVs with top qualifying speeds of 145+ mph - 233 km/h, were sharing the race course with Alpine Renaults with qualifying speeds of 112 mph - 180 km/h.
In that same 1967 race, A.J. Foyt was a rookie driving the Ford GT 40 Mk IV, with around a dozen practice laps on the course prior to the race. In the early part of the race when Foyt took over the driving from co-driver Dan Gurney, Foyt said in a later interview that he followed Denny Hulme, driving another Ford Mk IV, to get familiar with the course for around four laps; then Foyt felt comfortable enough to pass Hulme and led the rest of the race.
Foyt also said in a later interview that in the early morning hours Gurney overslept and couldn't take over the driving duties; so Foyt had to drive two consecutive stints with the car; four hours!
*Truly a remarkable era of racing and drivers!*
I should have noted that the 60 mph - 120 km/h speed difference was along the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans.

No, that isn't accurate either. The WM88 did 405 km/h in 1988 and the Mercedes C9 did 400 km/h in 1989 (see above link).

The Porsche 917 did 240 mph on the straight, but that’s a different ball game.
The highest speed ever recorded by a 917 on the old Mulsanne was 362 km/h in 1971. That’s documented by the ACO.
I’ll let you do the conversion to freedom units.
