Winter Car Camping at Barnes Field

- This week I go for winter camping with a car at the winter area of Dolly Copp Campground, known as Barnes Field. I have some fun and practice much needed skills. It is different to read something in a book and actually practice doing it!

21:36 this is so crazy. I was your neighbor!! That’s our elaborate setup with the tarp. My girlfriend and I were the ones sitting out in the middle of the campground watching shooting stars when you walked by with the pulk and said you wanted to make sure we were two humans 😄 and yes, we were the ones with the fire in spot #2. I’ve seen several of your videos about winter camping, and so CZcams always recommends any new content that you upload. When I saw that the title of this one included Barnes Field, I was like “oh cool that’s my favorite place to camp!” And then while watching this video I realized that were we there on the same night!
Oh wow! That is so cool. You had a good setup and our cars looked similar. Yeah, that was funny when I came back in the dark and didn't remember the big dark lump in the center of the field! I was going through the list of things it might be... tent, bear, car...
@@RachelWhelton I’m curious, did you make your pulk or is that one that is made specifically for this? I have two homemade ones, and they have their limitations, but I have used them on flatter terrain and they work well. I’ve been winter camping now for about 6 seasons, and it’s just the best!
It is a pulk I got from REI on clearance for 34 bucks. Nothing extra except I tied on rope and carabiners. Just for the fun of trying it out. @@hispanofial7617
That looked like fun. Unfortunately, car camping is the only way I get to go camping as I have sleep apnea and have to use a CPAP machine. I use a rooftop tent over the bed of my truck. I'm a day-hiker only. For firewood, I found that bio bricks (normally used in your wood stove) are a good solution over logs. They are compact and easy to store inside a vehicle. You need some kindling to get them started, but they burn slower than logs. No worries about transporting across state lines either.
What a superb idea with the bio bricks! I'm glad you have found ways to enjoy wild adventure even with health concerns. I totally get that as I have a few little things myself which could easily be reasons not to do any of this stuff.

Thanks. It seems tempting to hike to the Imp Face. But I guess it only looks like a face from the ground. Might be funny if somebody rock climbed up the nose.
I used to winter camp but no more; don't mind the cold but the long nights stink as I go by myself and gets a bit boring for me.
DOnt forget you can use your ski poles and skis as deadmen to set up your tent if need more security or you lose a stake. Also start keeping track of your fuel usage when melting snow etc so you get a gauge of how much fuel to bring if you ever go for multiple days. As I recall I used to carry 10 ounces of white gas per day but I could be off.

Thanks! Yes, the food. I love that company - Backpacker's Pantry. But if you try new things you are eventually going to find one you dislike. I never finished that mashed potatoes concoction and brought it home to the trash can.

I’ve been following every one of your videos for awhile now ! Thank you so much for making these … I always find you entertaining . You give me the courage to be more adventurous by myself . I plan on doing some winter hiking as soon as I get back to NH ( currently vacationing in AZ and been doing desert hiking )… like a dope I left my hiking winter jacket behind in a hotel closet here , since you are the queen of jackets 😂 which one do you recommend for warmth ?!?! I like the one you have on too , it looks mighty warm !
Thanks! Down in the 800 category. This red one I got for only 48 bucks at Eddie Bauer on the clearance rack in Conway. It's OK but sort of lightly packed. My old LL Bean "big baffle" jacket is 850 down and really feels like wearing a sleeping bag - but that is what you want if it gets to single digits. My favorite base layer is the LLBean merino wool ultralight t-shirt. It's so perfect to hold natural heat near your core. Then on top I wear a mid-layer like a normal merino top or a light fleece such as Mountain Hardware Air Mesh fleece. Then the jacket. Jackets go on sale a lot but the good ones start off expensive.
As mentioned, I was going to view some more of your videos after commenting on the random dog video. I saw your thumbnail of light painting which caught my attention and was delighted that you are not only a serious backpacker, but also a talented photographer! That is my forte too! I have not backpacked overnight with my camera gear but do hike with my camera gear to do wildlife and/or landscape/waterfalls, long exposure photography and my love of photographing the Milky Way. I see you do too! The backpack load out is either for wildlife (Sony, with 200-600mm lens) or Landscapes (Nikon, with wide angle and medium telephoto) and can be incredible heavy as you well know. Have yet to get a pano of the Milky Way Arch as life gets in the way and it won't happen this March either. I also love teaching my photography friends waterfall/long exposure photography. I will soon watch your video on the Milky Way Arch pano! Love your videos, can't wait to see more of them!
Thanks. Good to have a photographer in the bunch. It's good to have goals, such as shooting a milky way arch pano. For me the current goal is to take more "scenes" where I am small and the landscape is large. Too often I do portrait shots or close ups of things and fail to capture the bigger picture. I too have a Sony telephoto but it only gets to go on certain trips due to the weight.
Great photography, music choices, videography, editing etc. That headlamp was amazing too!! Very strong light!!! How did you make that cool heart light??🙂
I got a cheap light stick from amazon that has color options. I set my camera in manual mode to leave the shutter open 5 seconds. Then I wave the stick in a shape.
Rachel thank you for the video and the tour. Question how was the road noise from Rt 16?
At Barnes Field site 11 I could hardly hear any road noise at all, barely the occasional semi truck. When I walked down to the big field at Dolly Copp, the road noise was very noticeable. Several cars came around the campground loop either to look around, use the bathroom, or throw something in the trash - but they did not camp. Site 11 has also the sound of the brook. And in this case the wind and a creaking tree.
Why not bring along something to create a “ pilot hole” to get you tent stakes in ? Got to love fresh ground coffee and using an aero press

OK well I'm not an expert but I think turkey tracks might be wider angled between the toes? And there were some ravens in the trees so I thought maybe they come look for leftovers after humans leave camp. I can't be sure. At least you didn't say Emu. ha ha...

Do you like that pulk sled? What kind is it? , also after you bury your deadman stakes, and an ice axe is handy for chopping snow to melt for water and to retrieve your frozen stakes😊 good lessons learned in a safe environment,watching out for widow maker trees if its windy, and bring extra guy lines next time!
This pulk sled was 34 bucks from REI with free shipping so I cannot complain. It's sturdy and slides freely along the icy road. It has holes for customizing and weighs about what you would expect. I see it in many Scandinavian videos too. It might not be top of the line but it was so cheap and it will be fun to use. @@Karenwhitepaints
Great and enjoyable video, as usual. Do you think bears are active in the area now? Personal question... When do you typically poop in the morning? After packing up but before cooking? Right after eating? Do you leave your food unattended while you do that?
Oh dear! What a question. Bears - yes they are figuring out whether to hibernate or not. The daylight hours are short but the temperatures have been up and down. Poop - depends on hydration levels and caffeine choices. Food should never be left unattended and especially the stove so I consider the entire food and cooking routine as a strict procedure without interruptions (like the tent blowing away).
@@RachelWhelton didn't mean to be intrusive but when I watch hiker videos, some of them briefly mention they did their business before or after packing up their tent, etc. It's something we all need to handle successfully on the trail lol. Your videos are excellent and show us places you visit but I realize they are not intended as advice or instructional videos.
Thanks for posting this. I'm a local to north country but was always wondering where the 2nd place besides Hancock that stays plowed during the winter (which I'll be at the weekend of Feb 17th). What is your opinion on Hancock? Thx and be well
Hancock is great. I have not been there personally in the winter but it looks good. In the summer, that river is a dream for swimming! Whenever I drive by in the winter I look that way and it always seems plowed out with a camper or two. Hope it goes well for you!
