    Thanks for the great video. I'm considering a half-bike because my back doesn't like biking in a seated position, but if feel fine better when I take my butt off the seat. How does riding the half-bike feel on the back?

    I just bought the h3 last week , i will receive it tomorrow Monday . I spent almost 20000 Mexican pesos for this new bike experience . It is very expensive for me but i decided to risk my money for more fun in my life. I hope it is worth it .
    Right ?

    Matthew what a truly excellent video. I am contemplating a purchase. Ive never ridden a half bike before but I am drawn to it as a great alternative to road riding which I do a couple of times a week. I live in flat Cambridgeshire so the Netherlands flat option sounds good. Is your recommendation to stump up the cash for a HalfBike 3 or would you suggest I pick up a half bike 2 on ebay for £200-£250 and upgrade to a 3 if I get plenty of use out of the 2 ? Your opinion would be appreciated. Thanks for the video again.

      I first discovered the Halfbike through the Kickstarter campaign for the Halfbike 3. At that time, I was a bit unsure (as you seem to be) about how much I would like it and how much I would use it. Because the Halfbike 3 was several months away, I decided to start with a Halfbike 2 from eBay first - I got it for about $300. Not only did I like it, but my kids did too. I ended up buying 3 Halfbike 2s from eBay and then also backed the Halfbike 3 and got one of those! I still like riding both, but I would probably recommend trying the Halfbike 2 route first.

    I'd like to have longer handle bars.i also find it's harder going up hills.

    Terrific video! I've been considering a Halfbike for a few weeks, and this nearly seals the deal for me. My only concern only concern is that I live in a very hilly area of central California. Any concerns about riding up/down hills, particularly on roads with bike lanes? Thanks!

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 3 lety +2

      I personally find the Halfbike more difficult on hills than a regular bike. You might expect that since you are standing up anyway, you would be in a perfect position to handle hills, but something is different about the mechanics. Bear in mind that I do have the smallest cog on the front wheel, so my gearing is the worst for hills.

    • @darinladd5312
      @darinladd5312 Před 3 lety +3

      I do not recommend the halfbike for hills more than a hundred yards. Maybe if you could gear down instead of up. But on flat ground it performs well. Think full-body workout (you have to engage your abs to counter the pedaling...this does not come through on the videos)

      @@matthewberry3522 @Darin Ladd Thank you. I ultimately purchased a Street Stider, but your point is spot on. I was surprised at just how tasking it is to go uphill. It is *significantly* more difficult than being riding a bike. I believe that it's even more difficult than running.

    I'm interested in buying a Halfbike 3. How long do you believe the drum brake will last?
    Are the drum brake pads replaceable?
    That's my main concern is the drum brake wearing out and then I'll have no brakes. Thanks!

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 3 lety

      It’s my understanding that the drum brake pads have a very long life, but if you are concerned about it I would recommend checking with halfbikes.com. They are very helpful.

    • @darinladd5312
      @darinladd5312 Před 3 lety

      I hardly ever use the brakes. You’re not going as fast as a bike, and can fairly easily dismount into a run. I have the one with rear brakes; they’ve pretty worthless. Still, fun ride.

    Matthew, I am very interested on the half bike. How does it feel for exercise?

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 2 lety +2

      It is good for exercise because you are standing up and there is no impact on joints. I know that some people ride the Halfbike over long distances, but I tend to use different bikes for that. I really use my Halfbike for fun and because the riding experience is so different from anything else.

    Can you explain more about the gearing option you mentioned? Thanks.

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 5 lety +3

      When I filled out my survey from the Kickstarter, there were three options depending on the terrain you typically ride on i.e. Hilly, Slightly Hilly or Netherlands Flat. These basically correspond to the size/number of teeth on the front wheel sprocket. The Hilly option has 17 teeth, the Slightly Hilly has 15 teeth and the Netherlands Flat option has 14 teeth.

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 4 lety +2

      When you order a halfbike they make you supply measurements (not just your height) so they can supply the right size for you. My kids have no problems riding them - in fact they are better than me!

    • @darinladd5312
      @darinladd5312 Před 3 lety

      Not recommended. COG is too high and CM too far forward. You can lean back, but it compromises steering. Practice a lot on flat ground first!

    Hi Matthew how tiring is the halfbike and how fast does it go once your mastered it?

    • @matthewberry3522
      @matthewberry3522  Před 4 lety +2

      I found that when I started riding it I would get tired quickly - part of that was due to my fitness (or lack thereof) and part was due to being very tense because I didn't want to fall off! Once you get the hang of it things become easier - my max distance is around 20mi at about 12 mph.

    • @darinladd5312
      @darinladd5312 Před 3 lety +1

      It’s a full-body workout because of countersteering against the motion of pedaling. If you don’t countersteer then it will become dynamically-unstable. Full-body workout. But fun!
