As a studio musician myself, I did the whole pedal board thing for a while but for me it made no sense to have all my pedals on the floor. Having to always be bent over tweaking them was killing my back, so I built myself a pedal trolley from an Ikea storage trolley thing, and bolted a big piece of wood to the top. Now I have a nice clear space for lots of pedals at once on the board that's really easy to swap pedals in and out, I have my power supply underneath the board with holes drilled into the top for cables so everything is nice and neat, and I have space in the compartments beneath to keep all the pedals I'm not currently using. And it has wheels so I can move it wherever I need to! :P Best thing I've ever built
The cable management alone on that board, makes me want to throw my pedalboard on a bonfire.
Okay, I take that back. I love my pedals like they were my own little battery-powered children.
I finished building my own pedal board over the last year. I followed along with a lot of Mason's content and I built all my own cables, managed everything, planned the signal chain, and purchased everything myself. It felt amazing, and he has been nothing short of a wonderful educator with his fine content! :)
Heck yea! Thanks JP! Glad you found it helpful!
Relatable. That’s why I haven’t done a big semi perm board. Always tearing it up for new toys.
Ah yes, Rhett’s ‘edge of breakup’ full crunch tone.
Big respect to people that can manage huge pedalboards on stage, I know damn well I would probably just use my amp for my tone if I ever start gigging.
Too much disposable money Normal people would have to sell the other stuff All very expensive gear Must be nice No hater tho just saying
@Ian some pedals are kinda necessary though. delay, reverb, fuzz and a boost or overdrive as well as a modulation pedal (univibe, phaser, flanger, chorus, tremelo, etc.) you don’t need all those modulation but generally you need at least 1 drive 1 verb 1 fuzz 1 delay and 1 modulation pedal. Not trying to tell you playing with just and amp is bad or impossible, just that a gigging musician needs quick access to a number of sounds and pedals are the best way to do it (generally speaking)
@@Otis-Isom And if you're not showing up to a gig with a tuner of some description, I don't care how good your band is, no-one wants to hear the tuning song.
@@ZachShannon1 yeah, my tuner pedal broke recently and its been rough. Im trying to get another one really soon before my next gig. But I must say good rock n’ roll is just a hair our of tune.
@@Otis-Isom I use the Digitech Hardwire tuner, I forget the full name of it, but I picked it up cheap on Amazon years back, it's been rock solid for a few hundred shows since I got it. Everything else I've tried in the past ended up breaking down in some way, so it might be worth a look?
You cracked the code! So glad to finally see a pedal board video for us studio musicians, rather than traveling ones. Excellent approach to enabling quick swaps!
He has not said an option after the Pedalboard for AMPs to DAW (home Studio). That would be the next good discussion
The HX is the center of my main board too, the i/o works really nicely with pedals. I go fuzz>boost>overdrive/preamp>HX>4cm through one loop> Flint in second loop, along with a noise gate>
One day I will build one like that... Killer! ✌🏻
One day too😭👌🏼🔥
With what pedals Matt? Whole chain of tubescreamers😂
@@ebathurst9216 don’t forget the vintage wah pedals lad, seriously though Matthew your tone is insane
@@roanclawson4087 yep maybe a fuzz too
@@ebathurst9216 ya'll ever hear of keep it simple. Seems like Rhett is doing that now
I think this will be a series, "Building My Dream Pedalboard" we always want more, nice video!
It's called, " the pedal show " .
Secret to getting good: play with just a line 6 spider and no pedals for 20 years.
i'm a proud line 6 spider II 30 watt amp owner... i just wished the reverb was a separate control, but it was an earlier amp so the reverb was set with the delay and you can only use one... but that's my favorite thing about line 6, clean channel with chorus+delay (or reverb) and i'm good... the only channels i use were clean and insane, just with any line 6 products e'quing is non existent on that one LOL, but that's all the gear i have right now, ibanez grg270dx , line 6 spider 30 watt and a line 6 pod hd500x
Nice explanation of the reasons for, and demo of, the new board. Thanks Rhett.
Excellent video! My grandma wears the same ring you’re rocking in this video.
Old school and DIRTY TONES! Me liky! Great Board, your rig always inspires!
This is exactly why I use an HX Effects as the core of my board. Such a versatile and powerful unit. I also have a Preamp MKII on the way. With those two pedals, you can replicate almost any sound pretty well...
Rhett... I don't need to tell you this, but I will anyway. #1... you're a killer guitar player. #2... you're extremely talented when it comes to expertly explaining your gear, and #3... amazing videographer. Your production value is really second to none. I'm not even a full blown guitar player (simply acoustic campfire stuff), I'm a drummer. However... I still subscribe to you and watch everything you put out. Keep up the great work, brother.
JAM Ripply Falls, Harmonius Monk, Rattler, all wickedly beautiful pedals. The Delay Llama series are all exceptional.
Love their uni-Vibe as well.
What an awesome pedalboard. I am in the process of assembling my own pedalboard, albeit a much more simpler one. I always learn something from your work, thank you! I always learn something from your work, thank you!
Some recognition for the HX Effects! Best multi fx unit I’ve ever used sitting on a smallish board. Really a huge arsenal of usable fx that sound great. Great midi functionality too.
Dude, your pedalboard videos are always appointment viewing! Fingers crossed for some Backstage Journal sooner than later.
1:23 I'm mad about that kind of tones, you nailed it
Holy crap man. Awesome. So happy for you!
Very nice board Rhett, well done! I especially love that killer fuzz tone. Very gnarly!
In the process of building a DIY pedalboard, with a similar layout (and an extended section to the right for my massive volume pedal). For the top level, I'm going to use either some door hinges or a gas hinge, and some butterfly latches on the left and right sides to keep it closed. I love the idea of having a patch bay - I might need to add something similar to mine!
I was inspired by the patch bay, too. I'll be copying that idea! Thanks Rhett! 👌
Both of these guys inspired me to do a major pedalboard build this year. Went with a Boss midi switcher foundation, but purposely made the top (dirt) row much more accessible so I could tinker a bit and tailor sounds for a project. That Chase Bliss might put an end to that, though. What else could you need to fill in gaps? That thing is really impressive.
Heck yea!!!
Awesome video your breakdown and explanation is very helpful for all of us always looking for the best tones
I luv your Novo’s.
Some of the best guitars I’ve ever played!
Nice pedal board too Rhett! 🔥
Best! ✌🏼
Love the HX effects at the hub of your board! Same as mine.. brilliant unit!
Wow! Very practical yet highly versatile. I’ll take 2, please!
Rhett - Youre the man. Great player with a great ear for tone.
the little bits of playing inbetween explanations is great it keeps me interested
Sick, man. Some seriously amazing stuff there.
I was following vertex Instagram posts just waiting for this video. Great job guys
Wow. Nice build! It’s crazy similar to my board. We have many of the same pedals, and I also used expression out on a tape echo (EchoFix EFX2). I used a Waggi 28 board- close to your Vertex in design. Great vid, as usual 👍😎
The board is great the passion is priceless 💪
Nicely done, that is one sick setup!
Do you think Rhett just starting making videos so he can write off gear on his taxes?
I would
Why? He lives with his parents, no?
Why not, if you make a living making music then no problem :)
@@davidjonpeckinpaugh9295 I dont think so
@@davidjonpeckinpaugh9295 I dont think so
I built my first board in1986 that went into my rack system with twenty foot patch cords going back and forth into Hiwatt amps until I couldn't think anymore. Good thing my tech had a good memory. I love the ease of Rhett's system.
Simple and effective. Love it!
Ohhhh congratsss Rhett!!!
That's a truly great reverb sound!
Don't stop dreaming or building pedalboards. We can have one or two a week and that suits me just fine. I am not a publisher nor do i play to an audience anymore, but i still need to change a pedal out every two weeks for some reason. I guess because i can and it is an active hobby. One needs to get to the pedals without tearing an entire board apart. I use some wood i bought and made one. It holds 10 pedal's, and the only direction i seem to dream is more.
Nice, just added the HX Effects to my board as well. Using the ES-5 to send midi patch changes and to use some of the pedals I kept. 4 CM using the 1st loop and all my ES-5 pedals through Loop 2.
Masons does awesome boards and pedals. Love his stuff.
Was waiting for this!!!!
Man, that first note i thought you were gonna break into Hey Hey, My My. Love the build dude :D
Awesome board, I also dig the HX Effects a lot!
Starting to build my first ever pedalboard after years of just having a very very basic setup - amp and Wah and maybe one distortion pedal. I've bought the Boss MS-3 precisely because it can do a lot of what this board does- it's a multi FX but it has three FX loops for external pedals, and a crazy amount of control for such a small unit. Expression pedal, up to 4 footswitches, channel switching on your amp and MIDI too. I'm using one of the loops to run the 4 cable method, allows me to put the amp's gain in the middle of the chain.
Great board! 🙌🏻✨
That multi echo never fails to amaze me
That Novo gets me in the feels every time you play it. Maybe someday I'll get one.
Great video! Really enjoyed it.
Awesome!!! Huge fan...
Velcro is my friend. I like being able to change everything whenever. Permanent boards make sense I guess if there are roadies packing and unpacking the gear but that’s not a concern for me.
Nice kicks! Nice board!
The Spaceman Polaris is my favorite overdrive pedal. Definitely a desert island pedal for me.
@Rhett Shull ... always interesting when you do these pedal board builds, love it. 👍 ... I see your mission to reduce your reverb usage has gone out the window the same way mine has! Haha ... Would really appreciate a video on how you get your headphone/youtube audio feed and live room sound to translate... I use Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250ohm headphones... always have a great sound through speakers which translates well everywhere except through the cans ... would love some tips on how you deal with it (and I think many others suffer in the way I do) ... Cheers 😎
my eyes went O_O when they saw those flying faders! awesome boards you've got there.
Uni vibe and the reverb tank what a sound 🔥
The HXFX has been the center of my pedalboard since getting one of the earliest ones. Love it. I am curious if you are going to share any of those sounds as you have with your Kemper profiles.
that tape echo sounds amazing!
You have the most beautiful job in the world ❤️
Very nice! I need to organize my pedals in case I need to take them anywhere
Pretty dope. I dig it!!!
We have a similar set up but I am using the Wampler plexi deluxe as my main tone ,amp in a box, and the terraform instead of the helix.
Solid studio board. Keep the tidy small touring board for when we can gig again!
just started watching, and this is cool.
So glad that you put the Compadre on this board instead of the Keeley/Archer combo. I just switched back to the Strymon from the Keeley. It is so much quieter than the Keeler, and I can use the mid boost to make my American Professional Strat sound more like a Clapton Strat. Surprised that you did not put an Iridium on it and bypass the house amps, since it is a studio board.
To each is own!!...so many options when you think of pedalboards!!...
So great to see a HX Effects being used. So underrated
Ok... being a bassist who can play guitar in a trio or do some solo gigs, I was looking at the HX Stomp and a few other pedals (for whatever set list - flexible and changeable). What’s the difference between that and the HX Effects?
@@lionsdenblog the HX stomp has amp modeling, the HX FX is just the effects. HOWEVER, you can load IR’s onto the HX FX.
Came here to say this:) for me the HX FX is the ideal. Yes it doesn't have amp modeling of the stomp, but as a multi effect it's just the bomb
@@PeterJaquesMusic You are right! Most of the effects are absolutely amazing in tone, and a few are even better than the originals. Not to speak about the handling possibilities - you can do things with the hx effects you can't do with regular pedals.
I would've bought it if it had audio interface
Love that red amp jewel on the Polaris, looks cool like an old tube amp vintage vibe.
My touring pedalboard has been in storage outside various livestreams since March last year, for the same reason you wanted a new one: it’s not modular. In the home studio environment it doesn’t do me much good, I know it’d get pulled apart and then some last minute performance would come up and I’d be scrambling to get it set up for the show again. So it’s stayed put. Upside is that some pedals gathering dust for 5 years are finally seeing some love 😉
I’m sitting through a 12 second charmin ad.
Just want you to appreciate what I go through to watch your stuff.
You’re welcome.
if you watch a lot of CZcams get the premium its worth it
Killer board and sneakers on point too
I love how he doesn’t even recycle any of the old pedals, specifically how he tosses the Strymons to the side lol it’s nothing. He just tosses the entire damn board. More power to you, man! 😂
He likely has profiles of his favourite settings on the HX. At least he isn't calling them end all be all boards anymore, acknowledges the addiction.
The pedals underneath the Strymon bridge coudl've been attached upside down... and the bridge attached to hinges so it could've been tilted upwards to allow easy access to all pedals. Not criticizing, just a thought.
Hi there Rhett, great board, congrats!
I must say I am very impressed and curious by your guitar string action, at least as it is perceived in the videos. Would you be so kind to share how low you set them?
They must play as butter, but how do you manage to bend notes?
Thanks a lot!
Was quite surprised on the built at first but makes sense now for the application needed. Never been a fan of hiding pedals under a bridge, I like access to everything.
Still rocking the Jordan 1s I see 😎😎 I love those. Another great sneaker is the Adidas Entrap High Tops. To my foot they feel like Jordan 1s and they are cheaper, both are great sneakers 👍👍
I saw them Js. 🔥
Love the growth in gear your little studio has shown us. I cannot wait to see your actual home studio, the one you've talked about in dreams. I'm sure it will be one of the best home studios I have seen and we will see a lot of amazing tracks popping out of that space. Hope this year will be even more fruitful and we will see this evolution first hand!
DOD Rubberneck analog delay will do that effect too... Although it's more of an expression feature, press and hold type of thing. Also has a loop which is cool, and adjustable rate and depth modulation.
To have a pedalboard of any sorts allows for so many possibilities, especially the kinds you want!
Haven't we done this before? Oh, wait. We always do this. Carry on!
Is it just me, or does it look like the Serus J has gotten a lot more relic`ed the last couple of months than earlier? Ofc lovin the look, it just looks so different now
Don’t think it had that arm wear last time, can’t be sure though.
i think that was by design. it definitely looks great and authentic
Gonna build that bridge for my frame-only board for sure!
Rhett, thank you for brining insightful, honest, and straight forward content. I also watch Rick B's channel and I noticed both of you have the same if not similar Event studio monitors. I have not found any content on either of your channels covering these monitors and why these were chosen for your studio. I have seen these nd the 20/20 for sale rather cheap and I am considering on of the pair for my first monitors vs new kali, jbl, or Adam. Anyway, since I alwys see the Events in the background there must be a good reason why you still use them vs something more current. Could you give your experience with your monitors and your reason for choosing them?
'Cutting a cardboard box open' should be a fuzz sound 😂
Its finally here!
Would love to see the pedals highlighted when your in between sound clips play. They sound killer and always curious what the combo of pedals are for the sound!
como siempre rhett afocando con todos los equipos q tiene jajajaja XD.... excelent video rhett god bless
Amazing video!
Thanks for sharing!
Why don't you use the send/return to delay, reverb, modulations?
I would like a show that takes a tour thru the equipment within your studio. The plus and minus and why you chose the gear that you currently use.
Well at least you seem to have some crazy budgets. I probably cant even afford the board itself. At least I have the guitar and amp and I'm happy. Cheers!
The Tinsley Audio Sir Henry Uni-vibe is the best on the planet!
You’re the best Rhett!!!
Very Cool Mr. Shull.
Nice board man
Good job Rhett
Sweet board
