Kinda hard to now, since it almost all sounds the same.
The beat sounds so soft but hard at the same time. Such a classic song.
Foreal its that smooth base and hard drums
Most 90's hip-hop beats in a nutshell
That was the beauty of the 90s
sounds like a wu tang beat
Agreed
Fugees never got it wrong. This song is awesome even in 2023.

1994, I was 16, working at McDonalds, my boy came in with a cassette tape of this song he dubbed off the radio. I had never heard anything like this, ahead of their time. Real Hip Hop. Man the good old days!
I was 13 in 1994 and I was like yo 🤯 wtf this is so ill. 🙌🏽❤️🔥
Same. Got this album on cassette in 1999 or 2000 when I was about 10. Popped it into my Walkman the next morning on the bus and was blown away. I swear, I wore that tape out.

So true. And I love them all. Best choruses ever
This is so dope. The music video, all their verses, their chemistry together, the beat. 90's hip-hop is so timeless.

Lauryn was in no way about censoring women or their voices. Yes I appreciate her wholesomeness but was about equality at the end of the day.
Godly
@Mister Happy what the fuck? Dude, I was making a statement on the state of Hip Hop. Ain't no one say nothing being woke or none of that. Just made a damn general statement about the negative aspects of Hip Hop, and what how this jam brings a sense of peace and tranquility to someone who is a fan of Hip Hop. Come on dude, really though? And who is making complaints about anything? Tired of people Getting caught up in their feelings off of an opinion, and then missing the whole entire point of the comment, but only react to something specific that they don't like. Now that's sad and hilarious.
@Mister Happy He's A Mega SIMP.
Who TF is he to decide what is a "negative side" of things ?
Such a classic. I can listen to the instrumental to this song all day.

Maybe it's just because The Score is one of the greatest Hip-Hop albums in history but Blunted On Reality is still better than most things I've heard. I think people started to realize that just because The Score is the masterpiece - there's no reason to sleep on B.O.R.
L.Boogie always kills it with her verses - there's just never been anyone like her (male or female) before or since.
Whenever I meet someone who doesn't know anything about Hip-Hop and is turned off by all of today's crap - I show them Fugees, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Arrested Development, Common, Mos Def and all the rest. It's like a new religion for them and I've put them on the right path lol
Besides this & the Vocab remixes, that album sucked for the most part lol
As an example in Indie music. It’s Sort of like comparing In An Aeroplane Over The Sea vs On Avery Island. A successful album can overblow a previous albums quality and end up overshadowing it, while still giving it some come off success ironically
You're doing the Lord's work. 🙏🏾

The 90s!!! We 1970s babies represented during those years....
As an 80's baby (1981), I appreciate the 70's babies for making 90's rap the gold standard.

Jelani Jay Mozz is prolly referring to some of the primadona crap she has pulled in the past. I dunno if I'd call her a c-nt, but she's been bitchy to plenty of people during her solo career. I'm not saying she's a bitch, but you can google "lauryn hill being a bitch"...
+Rich D She had mad rhymes on Doo Wop That Thing, Lost Ones, Final Hour, and Superstar, And Everything is Everything. I think it was just more social and political than it was on The Fugees but it just shows how versatile she is.

I'm a Brooklyn girl. born and raised, this run through my VAINS!!
Yeah Lauren is a powerhouse singer. However, if you're a real hip hopper, you KNOW how good her delivery, flow, tone and arrangements are as a real MC.
I loved this song from the moment I heard it and saw the video...I don't know why is this album so overlooked...I used to listen to it all the time back in '94...This song was one my favorites during the summer of 94
...what a lot of people don't realise is that before the Fugees, nothing in hip-hop sounded like this. Absolutely nothing. Lots of groups have riffed off them ever since, but they came with a new approach to hip-hop. Props to the nth. We clearly need more of this spirit. Bless up, Fugees.
💯. I remember back in 96 as a 10 year old listening to them, I couldn't place their sound anywhere. They weren't sounding like anything coming from New York or LA, it was almost like they had created their own genre
Digabile Planets, De La Soul, Tribe?
@@jamaaljoseph4275 ...I see where you're going from sonically, but would argue that none of these three groups drew from wells outside the US at the time (musical and/or otherwise). The Fugees were also overtly political from the start - not just inward looking (i.e. strictly US issues), but truly international. You pay a price for such positioning within the industry, and they knew and accepted this.
The Fugees may have shared the same perspective as the groups you mentioned (coming from the same US black experience), but their worldview, as evidenced in their music, was definitely unique at the time. Bless.

+Anthony La Manna i honestly think that's why lauren went crazy...the industry was too fake for her
+Thulsa Doom People need to stop saying she went crazy an start seeing that the masses are actually crazy lol. Bless up still
+Anthony La Manna I like Lauren but how do you define sell out. I think sometimes people are too harsh with labels. You really don't know what goes into the creative process. If you have a song that you really, really love - if you've created something and you work with a producer who isn't 'feelin it', would you change the song? Especially if the producer says 'try this or try that or go back and rewrite this section and make it more relevant to what's happening socially in the world'. My point is everyone compromises to some degree so why do some people get slammed for it? I am not a Nikki Minaj fan but I ain't mad at her for being true to herself. Just my two cents. Not hatin' what you wrote, just respectfully disagree.
Ninjacatprincess So you think Nicki is being true to herself? interesting.
+PziGotNoFilter P how do you define true to self? nicki's music reflects HER truth. I may not agree but thats her music.

I'm from Chicago but I remember thinking Jersey was so dope when it came to rappers...Jersey is basically NYC metro but they definitely had their own distinct style. Now I see rappers like Fetty Wap who is from Jersey and u would never ever know because he sounds like he's from Bankhead. Like are their anymore original artists from the NYC metro area that are true to the landscape but still commercially appealing? The answer in 2015 as of right now is no. And think NYC metro is over 20 million people and there's zero rappers out today under 25 putting out this type of vibe. Yeah somebody might give me one or two names but back then u had too many mc's popping up out the sewer with their own style and too many records you had to get. Back then u could go boutique shopping for hip hop tapes and cd's if u lived in an urban area. I remember back in like 95 my dad threw out all my tapes I dubbed because that's the only thing I cared about was hip hop. Sadly, public education was not sparking my brain and I had like 100's of tapes with all type of rare blends like this song. I got reconnected to this song by listening to Power 102.9 in Atlanta which plays NOTHING but classic hip hop music hosted by DJ Nabs. So if u live in a big urban city y'all should start requesting classic hip hop stations because the music and culture is not going to have a rebirth. If u weren't around back then u missed out period.
+Brendaw Nashawati dude, you just brought tears to my eyes. I WANT THIS CLASSIC BACK.
I grew up in an avg size town in italy and kids my age were laughing at me cuz i used to take the train and go 2 hours away from my home town where there was a nato base. and because of that, a guy had the brilliant idea to open a record store where you could buy all the dope stuff that was on in US. that's where i started to get into pharcyde, disable planet, talib kweli, digital underground, scarface, etc.
I started a trend. close ppl to me were grateful because i introduced them to sth unique and super kool. we are all nostalgic. when i moved to london uk, that's where i got a deep immersion in the environment and man, those were the good years. move to canada after, i've never had the same quality and feeling i had when i was in london.
and nowadays, when my ears hear stuff like drake or others, my brain asks for mercy.
i would pay whatever just to go back to the 90s.
i want rap pages, i want MTV yo raps. had to go beyond my reach to manage to have a taste of this back in the day. Italy, back then, wasn't aware of all this goodness but someone i always managed to satisfy my thirst.

Was always a rock listener.. anything with guitar was my jam. Especially from the nineties. Loved nirvana, smashing pumpkins, Bush, 311, and sublime. Now, it wasn't until living in Tokyo that I was turned on to jazz for they love to play that in stores and restaurants here. Thought jazz was alright but never considered how monumental this music truly was from the culture to the influence it had. That got me into lo-fi and old rap and I thank god it did. Never tasted such flavor that is found in all music until I tapped into these genre and gave it an honest try when I was finally ready to. This being said I just unlocked more culture that was waiting for me and others that haven't sought it out yet when the lyric "never had to battle with my bulletproof vest"... always thought it was Sublime's 'What I Got' was the first to phrase it. I was mistaken. So for any late hip-hop bloomers or young ones that find this comment. I hope you keep looking into other good artists and unlocking more connections because musical tessellations like I've explained are a musicians gold. I am so happy for hip-hop.
Did you ever try A Tribe Called Quest or Digable Planets?
The best part about growing up in the 90’s was the music.

Lauryn Hill is the GOAT!
Lauryn doesn't have enough albums to be goat.
John Bell Nicki does though, right? Quality over quantity. Between Lauryn's work with the Fugees, her classic solo debut, that MTV live album was RAW ( yeah I said it. LOL), and her guest appearances...I've seen enough to know ain't nobody really seeing her. ESPECIALLY when comes to spitting about real life.
Nicki is quality, people mistake singles or whats on the radio for body of work. Nobody has done it like Nicki and while I still think Lauryn Hill is one of the best female emcees to grace the mic, none of em can match what Nicki has done in the game. And she spits that fire, you serious?
Ha ha she's GOAT with just one album. Some people shouldn't comment on youtube.
+crispinfrancis1 Nikki ain't shit! you know shit about hip hop! I would put Bahamadia against any rapper, male or female, and tell em, "get to steppin.!....'cause you got some work to do!"
She’s good at singing and Rapping and that so within five always life’s about her.
Their most underrated song.

And no, most Hip Hop artists do not or never have promoted dark skin black women in their videos that's why a lot of people literally 'bugged out' when they saw Lauryn. Yes - dark skin black women are equal in the 'really pretty' or 'glamorous' tag. If people needed Lauryn to show them, then it is their shame and our gain...
Almost 30 years now!
Dang...they don't make music like this anymore. Thank you for posting this.
The beat is so subtle but I’m sitting here damn near breaking my neck bumpin this
The song saved there career, had this song not charted Billboard they would have gotten dropped by there label, imagine the late 1990's without "The Fugees" and the solo efforts of Wyclef and of course Lauryn Hill
The baseline in this song is fucking wicked!
tough job for Pras on that one - Lauryn's verse is one of my favorite ever. So dope!
Lauryn hill preformed in Columbia sc yesterday and I went it was so much fun
+ItsmeRama zuniga..cuadrado...hames rodriguez..go colomibia

Classic music will forever live on!!!! Had the biggest crush on laryn Hill in highschool...
this song randomly just popped into my head today (july 8, 2021). had to pull it up and get blessed by it once again! 27 years later STILL a hip-hop CLASSIC!!!
Real head banger body rockn classic 2016 rap clowns take notes
Lauryn Hill always looked so happy, either was the feeling ya get when you do something you love or a facade like she had once said herself in terms of her reaction to being in the limelight. She needs to come back strong!
a slept on legend
Such a good group! All 3 with 3 different rap styles. And that more advanced bassline that shows up, so well executed. :]
This era will never come close to the 90s. Listen to that lyricism and that beat good lawd!
My favorite rap group every fugees for life........
Well, I'm a LEO ya'll, Love the Fugees and Lauryn Hill!!!!
Memories of the first time I heard of the fugees. Huge tune!!
