Cage is the worst actor to ever live.
@Jack Burton Not unless cage is trying to act like a bad actor.
So, I didn't know Ebert had said something like this, but that is my sentiment exactly. I've watch lots of bad Nic Cage Movies and still had a good time because he was in them.
I'm only here because of Abed's breakdown - "I'm a sexy cat"

Think of something safe like Holly Hunter or Don Cheadle!
Ironically, having suffered from panic crisis, that screaming scene is terrifyingly believable.
Which one?
Vinay Seth yes
If you are referring to Mandy, I did not take that as funny in anyway and completely agree. I saw it as a believable reaction in context to what just happened. He is great at fitting his acting to the tone of the scene/ film and I fully was invested.
I've personally had moments like that. Ones where screaming was a safety valve, while my brain was trying desperately to process WTF had just happened.
@@Devin_Art > He is great at fitting his acting to the tone of the scene/ film

He's invented new acting method. Nicolism.

I believe Nicolas Cage should do more voice acting in animation as I thought he was good in Spider-Verse and Grug from The Croods. ( November 30th; I just realized and Thanks to many that he has done voice acting before but I just forgot or didn't recognize him. What about Lord of War? It's a far more nuanced performance from Cage and sort of proves that he actually *can* act traditionally, he just chooses not to
One of my favorite movies.
Exactly. He's one of the best out there.
One of my favourite films and certainly my favourite Cage movie.
He absolutely CAN, but why would he (aside from his financial issues)? He can act like a conventional reliable leading actor, and great one at that, a talented one, but he is no Daniel Day Lewis. I much prefer when he is allowed or choose to be THE BEST Nic Cage out there. In the same note of Lord of War there is Con Air, he is bad? No. He is memorable? Yep. But he is exploring his full potential as a performer in those movies? I don't think so.
Lord of war, kiss of death, raising Arizona, adaptation- got him an oscar nod
Whether you love him or loathe him, he's undeniably entertaining, and at the end of the day, I think that has to count for something.
People who take life too seriously tend to throw the "entertaining aspect" out the window.

The thing I LOVE about Nicolas Cage is that he gives 100% in every role. Even when we only need about 30% Cage in some movies, he still gives 100.
He does that for us, and I salute him for that.

He's BOTH. It's because unlike other Actors he embracing the craft of Acting and tries a bunch of different things. Because of this just like so many things, sometimes you hit gold and other times you bust.
He tries a bunch of things and fails at all of them.
@Tim TheAutist exactly, summing up nic cages "acting" as something static in itself as opposed to dynamic, regardless of the movies he's in and what you think of them, is a silly notion. nothing in life is static anyhow
Even the biggest stand-ups still bombs at shows trying new shit. You are right, he's just pursuing his art form.
I mean when you're as successful as him and can pull that much money, flopping frequently isn't really a big deal as long as he had fun with it.
Benjamin r That’s the general pattern with experimentation. The vast majority of experiments are failures, while only a few are successful. That doesn’t mean the failures are pointless though as they can do a lot to inform on the successes.
Nicolas Cage always looks like he's in a different -- and more interesting -- movie than everyone else on the squad.
Indeed, he always does his crazy outbursts at weird times lol

Definitely deep. When he used to act like other actors, he won a frickin' Academy Award. He COULD do what everyone else does, and better, if he wanted to. But he is perhaps the only actor in Hollywood who isn't driven primarily by the lust for praise.
Spot on
Very true, Leaving Las Vegas is his most “method” performance, which is the most fashionable form of acting at the moment.
In that he actually got drunk, filmed himself and attempted to recreate those behaviours and movements on screen.
He did it so well he won an academy award, so he obviously can do it, but then he went back to his non-method roots.
The thing is method is quite limiting and there is an incredible breadth of styles you can do that exist outside the method.
He's an awful actor
@@mojowasabi8823 You've clearly not seen his movies enough... Man is a great actor... He just isn't the accolade whore like most of the actors today... He does what he wants...
Along the timeline of his movies would you say there was a specific one he stopped "doing what everyone else is doing"? I'm very curious!
"Deep or dumb?" Idgaf. I'm just glad to have him around
So basically, Cage is a living breathing anime character in a Hollywood setting
Best description of all time
Cage is the worlds only reverse isekai character. We're in his series, and he's the MC.
He did eat a Cockroach
yuck that's so disrespectful to anime. it's just cuz he said he did Western kabuki. he does not. just cuz he waves his arms around, does not make him comparable to a whole culture's traditions. what even is that? he thinks if he waves his arms around and says he thought about it allot it's kabuki?! he's more like a Jim Carrey that takes the joke to the point it's awkward to seem serious and edgy so as to not get type cast as a joke. As a result he still memes nicely because everyone is so inundated that they are looking for anything strange or different that stands out from the rest.
@@tedgerahedron"you have every right to consider it ridiculous, or consider it totally awesome"
Personally, I think Nic’s style just represents our primal urge to lose our minds and do ridiculous things, which is why it is odd, but great. It’s memeability also helps.
I always loved this Roger Ebert quote. It sums the whole thing up...
“There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on.
He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.”
I used to think about half deep half dumb but after watching this I think he's pretty brilliant. Wild at heart, leaving Las Vegas, adaptation, Mandy, and raising Arizona were my favs.
I love Raising Arizona
Wild at Heart is an absolute gem, why he don't collab more often with Lynch boggles my mind, they are perfect for each other.
@@baconknightproductions8297 What a performance. What a film! How can anyone not fall instantly in love with it? It never leaves you.
Face off is my favorite. Nicolas Cage doing an impression of how he thinks John Travolta would do an impression of him. And John Travolta doing an impression of how he thinks Nicolas Cage would do an impression of him.
Very few Chris pratts can breakthrough the sameness of Hollywood. But Nick Cage well he's a brand and a genre unto himself.i don't remember most of the mediocre movies from the 90s but you remember a Nick Cage movie. So GENIUS!!!!!!!!

Why do so few mention Lord of War? He was perfect in that despite being Nic Cage and it still holds up years later.
I always forget about Lord of war. Such a badass movie!!!
no The Rock and Con Air? 😬
Imagine Nicolas Cage playing The Joker?
By about halfway through I couldn't stop thinking the same thing. Until seeing some of these scenes, I just thought he was a decent enough actor, but now I see much more potential. (Also, anyone who loves the old silent classics can't be such a bad guy.)
Wasn’t he considered for Superman?
@Shawn Wood Ohhhh, yes, I remember that. Not sure how factual every bit is, but the documentary about why it failed is a decent (if looooong) story in itself: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_%22Superman_Lives%22:_What_Happened%3F
Rich Wilson wow I did not know Tim Burton was involved!
Even better....imagine the Joker playing Nic Cage!
The job of an actor isn't necessarily to be "realistic" it is to elevate and tell the story. That's why some of his roles work and some don't. They work when they are justified in the context of the story.
Julia Mimi I think we are saying the same thing there. His crazy over-the-top performances work when they are justified in the story. However Cage has had more subtle roles too that were arguably very good like in Adaptation or Rising Arizona. He makes bold choices but sometimes he doesn't stick the landing because they don't make sense in the story.
is that rite. thanks for that. its the worst most self important asshole makem job u could do. and anyone can do it. thay all make me sick

If anyone can act like you claim, explain the failure of actors in The Room or even some large productions. Filmmaking is a collaborative process, and it takes the best every part of the machine to get the job done right.

The thing about Cage is that even his moments of supposed 'bad acting' (such as him literally saying 'boo-hoo' while crying in Vampire's Kiss) are well thought out and calculated. He doesn't subscribe to acting being purely about portraying realism. That's why he's brilliant, and why so many people are uncertain as to how to take his acting in its totality.
Cage will be considered one of the true great in film history in near future for sure....he always comes with new persona.......he is absolute madness
I don't always love his performances, but I love that he is willing to experiment and take risks.
Personally, I like him in movies where his character plays a more calm, collected dude with occasional bursts of crazy. Like in Con Air and Match Stick Men. God, I love those 2 movies.
I really liked matchstick men.
Matchstick Men is flawless. Sam Rockwell is like Jack Nicholson, a more restrained version of Cagey performance.
He killed it as the Mr. Rogers esc super hero in Kick-Ass
Trapped in paradise
I really liked matchstick men.
Nic Cage is a genius. Vampires Kiss is so good and shows his talent even at a young age.
Thank you for a sincere, objective, and well researched exploration. It's refreshing in a culture of distanced commentary and sattire.
I think he is entertaining, which i think is the point of acting
maybe
Of course, but often not in the way he think's, he is
true
Nicolas Cage is good at one thing: Being Nicolas Cage. In some roles he's completely out of place while in others he fits like a glove. It really all depends on the project.
So true, I think he fits the ghost rider pretty well
I disagree. I understand what you mean with the Big Budget films - I think producers bank on it - but the indie films - even recently like JOE reminds you - he can do what he wants - and he has depth - just depends on the project. Who am I to argue with David Lynch.
I think this is the problem. Not the acting itself. Actor is an instrument, and Cage is often misused. Plus he's a versatile instrument, like a swiss army knife, and there's always a chance that you need the knife, but today he's a screwdriver.
That's why he is making a movie about him doing an actor called Nicholas Cage who is trying to be in the new Tarantino's movie. And I'm not joking, the title is "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent"
I think that's the whole point and purpose of his acting and the roles he chooses to do.
I thought vampires kiss was brilliant. Dark humor done perfectly, I couldn’t stop laughing.

This is why you don't try to analyze a meme (and yes, Cage's acting, not to mention, Nick Cage himself, have been one for years now), it only leads to pain. Lots and lots of pain.

The thing about Nicolas Cage is that he does these bad movies so he can experiment with stuff without costing the studios ridiculous amounts of money on something so risky. That's why he makes those movies. He really does enjoy the process, and he likes to "play." When the dollars come to him for real, or when he really is in love with the message of a script as in the case of "Joe," he delivers the goods every time. I feel like the argument that people are critical of Nick Cage because he doesn't following the standard realism acting style falls flat when you look at his movies individually.
Cage movies are popular and well received when the movie itself is good. It doesn't matter how interesting/unique his acting is if the rest of the movie is awful though, and he often takes roles is terrible movies. I'd argue that people think he's a bad actor simply because he's in a lot of bad movies.
@@TimtheWinzard Watch some interviews of him, there doesn't have to be an argument; he is actually interested in experimenting with acting and he is definitely different. It's easy to see in the interviews. That being said, he does take traditional roles as well and sometimes in movies that aren't very good. Not all directors will let him do what he wants.
@@DG-sp4nu That has nothing to do with what I'm saying though. I think Cage does a good job at subverting our expectations for what it means to be a successful actor. If nothing else he proves that you don't have to follow the realism's requirements to make a movie that is loved or hated, you just have to be willing to try something new. For that I appreciate his work.
He isn’t failing he is doing this on purpose and it is fucking hilarious! No one is like Nic and I love him for it! He said he wanted to revolutionize acting but realized he would never get more work if he kept doing this so he purposely started acting normal.

I've always felt Keanu Reeves has a similar acting philosophy to Cage, and on that note would love a movie where they both co-star and try to out-act each other while everyone else takes the movie seriously
In that he does something different to most actors
... and seems to be able to do only one thing?
Keanu Reeves is an embarrassingly bad actor in Bram Stoker's Dracula (which is a great movie in spite of his really awful performance) and he's the worst thing about the Matrix. Forget not liking the sequels, which is kinda subjective considering I actually like them quite a bit. But It's hard to argue if you ask me that Keanu Reeves wasn't a bad actor in The Matrix. I have heard he's improved though and that in John Wick he's good but I haven't seen any of those movies.

I'd be surprised if Keanu can spell philosophy.
Cage is so deep that even his dumb scenes have deep roots. I even liked him as Johnny Blaze. He does a lot more than just rant. Adaptation had some incredible acting, with a dual virtuoso performance by Nick and Meryl Streep.
Cage is awesome! His over-the-top performance is what makes him great, and stand out. Actors are bland today, but no one can say that Cage's acting is boring, he's too damn special.
Cage isn't deep or dumb. His style and character defy the standard binary. There's no way to measure is legend in words adequately. I respect a guy who isn't afraid to play with his craft, try voices and mannerisms between roles. Totally unique :)
The only reason he's an actor is because of his uncle, he is utterly horrendous.
And most people forget, movies are directed and actors just act the way the are told to play a role. And even if all the acting comes from cage, the people around him, liked it. Yesterday i watched gone in 60seconds again, and i enjoyed it just as much as when it was released. I have a lot of favorite movies played by Cage, and some movies of him, i don't like but who cares. He did it, and luckily most people enjoyed it enough, so others could criticize it... Most movies don't even reach that stage ;)
I would like not to compare him, but to analyze him with Jack Nicholson. Is Nicholson deep or dumb? Good actor or overacting?
I think it is one of his own. So is Cage.
I think the tone of the film needs to be taken into account too. Playing a character in an outrageous, surreal or over the top manner is just what you want in an outrageous, surreal or over the top film. But when he's doing that in a film with a more serious, dark or down to earth tone, where other actors are playing it straight, it clashes horribly and he comes across as being tone deaf or lacking subtlety.
nick cage is deeply dumb, and i love it.
Cage works hard to achieve a style which, while not always effective, is sometimes quite moving. It's not perfect, but it's definitely the right tool some of the time.
05:11 Jared Leto mailed "dead pig heads"? I would have been terrified if he mailed living pig heads!
He did. He did a lot of obnoxious things to get into character as the joker.
h elp m e
@@av201 You mean he mailed living pigs heads?
If someone mailed me a decapitated pig head, I would legit br traumatized. That's just really fucked up.
Moments of his performances are for sure memorable and the kind of thing I've rewound many times and could not stop laughing. This was an interesting commentary.
Vampires Kiss is the first Nick Cage movie I ever saw. I have to admit that I've always considered him as a very unique actor since then. Sometimes I watch movies that feature him solely to see how weird he will get.
The Weatherman: one of the most underrated movies ever
i totally forgot about this one.
I thought you were talking about The Family Man for a bit. That was weird.
@@GVilleAnarcho Just had that same reaction.
loved this video!
I'll be spending the whole week watching his movies since I didn't know him very well
He's entertaining, and never afraid to try something different. He has fun with his work and therefore is always fun to watch.
Only while watching Mandy recently did i realise Nick Cage isn't a bad actor, i've just been watching him in the wrong movies.
Watch Lord of war
Mandy, Con-Air, The Rock, Face/Off, four movies without even thinking too hard I can list are perfect.
@@gin.590 bro The Rock is one of my favorite movies ever
Nicolas Cage is like Drugs you feel real good but its also illegal and bad for your health
Greatest answer i have ever read
Pot is Neither of those......for the most part
Cannabis is the only thing that seems to help with my chronic nerve pain.. They're happy to give me loads of opioid drugs that don't help, but not cannabis, despite it being officially legal for medicinal use now.. Should never have been illegal in the first place, even for rec use considering how less harmful/addictive it is compared to alcohol. Human civilization is fucked.
I enjoyed his performances, but this video gave me a new appreciation for him.
Hello gorgeous 🌹
Thanks for the beautiful comment, I really appreciate your kind words 🌹👍✌🙏💞🤗
Face/off is one of the greatest film I’ve ever seen
Nicolas Cage starred in five movies in 2017, six in 2018, and currently has five movies in post-production, set to be released this year. The man is going to run out of methods and styles of acting. I'll still watch his movies, though.
Whats funny is even though I know he's been in stuff since I keep feeling like he hasn't been in any significant roles since the mid 00's lol.
We’d need a museum for this guy where they play a Nick Cage movie every day
he has to constantly work cos he has so much debt to pay off. Im not even joking
@@qarcon3247 how did he get so much debt?
@@qarcon3247
Oh, I know about his debts and his lust for unusual bullshit. Surely he's paid his debts off by now...unless he's only getting $100.00 per movie.
Did you guys really do this without mentioning Community?
Barley anyone in the comments is mentioning it either. :(
@@Camhin1 I've seen a few people, not all hope is lost :D
Surprised they didn’t go crazy...
that's what I thought
Remember when Abed tried to understand Nicholas Cage and lost it so he was practically possessed by Nicholas Cage?
Excellent piece. A good look at a controversial actor who I've long felt was grossly underrated. Sometimes I wonder if the naysayers don't like Nic Cage because the characters he plays have unusual but deeply motivated screen personas. He's like the insane guy inside all of us who we hide to seem normal to others. Cage represents that character finally broken free and running amuck in an otherwise "normal" world. We are left with the uncomfortable feeling that we are capable of that same kind of manic behavior if we loosen our grip on the Djin (genie) in the lamp. One slip and our secret persona is unleashed, and we can never know when or if it will happen. We bear the unresolved tension between the two realities and at times don't know which is in control.
Cage portrays the moments that aren't civilized...the actions and feelings that aren't cookie cutter normal. He. does. good.
Six seasons and a movie!
Found you cause of film theory. Love your shows. And I love Nicholas Cage's acting
He should be awarded with Oscar every year till his death for his contribution to acting academic.
Best actor in the world , hands down.
I've always loved how Nick Cage just dove right into his bizarre performances. To me, it said "I don't give a fuck, I'm doing it the way I want". That and it was just extraordinarily entertaining to see something that before I just saw as bad acting.
After having watched this video however, you are now leaving me to think that we should be more open to styles of acting that don't conform to realistic human behavior. I'm also now of the opinion, thanks to your persuasive video, that Nick Cage isn't a bad actor, he's just different.
I'd also like to add that I absolutely loved his performance in Leaving Las Vegas. As a recovering alcoholic myself, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of things his character did in the movie paralleled things I have done in my own life. His ridiculous and over the top acting worked really well for that role and as strange as it may seem to some, it was actually very realistic.
I had a similar experience watching Vampire's Kiss for the first time. It was so bizarre that I felt like I was going insane while I was watching his character go insane. I watched it with a group who thought it was a hilariously bad movie while I saw this masterpiece that helped me change my idea about what kind of actor Nicolas Cage is. In hindsight he seems incredible impressive.
I could just see him talking to the director, "Look, you hired Nic Cage. You have to know my body of work by now."
Have you seen Mandy and into the spider verse?
He can be both!
i heard the spyder one is good
watch his interview for Mandy, totally admire for his love for his craft. Very passionate actor.
To me he is the most entertaining performer of Hollywood.
His acting grabs you by your shins and never lets you go.
That scene “pissed blood” from Matchstick Men was laugh out loud funny! It was SO unexpected! 😂
