  • Paul McCartney - Tug of War
    Lyrics:
    IT'S A TUG OF WAR,
WHAT WITH ONE THING AND ANOTHER,
    IT'S A TUG OF WAR.
    WE EXPECTED MORE
BUT WITH ONE THING AND ANOTHER,
WE WERE TRYIN' TO OUTDO EACH OTHER
    IN A TUG OF WAR.
    IN ANOTHER WORLD,
    IN ANOTHER WORLD WE COULD
STAND ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WITH OUR FLAG UNFURLED.
    IN A TIME TO COME,
IN A TIME TO COME WE WILL BE DANCING TO THE BEAT
    PLAYED ON A DIFF'RENT DRUM.
    IT'S A TUG OF WAR,
    THOUGH I KNOW I MUSTN'T GRUMBLE,
IT S A TUG OF WAR.
    BUT I CAN'T LET GO,
    IF I DO, YOU'LL TAKE A TUMBLE
AND THE WHOLE THING IS GOING TO CRUMBLE,
    IT'S A TUG OF WAR.
    (Pushing, pushing,
    Pulling, pulling,
    Pushing and pulling)
IN YEARS TO COME, THEY MAY DISCOVER
WHAT THE AIR WE BREATHE AND THE LIFE WE LEAD ARE ALL ABOUT.
BUT IT WON'T BE SOON ENOUGH, (soon enough)
    SOON ENOUGH FOR ME.
NO, IT WON'T BE SOON ENOUGH, (it won't be soon enough for me)
    SOON ENOUGH FOR ME.
    IN ANOTHER WORLD
WE COULD STAND ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WITH OUR FLAG UNFURLED.
    IN A TIME TO COME,
WE WILL BE DANCING TO THE BEAT PLAYED ON A DIFF'RENT DRUM,
WE WILL BE DANCING TO THE BEAT PLAYED ON A DIFF'RENT DRUM,
WE WILL BE DANCING TO THE BEAT PLAYED ON A DIFF'RENT DRUM.
IT'S A TUG OF WAR, (a tug of war, a tug of war)
WHAT WITH ONE THING AND ANOTHER,
    IT'S A TUG OF WAR.
    WE EXPECTED MORE
BUT WITH ONE THING AND ANOTHER,
WE WERE TRYIN' TO OUTSCORE EACH OTHER
    IN A TUG OF WAR
    (Pushing, pushing,
    Pulling, pulling,
    Pushing and pulling)

In the last few seconds of the video, Paul and Linda are next to each other. Then Linda fades out and disappears. Although Paul also eventually fades out and disappears also, in those seconds there when Linda disappears, it just makes me think of her death, and Paul left alone. Touching moment of sadness there.

This video's ending is very telling. Linda vanished first--in real life, she died early. It may be a hard fact to accept, but Paul too will die one day, and he'll vanish like Linda. But the sound of the music stayed, whcih means his songs, his legacy, will remain; he's the greatest of all time.

      @NigelT57 Před 3 lety +38

Paul was always the favourite of George Martin's because he was the creative one who would listen to anything to see if it improved a song and they would collaborate. John shut down and called Martin's production 'all that shit'. George became more of a miserable bastard fixated on what the main two were earning [you wrote three good songs George] and Ringo was just 'I'll play with anyone as long as they ask because I love them all:)

@@NigelT57 this is an infuriatingly warped view of history and probably based on some dumb shit john said in 'Lennon Remembers' which is just a long list of pre-coached, heroin-fueled lies that even he denounced. george martin was definitely paul mccartney's mentor (since he recognized quickly paul's unique talent) and they did several collaborations together even before the band's breakup, but paul is infamously resistant to criticism and in fact apparently behaved quite petulantly with martin on this album & the other two he produced for him in the 80's (note that paul didn't work w/ martin outside 'Live and Let Die' in the 70s either, or after this lol), while john was always going to martin first for advice on how to achieve the sound he wanted, since he couldn't put it together in his head the way paul could. in one of his later-life interviews, john described george martin as an invaluable "translator" for the band. both john and paul could be arrogant, testy bastards, and were receptive and resistant to martin's input in equal terms (often in solidarity w/ each other), but they both valued him even if they went to him for different reasons. martin was p fed up with "the boys" in the band's last two years, setting down heavy conditions for them to follow when recording Abbey Road, so it's likely he had his own resistances to working with them again, although he did notably produce ringo's first solo album. george was the only one who seemed to have a real chip on his shoulder about martin, but that's george for you. martin even admitted later in life that he'd neglected george's burgeoning songwriting attempts. whether or not you think george was a hack who deserved to be neglected is honestly a matter of opinion, but it is literally true that it happened.

      @Gabucc Před 3 lety +9

@@NigelT57 That is true: Paul was always the favourite of George Martin's - because he was among the four who was willing to study music composing and arranging from George Martin even after all of his successful years. But on the other hand we must admit that John had a kind of unique spirit what the other three members of the Beatles didn't. George Harrison's music world a bit strange and weird - but he was a really gifted songwriter, too.

While not completely about John, there are a lot of elements that are indeed about the relationship that he and Paul had. Paul has admitted as such.
