Fun fact: Director Rob Marshall love hand drawn animation and wanted to use it to pay tribute to the medium and the first film. But The Disney Executives, at first, refused to do it and instead wanted computer animation, which made the director ticked. So, he fought hard to use it and the executives eventually let him use hand drawn in the movie. It just goes to show you need to fight hard to save something you love.

I feel like if you're going to "copy" any movie, it might as well be one of the greatest movies Disney's ever made. That's why I can't bring myself to be all that mad at "Mary Poppins Returns" for borrowing so much from the first one, and unlike a lot of the Disney sequels, I was certainly never bored sitting through it. Besides, the P.L. Travers books were also pretty formulaic, so call it a bit of accidental faithfulness. :P

I'd like to point out that unlike the previous one, this movie actually dives deep into the concept of mourning and how to grieve properly, expressing how our loved ones who have passed away are still with us after all, which yeah, has already been said many times in the past, but this one hit the bullseye, at least for me. Maybe you've never suffered from this (I really hope you haven't) so perhaps it doesn't affect you that much, but to me, that was exactly when I knew the movie was actually talking to me and helping me overcome it, and felt so grateful Mary Poppins came back once more.

  • @ceretomer5987

I feel that this movie needed to be made. The way the original movie ended in a happy/sad moment, I think that many had wondered what would become of Mary Poppins, Bert, the children and the rest. Therein lies the problem. The newer version being compared to the original. Get some people who never saw the original and see what they think.

Disney, you're a titan. A "Mad Titan" if you will, but maybe try looking around for people who have new stories to tell. Trust me, they're out there. Stop trying to play off of people's nostalgia, as profitable as it is, and show us something new

  • @CeltycSparrow

I saw this movie for the first time last night. I liked the movie. I thought Emily Blunt did a beautiful job playing Mary Poppins. She captured the essence of that character, but I never felt like she was playing Julie Andrew's character. I thought the songs were catchy and charming. The children were cute. But the word I would use to describe this movie is almost. It tries to re-capture the magic of the original movie, but it almost gets there. This movie felt more sad to me than the original. It felt more.....human. With Mary Poppins, she could disappear into a chalk drawing or go dancing across the London rooftops with chimney sweeps or clean up a nursery using magic and I believed it. This movie puts too much logic into little scenes like that and has to give it a reason WHY. It takes away the magic a bit. This movie felt like growing up.....like the first movie was childhood and immersed in imagination and fantasy, and with this one, adulthood has stolen in and taken hold and one has to put away childhood and imagination and be serious. If I could recreate the ending, I would have completely erased everything with the damn evil banker (because it was all made moot in the end anyway) . I would have had them accept their fate. I would have had Michael go to the bank and say "I'm sorry.....I can't find this paper that I need to save my family home. The house is yours. I have my children. I have my sister. We are still a family with or without the house and as long as we're together, we will be OK." and then have Bert come in and tell him about the tuppence. I liked that part of the story. it was a nice callback to the original movie and it felt like Daddy Banks had left that for his children so they would be safe after he was gone. That would have been stronger ending and then have the balloon scene with Dame Angela Lansbury.

Rob Marshall really deserves the title of being the best (live action) movie musical director of the past 20 years (even with his only bad movies being Nine and Pirates 4) & really knows how to make stage to screen movie musical adaptations work (I know MPR isn't that type of film, I just wanna sing his praises). Not to diminish what was done with the movie adaptations of Hairspray, Les Mis or the Producers, it's just that Marshall's films have that great blend between taking the adaptation in a new direction but still paying homage to classic theater tropes that I haven't seen since what Frank Oz did with Little Shop of Horrors.

I finally saw this movie with my mom and some old friends, and I gotta say it was an absolute delight. Yeah, it does borrow a lot of elements from the first film, but aside from that, it was pretty good. My favorite songs would have to be "Turning Turtle" and "Nowhere to Go But Up."
And next to the sequence from the latter song, my absolute favorite part of the movie is, of course, when Mary, Jack, and the kids go inside the China bowl. I know everyone's already said it, but MAN was the hand-drawn animation gorgeous! Not to mention how creative they got by having both the live-action and animated characters interact with the bowl itself.
Oh yeah, and Dick van Dyke's cameo was astounding!

Mat, this is what I posted on Doug walker’s review comments section and the same feelings hold true here: “Yeah, I don’t know how to feel about this movie. I’ve never seen the original in its entirety, but the clips I have seen are great. The characters are memorable and the songs live on to this day. This movie seems to miss the mark in terms of the simplicity of the original. The story seems too much to the original and the characters aren’t as memorable. I will say the movie does get the 2-d animation right and its great to see 2-d animation for once! The chase scene in the 2-d animation was entertaining.” I will need to watch the original before I can make an appropriate scoring of the sequel, and for now it is an incomplete. Also, did you know that nathaniel bandy did a collab video with Scoot the Woz on a Wii Music triggered video?

We don't try to forget every straight to video Disney sequel, we all love Cinderella 3, the 101 Dalmations sequel and some of use even liked Tarzan 2, which is a prequel.
Am I the only one who wants to the rest of the Mary Poppins books adapted?

Nope, all backgrounds that weren't part of a set were hand-painted. Fun fact, the paintings in the intro credits of this movie are by the same artist who did the backgrounds for the original.

I saw this movie and loved it the whole way through. Honestly, I don't understand the mindset of some of the "professional" critics out there (i.e. Roeper, LA Times etc.)
Movies like this, Aquaman and Welcome to Marwen all look at feel entertaining or charming. If a movie can achieve that, why nitpick at it
