  • Caen is the capital city of the county of Calvados in France's Normandy region. I studied here over 20 years ago with Texas A&M's James Earl Rudder study abroad program. Join me as I take you on a journey to visit some of my favorite locations in the city. I will also introduce Colin Taylor, a World War II guide in the area. Thanks for watching and spread some joy when you travel.

I come from a tiny city in the southeast of France, but I did my Bachelor's degree in Caen and I immediately fell in love with the place. My work has led me to live in Norway, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and I am now back to France, in Brittany, but I still feel like I have never felt more "at home" than I did when living in Caen. Can't explain it. It's really nothing special. But it's probably this "lack of extreme" that made life there so comfortable and enjoyable.
I hope my career brings me back to Caen someday. In the meantime I still go back every year for a long weekend down the memory lane.

I've been there for the first time this year. I can't believe it is not a better known place to visit. Another outstanding feature are the many small bookstores you find around town.

Me: "I studied there 20 years ago as well! Oh hang on ... no, it was 40 years ago." I did a Stage de Francais at the University. Good to see the place again (I've never been back since). This is a nicely done and informative video.

Many of the restaurants are gone now... But you should still give Caen a try > Great city. Get lost in it's alleys and enjoy all of it's mysteries!
