Underprivileged millennials: Being young, poor in Jakarta

  • Mainstream media portrays millennials as upper-middle class, tech-savvy and white-collar employees. But a study shows that even in a big city like Jakarta nearly a quarter of the millennial-aged men and over a third of the women only have junior high school education or lower.
The Jakarta Post followed the lives of two low-income millennials in Jakarta, to show the day-to-day realities faced by the generation that is the most significant part of Indonesia's much-vaunted "demographic bonus." (JP/Karina M. Tehusijarana)

    My thoughts on this video:
    1. I love the reporter, Karina. You did such a great job, girl! I love your style, the way you speak, and gestures. Such a genuine and humble reporter.
    2. Millennials are not all about sipping a cup of coffee or tea in the morning. Many other millennials out there are struggling to fund their lives.
    3. High school and university graduates may have different ways of thinking about marriage life. This might be influenced from where they are; low, middle or high class family.

Either you become successful or powerful enough to influence government or you becoming the government itself (officials/politicians) and make sure that you do your best working there. Paradoksikal?

So many of us walk this earth. With purpose in our eyes. But in our heart of hearts we know. This is a lie. The alarm goes at 6 am, so we can walk into a job we hate. Because we need the pay. All time does is take from us, But it never seems to give. Always waiting for the day to come. When we finally start to live. But we all too scared that soon we become just like the rest. Only walking with the crowd. Because our dream have been opressed. And then one day we look back at the opportunities that we missed. And realize..
We never truly lived. All we did is just exist.

Born in 1997 just like Adit, not sure if we qualify as millenials though... I am quite privileged compared to him. However, I'm really behind on people's expectations of me. In Brazil as soon as you turn 18 you are expected to get a job, find a boyfriend/girlfriend and finish your studies as soon as possible. Anyone that goes away from that path feels alienated from society. Why get married in a country where 80% of people get divorced? Why get a college degree if I will end up getting just a little over minimum wage? I think these are questions that get over our heads a lot.
A college degree wouldn't do much for me but it definitely would be life-changing for someone like Adit. I hope he focuses on himself instead of getting married and having kids at such a young age. That would be the end for him.
