Training your dogs with chicks using an xpen. Good vs bad body language

  • Day one of training the dogs around chicks using an xpen. It’s been too cold up until now to move to stage 2 of bringing the chicks out into the xpen every day around the dogs.
Stage one we hold the chicks up around our dogs everyday and asking them to be calm and “leave it”.
We didn’t do much training on day one of the xpen training because I wanted to show the dogs natural behaviors so you can see what you want to see and what you do not want to see.
Our border collies Pete and June start out with the what not to do. Pete is fully chicken trained and safe so I’m not too worried about correcting this behavior on his part. It served as a good example.
Our one year old livestock guardian dog Judge does a great job of demonstrating good body language and then Pete and June start to loosen up and you can see how you start rewarding good behaviors.
If you do this everyday it will go a long way in training your dogs to be calm and trained around new chicks and pullets by the time they go out into the coop at 6 weeks old!

My lab was so good with the chicks when we got them. He was interested but not showing predator behavior at all, I'd take him into the room with me when I'd go sit with them and he'd watch them with me, after a week I'd take them out and use his and my bodies as blocks from wandering too far and he's just watch them, it was so cute. He even started displaying a bit of a guardian streak towards them while outside, I believe he was copying me lol. When they would make a stranger danger call he would jump to action like he saw me do so many times, it only took my praising him once for doing it for him to start doing it every time.

That's clever the way you do that. This training is simple yet really clever. So great the Boarder Collies learn and it is incredible to see Judge the LGD just knowing the correct behaviour not to mention helping his new feather friends makde them feel like they are friend not foe.

This is really helpful! I have a nearly 13 month old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd with a sprinkle of Great Pyrenees and Blue Heeler and he isn’t great with cats or chickens or cows. A dog trainer friend did say though that he’s displaying bad impulse control, not prey drive, which is comforting. He’s getting better with the cats step by step, he’s just a bit heavy handed and doesn’t understand that he is so much bigger than them. The cows are less worrisome because if they turn to face him, he backs right down. It’s the chickens I’m mainly concerned about, so seeing this does offer a lot of tips!

Had a Border Collie that naturally liked the chicks and ducklings. She kinda did what yours are doing, but didn't push the wire towards them. She ended up spending all her time with the Chickens and Ducks, but really liked eggs. lol We just had to pickup the eggs when we let the birds out of the coop, and O'Reilly in with them.
Haven't had a bird-friendly dog since her. A friend had a Collie that loved to just sit and watch them, no aggression or anything, but the friend didn't want to take any chances.

Out Chow was obsessed with “taking care of” the chicks. They were in their heated box in the garage. She insisted on checking them out first thing in the morning and last thing at night. However, her gentleness became a little predatory when they got big enough to go in the chicken yard. Then after about three weeks she utterly ignored them.

I just found your channel and binge watched all videos. I LOVE watching working dogs of all kinds. Your dogs are beautiful and so fun to watch. Can you answer whether they’ve actually fought a coyote/other dog/etc that was able to make it into the farm? I’m curious if the LGD would destroy the intruder or simply maim them to get them to leave.
Thanks so much for the videos. I can’t wait to watch more

Hi, they have gotten smaller chicken predators that come in like possums, skunks. Coyotes are risk averse so they see our dogs and do not try to enter their territory within our fencing. they find easier food elsewhere. we also have a problem with loose dogs that do a ton of damage to livestock locallly and they are not risk averse but even they tend to run. haha. if a dog or coyote were to try to dig under our fencing or jump the fence they will use lehtal force to protect their stock but they havent had to that i'm aware of

They detest strangers but any animal but a rattlesnake and coyotes or predatory dogs, they love.

We never had chickens when I had my Australian Cattle Dog yes she wanted to heard everything. I couldn't let her out with my horse because he had been attacked by dogs and he would have killed her he was not good with dogs. So I worked with her a little bit with my daughter's turkeys she was Raising for FFA. Nikki did pretty good she was always trying to chase my daughter's sheep that we had. We had a ewe named Buffy. Every time I went out to feed them especially Buffy, Nikki would sit by the fence and look at me and then look at Buffy like.." okay when do I get to go to work?"

Dog are predators and protectors. So that behavior is VERY GOOD according to the nature of dog!
Idk how accurate is using words such as “bad behavior” to describe actual good behavior. It’s just up to you to train them WHEN you want them to redirect from predator to protector.
