Never had a bite, even for our big rescue (she was previously abused) she wouldn't even eat when someone would look at her. Took us months to slowly get her past the feeding anxiety. Then we got a cat that would steal her food so now she circles the room howling before eating 🤣 telling the cat to eff off. Still no aggression and it's been 14 years

My lovely dog has the same disability as Zeppelin and is also partially blind, and when we rescued him from a shelter a few months ago he had terrible food anxiety. We think he was born in a puppy mill, since he's a purebreed with signs of inbreeding, and so due to his disabilities he probably had to get aggressive in order to get anything to eat. After that, he spent a few months in a shelter where he wasn't fed with any structure or with other animals around, and wasn't around anything that was unsafe for him to eat. As a result, in those first couple months we got some gnarly bites while we were figuring out his triggers and how to work with him- all of them preventable with more foresight and caution on our part. So he has a squeaky clean record. I can't imagine filing a report for a nervous scrape like that.
(These days he's still a little edgy about his food, but recently I took him to a house party and the food bowl belonging to the dogs living there was on the floor in the living room, we walked past it several times and then stood beside it for like ten minutes with no issues 😊)

In some states if you're seeking medical attention for a bite, you have to file a report. If it drew blood, it would be a concern due to how much bacteria is in a dog's mouth. I've had an infected dog bite and it's no fun. They might have overreacted about the severity of the bite and it sounds like they generally weren't a great fit for him, but if they went to urgent care or a doctor it might have been out of their hands to file a report or not

    • @brilee4772

It’s not the size of the bite, it’s the fact that the bite broke the skin. If you get bitten by any animal and it breaks the skin, you need to have medical treatment to prevent an infection or other diseases, just like if a human bit you and broke the skin, so this isn’t even specific to dogs. When you get medical treatment for any kind of bite, the person treating you is going to tell you to fill out a bite report. This doesn’t mean the person who got that is some evil dog hater who wants to put Zepplin down.

We are her family and my kids love her. We would never do that to her. She is also recently back on her anxiety meds. After training her and her being with us for almost a year now she's been alot better. A house without kids and maybe older people that have relaxing lives who live not near a city. A bite is a bite. Once a dog bites, it is easier for them to bite the next time. Even though it’s small, it’s extremely serious. I hope Zeppelin finds the right home, but it’s important to understand that no matter how small the bite might be, it still shows that he will not hesitate to bite if he feels uncomfortable. Obviously I wasn’t there, so I didn’t see if he was giving off any obvious warning signs prior to the bite, but I personally would not adopt a dog with a bite history. Its not worth the risk for me.

I agree. For some reason, people think the dog should come to them all perfect. Just like people, they come with different temperaments. The dog is entering a new environment and needs time, the encouragement and understanding of the people he is with, to feel safe and loved. There's a transition. Think how you would feel if you were suddenly dumped in with a whole new family. And love your dog. We all need love, and it will go a long way with your new pet. ❤

How does the dog know witch is its actual home when as soon as he feels safe hes taken away? Could that be the reason its more agresive? Or is it just this case and they usually are ok? Or do they only let particular dogs in foster due to particular circunstanses?

@@ilovecyllan It's pretty common with shelter dogs. If you watch Dog Daddy, Cesar Milan, or other good dog training videos, you will see them handle so many dogs. Cesar says only in America are dogs so neurotic and psychotic. He and Dog Daddy handle dogs on their last chance. But every dog they handle comes out so much better. Dogs develop a lot of fear when the owner fails to see to their needs, when they don't communicate with their dog appropriately - responding to your use of the leash or standard commands. A dog will give you back what you give it.
Also, people expect dogs to be like people. No, dogs communicate in a whole different way. You have to come into their world and use their language. In that way, your dog will become a welcome part of your family and everyone will live in harmony.

I adopted a dog who had been returned to the shelter twice because he nipped somebody. When I got him he was like Cujo, but he looked like Benji. People would want to approach when we walked but I would always keep them away from him. He loved me but strangers, to him, meant he had to protect himself. I knew if I returned him they might euthanize him and I couldn’t bear the thought of that. It took him a few years to completely decompress and he ended up being a wonderful dog who loved everybody. I could have company over and no longer have to close him up in the back room. You just have to give them time. He taught me that. Gus was a great lil fella. I miss him almost every day.

As someone who has helped foster reactive dogs - and from a place of love for both you and Zeppelin - when placing, start really super slow. Visits with you in his space that he's comfortable in. Walks as a group (people he's comfortable with + new people) to solidify his new bonds with new pack members. Visits to his new home with you that result in him going back with you. Visits where he stays somewhere else for a couple of hours at a time before you pick him back up. Transitioning a reactive dog who adjusts really slowly to new people can be a weeks/months process. I wouldn‘t even think about giving him away because of that. He doesn’t like to be picked up, I needed to pick him up, so he didn’t get hurt. He bit because he is severly traumatised. It’s okay. I decided to adopt him although he is difficult to handle, so I pay the price and not him. Besides the scar on my face looks kinda cool actually. And over the years he became the best friend I ever had and to this day he never bit again. I can even pick him up now. He just needed his time and not just weeks. He needed years before I could even pet him. I really don’t understand why people get a dog, especially a rescue dog, when the don’t want to give them the time they need and go with them through the good AND the bad times. I was housesitting for family, they had two dogs. One was a rescue with jealousy issues, and the other was anxious. They ended up fighting each other when I got back from a walk (They needed to be walked one at a time) I got bit during the attack and not only did it bleed, it scarred. (Both of the dogs are fine, with only minor injuries)
I knew what I was getting into. It was the first time they fought in three years and I was just unlucky.
I didn't file anything against the dogs and the fact that those people filed a report over a graze is insane to me. I get marks like that from my puppy when she accidentally plays too rough.

True but as a parent, I want to be assured that any incident like that is recorded.
One of the things that puts people (especially those who have kids) off rescuing is being unsure of safety. An adult dog has a history. It’s not like getting a puppy. People need the reassurance that an incident like that is recorded and disclosed. Maybe if you don’t have kids you won’t understand.
I’ve been there. I was vegetarian when I was 4, when my family weren’t, it wasn’t fashionable and there weren’t the amazing vegan options there are now. Why? I love animals. And I absolutely think they’re important. But they do NOT even register as important if it’d mean compromising the safety of my kid.
Any history of going past a warning bark to actually biting is important. A lot of animals WOULDN’T be willing to do that, but he did and it should be disclosed. Could you imagine if it weren’t and a family adopted him, he bit their kid, and they then found out about the bite history? The shelter would be sued into oblivion, it’d be a great news item the media would love it. People would be even more reluctant to rescue an animal.
      Stop thinking emotionally

    • @JordanPM77
      @JordanPM77 Před 10 měsíci +54

@@Sofia-th1fz you are far from correct.
Dogs are animals, not humans. If you put an animal in a position where they feel like they are being threatened, and they communicate that to you but you still continue, they will respond and protect themselves. Be it fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, a dog will respond to feeling threatened.
Bite report are used as a record of the dogs “propensity for violence”. The bite is just used as evidence to suggest that the animal in question has a propensity for violence. Bite reports have levels and depending on the state, the bite victim has responsibility in the situation.
Yes if it’s a dog with a severe and aggressive propensity for violence, that needs to be recorded and handled *but* you don’t know the situation and Zeppelin easily could’ve been trying to grab the toy and their finger got in the way and if this situation was a misunderstanding, having a bite record is extremely detrimental to a dog like Zepplin.
As a concerned parent, you shouldn’t need a bite record to be prepared for the fact that a dog is an animal and if triggered in a specific way they might react negatively. If you have any animal in your home with your children, you should be knowledgeable about how animal behavior works and should act accordingly. Relying on the presence of a bite report to be what tells you about the nature of the dog is irresponsible and even further, assuming that the absence of one means a dog won’t ever act out with aggression is why situations like these occur. The people that have this mindset are always the ones that blame the dog for their own lack of understanding.
So many innocent dogs are put down because people misunderstand the behavior of dogs and like to treat dogs like they aren’t still animals by nature.
Like if someone tried to take a toy from a tiger and it bit them, you’d be like well you were kinda asking for it bc why on gods green earth did you try to take a toy from a tiger. Common sense would tell you that’s a bad idea bc most likely you will get bit.
Rescued dogs are typically more akin to a wild animal than a domesticated animal so trying to take a possession from a rescued dog that youre just getting to know isn’t a wise thing to do. This isn’t an emotional thought, it’s an objective fact.
People really need to stop getting dogs that they aren’t prepared for and then turn around and blame the dog when they do something bad instead of recognizing their own ignorance about how a dog communicates through behavior.

If he were to sneak up on her and put pressure she would probably think it was a different dog (she's going blind and is deaf) and snap a little, but not maul anyone. So I teach my kid not to touch her hips, and I don't leave them alone.

As someone who comes from a family of breeders and trainers (dog show family im not involved nor am i enthusiastic about buying vs rescuing but only saying so can know that its not just rescue dogs who do this) DOGS SOMETIMES BITE. It can be accidental during play time or it can be a fear/trauma response, which can be common in any dog regardless of when you got them or where they came from. Its something to work on and train through and yh sometimes medicate and alter how you interact to reduce the risk (should be altering from the get go until dog is comfortable but at least altering if you see a negative response from them and maybe keeping those adjustments if they have longterm issues) but if it is YOUR DOG then reporting a bite is like reporting your infant for domestic abuse for accidentally hitting you while playing. Its an overreaction and not only damaging to the dogs life but makes you look unbelievably stupid. I hope Zeppelin finds a forever home that can support and love him the way he deserves and that the owner that reported him and surrendered him gets blacklisted because no animal deserves to be treated like that
