    Hi Sosa, you did a great job breaking down the whole DevOps, and the teams as well. Great job!!. I just have a question regarding git branching, code review. From what I got from you, seems like code review occurs after the build takes place and it runs without fail in the testing environment. Is that always the case, or can code review and merging also happen before it is ever build? Please clarify my doubts.
    Thanks

    • @heysosathedev
      @heysosathedev  Před 3 lety

      Hey Larisa, good question. The build happens whenever you push a commit to your branch, assuming that you've already setup the PR and the branch for remote tracking. Now, every time you push a change, a build will run which includes running in the testing environment. At the end of the build, you'll get a status on whether or not it passed all the tests. If it does, you can add engineers to review the PR but, theoretically, you could add reviewers at any point. I like to add reviewers after I'm done writing the code and when the tests are passing. But merging cannot happen without 1. building and passing all the tests 2. an approval from a reviewer. Hope that clarified things!

I want to completely move to Devops but I scared as if I some how got the job and didn't able to make it there then? I like automation using shell scripting, Angular code, Jenkins. I am self learning kubernates and Docker. Could you help counseling me. Guide me that how should I enhance mine developing as well as Devops skills. What projects should I made?Is moving to Devops do I need to be good in Development part too.

    What do you think are the pros and cons of working in dev ops? I heard from some people it’s a chill job and I’m in healthcare looking to get into tech

    Hi @Sosa, love the video and explanations!
    I'm a mid-level DevOps Engineer (more specifically in "Linux") myself had now 3,5 years of DevOps experience, but still feel like I'm a Junior in it most of the time :/
    What is your approach or method on troubleshooting issues? I still have not yet developed a method of my own, but can still extrapolate reasoning on how or why an issue has occurred or reverse engineer issues by reproducing the issues in order to fix them.
    Would love to hear or your thoughts on how you solve specific issues!
    Thanks in advance! :)

    Loved the video. I'm in a similar role though lately I haven't been able to do much development and been stuck more on the ops side. How much ops: development ratio do you do? Do you also use infrastructure as code such as terraform and AWS?

      Thanks so much for watching! I really try to work with my manager to make sure I do a little more development work than ops. For the past few weeks I've been working on adding a new feature to our Jenkins instance, so about 80% of my time has been development. Usually, I try to aim for a 60/40 split. And our product is a desktop application so our infrastructure isn't in the cloud (yet) but we use a combination of Ansible and Salt.

      @@heysosathedev That's great that you have a relationship like that with your manager, trust me you're in a very lucky position. I work with AWS, chef, terraform and recently JS to build an app for updating our images, so I am getting to do more dev stuff finally. There aren't many CZcamsrs who are in a proper devops role, especially who do dabble more on the dev side so your perspective is very interesting. Keep it up 😊!

    So I haven’t declared a major yet. I am worried about math. Were you good at math? How did you handle that part of the computer science major? Also side note I’ve been in school for so long having a hard time picking a major. I can’t get into the engineering program so I decided maybe I should try computer science. Can you make a video somewhere along the lines of, how one would know if computer science is not or is the right field for someone?
    I’m interested in engineering things, inventing things, science but I also love managing and being in my feet. I fear that computer science might not be for me. The thing that I’m almost worried about is math.
