    When he says 'my heart's still pumping', the drums come in as if to prove to you your heart's still beating. Amazing feeling when I first heard this. Just feel the blood pumping through you, then the drums come in,
    and you feel your heart beating, and then the music just flows through you.

      It's funny you say that. After Hail to the Thief, Thom posted somewhere an abridged tracklist that would've made that record so much tighter and it probably would be talked about as one of their best the way OKC, Kid A, and In Rainbows are. I think they started leaning towards tighter records after that. I know these tracks where left off because they weren't done, but it's ironic that people look at the tightest record they made as incomplete, and Thom looked back at the loosest as too much.

      I agree. I think they are probably the best at it out of everyone. I know there are a lot of artists that do this sort of thing and some are probably more experimental than Radiohead, but I just feel like Radiohead can do what anyone else does far better than anyone else. Also, when Radiohead play around with the ol' drum machine... It really makes me hyper aware of the unnecessary nature of Remixes.... Because Radiohead know their way around the mixing and remixing and drum beat patterns far, far, far beyond any of the remix artists - which I just find annoying!

Then when he turned 17 he left with his mother to Switzerland and later on he found a job as a butcher there. Only years later I was told he really had a hard time when he was a kid; he had lived stuff that would make anyone feel terribly hollow. This song is like I'm inside his head, listening to what he might be thinking every morning.

    Back in the 90s, in my youth.. I wasn't particularly interested in music. I heard good music and I liked it.. It just didn't really bother me. Then I heard Creep for the first time and my eyes/ears were truly opened to music better than I ever imagined. Years later... The song Cuttooth gave me that feeling too, totally unexpectedly.. I thought that, before then.. Music was as good as it could get.. And most of it was done by Radiohead. The B-sides "Cuttooth, Worrywort and Fog" blew my mind and I realised.. There's no limit to how great music can be... The limit is the human ability to write and create it. This song was the latest that I felt opened my mind to what was possible. When I first heard this song and the drums kicked in... I felt as though Radiohead could pretty much "hold the world to ransom".... Yes we live in a world of music piracy.. Where artists don't earn money from their music.. But from touring and merchandise.. But I felt that this song was so good.. That Radiohead could just threaten "There'll be no more of this.. Unless you pay us money!"

      @ro32x Před 10 lety +8

      The exact same thing happened to me, U2 was about as good as it got, then you started scratching around with the likes of Pet Shop Boys!
      But then one day I heard Creep on the radio and loved it, but never heard the artist name! About 2 years later I heard it again (Robbie Williams was playing his favourite tracks on radio1, and it was one of them), this time I got the artist name.
      My mate lent me their only 2 albums out at the time... and i thought 'now this is real music'. When OKC came out it blew my mind, it sounded like no other music ever released. Same with Kid A... and so on.
      We are lucky to have lived through the progression and anticipation of the RH era (and seen them live). No future RH fans, for the remainder of humanity, will be able to replicate that journey.

      I've actually tried to do this "journey" thing you're talking about with any new bands I get into. I'll start from their first album and, of their catalogue, listen to only that album for months, before I move onto the next one. To really immerse myself in the progression experience. The thing is, there's few bands out there that even have that level of progression. I still like properly appreciating and learning an album before I move on, now that I'm into audiophile-level HiFi, but seriously... What band out there progressed like Radiohead.
      I get that it's all likely "smoke & mirrors" and it's just Thom and the guys trying to change things up each time, but I just can't think of a band out there that reinvents themselves in such a progressive way, where it really lends itself to immersing yourself in one album at a time. Sure there are plenty of artists that reinvent their style - but it doesn't have the same progressive feeling that Radiohead achieved.
      So.. Yeah... I feel so lucky to be around for the "Real-Time" progression. I find it really gives the albums context, when you experience their release in "Real-Time".
      That being said, I didn't actually get on the Radiohead Train until Ok Computer. It was like '97 when I first heard "Creep", it was featured on a promo CD from a Nintendo Magazine and with it being kind of "pre-internet/youtube" days, it wasn't until my uncle gave me a cassette tape of The Bends and Ok Computer that I really got into them properly. I had bought Pablo Honey, but had no idea what was to come from The Bends and OK Computer on those cassette tapes.
      Then, with Kid A, I remember my friend and were stunned and dismayed at first. We were like "what's happened to Radiohead?? This.... Doesn't seem that good". We had faith though, we knew there was something we were missing and so we kept listening to Kid A and it wasn't until we went on holiday to Majorca with some friends and would take turns staying in each night, to get stoned and listen to Kid A. I remember my mate coming back and I was stoned out of my mind, ranting at him that "there's extra songs! New songs appeared on the cassette tape, man! They weren't there before!!!".... But really, it was just that I finally really got Kid A.. And when that happened, and my mind opened to it, it all sounded brand new - even though I'd listened to the tape several times before that night.
      Fuckin' Good Times, man!

    i think this is part of the king of limbs. Look at the damn limbs on the art work! They just like to release songs out like this because it catches our attention more and creates a bigger "hype" for the songs. I think its just another great idea radiohead has Someone in the group obviously has studied business/ economics because there is a certain theme to each album that makes them unique and marketed well, not in a revenue aspect but more in a way that leaves the listener constantly satisfied

      There are so many amazing Radiohead b-sides that are album-worthy it is insane. Think _Talk Show Host_, _Pearly_, _A Reminder_, _Fog_, etc. I totally agree that _Staircase_ deserves to be on an album proper, but then I've maintained the same about _Talk Show Host_ for years, so it's just more of the same!

      It seems relevant to mention the _In Rainbows_ second disc here. I have met few people who even knows this exists, and that includes my friends who like Radiohead. Yet songs like _Down Is The New Up_, _Last Flowers (To The Hospital)_ and _Bangers & Mash_ are just as good as those on the album (and in some cases better, imo).
