In 2003, Sunderland was relegated from the Premier League with 19 points, a record low points tally. Three years later, they broke their own record. Iain Macintosh recounts Sunderland's worst ever Premier League season, featuring such auspicious characters as Mick McCarthy, Jon Stead and Kevin Ball.

This is the narrator needed for the more comical and astounding stories of the game's past. Sunderland being relegated in pitiful fashion, IS such a story. I say this, as a long suffering Sunderland fan.
Head up man, 5 - 0 tonight, mark my words. We're on the way up with Parky at the wheel
Up the Boro
@@gilinachshen8094 Tranmere didn't have a chance, that night. Though it's amazing how much can happen in 8 months...here's to a 3rd season in the 3rd tier. Stay safe and all the best, chief
Narration sounds a little like it should be a children's book. It's not necessarily bad but it's not the same authoritative tone I'm used to!
We all need to be read to like a child once in a while
Tifo Football no we don't. It sounds ridiculous
@@bhongosibanyoni9171 I like it. Sounds good.
Ok so it wasn't just me! I got this mental image of the narrator with a circle of 30-year-olds around him, sitting in a circle, cross-legged on the floor, him reading with the book facing out so that they could all see the picturez

Preach it
As a long standing Derby fan, being in a packed Pride Park that season to see Claude (Clod) Davis and Bob Malcolm was truly a sight to behold. Our fans were unbelievable all season long and tickets were not particularly easy to come by. Season tickets sold out rapidly before the season started (my Dad and I couldn't get them for love nor money nor time spent in the lengthy pre-season queue), and individual match tickets at ÂŁ46 a pop for an adult in the Toyota Stand were even pretty hard to get. Pride Park had sell outs all season of around 33,000 and honestly if the capacity had been upped to 40,000 or so (as the owner intended if we stayed up), I think we could have easily filled it - even if we had played atrociously bad football as we did. At least I celebrated my 18th birthday watching Derby play Newcastle (one of the half dozen games I got to watch) and we won our only game that season 1-0 thanks to Kenny Miller. Happy days!
Great story!
As a Rangers fan we are sorry about the Bob Malcom
I, for one, very much enjoyed the voice behind this video. Love your work on the Football Weekly Podcast Iain. Cheers.
Thanks Phillip, we enjoyed working with Iain! - Danny
Really enjoying this series chaps. Good work!
I really enjoy the narrator and stories! Keep it up!!
Love Iain Macintosh.
joshfcum get out
good video and narration. History is always dramatic so keep it up! a video on afc Bournemouth?
These sunderland seasons would look like Real Madrid 2016-18 compared to the Derby County 07/08 season. Please do it. 11 points, 32 consecutive games without a win, -69 goal diff, several games lost for 5-6 goals, 1 single match won in the whole season. I mean this is a level of "shit team" one would struggle to find somewhere else even compared to sunderland.
nice
Always love watching your videos buddy.
The game that always stays with me from that dire period in Sunderland's history is one against Charlton in 2003, when they lost after conceding three own goals at home...courtesy of their own strikers!!
How has this channel not got at least 500k subs??
Keep it going guys
This narration is underrated
If you thought this was bad đđđ
That's nothing compared to derby county abysmal 07 08 season where they only got 11 pointsđđ
YEAH I LIKE THIS TONE BETTER. WE LOVE THIS VOICE AND PLEASE STAY IAIN.
SUPERB JOB MATE. have recommended my friends to subscribe to your channel. really the content quality is just top notch !
just don't lose your passion and quality when fame hits you later in life â
do you mind doing what happend to Leicester in the past two years ? the rocketing season and this season
I genuinely enjoyed that, the layout is superb!
Thanks Scott! - Danny
Please do Derby County next! That was my first premier league season I actually had access to watch pretty much every game and analysis in the US and it was a crazy sight to see. I'd love to hear yall tell the story.
This series is great for me as an Australian who got into Foorball later on in life. Literally every episode is like a gift to be unwrapped as i have no knowledge of it. The only one i remembered well was Machester united's 07/08 team. While i think of it could you do an episode on the entertaining career of Carlos Tevez. In fact i think you should do more stat driven stories of great players like the original Ronaldo or Eusobio.
I love these portrays of teams, its indept and insightful for a football fan like me. Do you have a video on Liverpool pre Shankly in the 1950's under George Key, I believe it was.
How can a team not bad between the wars and even Champions after WW2 in 1946 get into such a mediocre position in the mid table second teir.
Shankly used the same staff as were there before.
If you could explain that it would be great.
Thank you.
I like the other narrator more than this one.
Although this vid is three years old, i'd like it to be known I'm a big fan of this narrator. Sometimes you need this level of jolly to bring you up.
i like your style how you present all the subjects ... very good

Some top videos on this channel fellas! Can you do a video on the rise and fall of Cardiff City? (Tan buying the club and everything looking good as we then got promoted but then things went sour and relegation swiftly followed.) I say fall but we might be on our way back to the top (touch wood) next year with Warnock! Cheers
I searched bed-time stories and this was one of the suggestions
And as a football fan, I couldn't resist....

Do a Blackpool in the prem 2010-11 season
Although it pained me to watch that I love these videos ...little did we know what was to come......ha way the lads ....still getting over 30k In League 1 âș
Wow, I remember how this happened during my childhood - that was a hugely disastrous season for Sunderland, and everything just went wrong with them. My friend, who was a huge football fan, even sarcastically described Jonathan Stead as the best English striker in the last decade since Michael Owen due to his output of 2 goals in league that season. :P :P :P :P :P
Think Sunderland may finally go down this season but they've proven resilient in accepting their fate in recent seasons. Interested to see how that plays out!
What you've got to remember is that Newcastle bring 52,000 every home game in the Championship
When you're top of the league...isn't that difficult.
Mackem Fury we were anyway towards the end of last season after we'd been relegated we had enough fans to fill out your stadium
Really fair and even-handed that. Especially noticing how loyal the Sunderland fans are.
"O Sunderland" đ
As a Derby County fan, please, dear God do not upload that "other story" you mentioned at the end. Please.
Your plea has been heard
Tifo Football Please Please Please Do The Derby Video. Iâd love to see a video on derbies 2007-2008 season.
Hahaha
Eye_Dee a long season it must be said pal. Just patiently waiting to go back up although thatâs going to be a while at this rate..
@@benw9427 Three years later, they did the Derby video
4:33 that's called loyalty my friend. My team hasn't won the league since 1999, we always end second or third, we have had so much disappointment in the last 15 yrs, except for three cups and a UEFA Cup, but that's nothing from a former European giant. last season we had 7 straight defeats, but the fans kept coming to support the team. in good and bad times, our 50000 seats stadium, 'de Kuip' is, and will be always full.
Feyenoord & Sunderland, pals forever!
Please Please Please Do the 2007/2008 derby county season.
One of the best football based channel
Could you make a video about heart of Midlothian almost going into liquidation because of the dodgy dealings of then owner, Vladimir Romanov, how we got relegated, set a new league points record and how the club is slowly rebuilding its self and trying to go fan owned thanks to Anne budge and the supporters trust? I think it would be an incredibly interesting video
Sunderland for a few years were like that sneeze that wasnât a sneeze until about 30 seconds later: persistent, but finally let out.
I like this guy keep letting him narrating videos đđđ
cannot wait for the derby video
Good video.
Do a video on how leicester stabbed Raneiri in the back
Deveshan Govender Not all the facts are out yet
Best wait till the end of the season before doing that one
Hard to prove
Would love a video on Middlesbroughâs 1996-1997 season. Surely one of the strangest seasons ever experienced by a club in the EPL.
Chris To Newcastle didnât have bad season that year Aswell
Loved how Iain Macintosh narrated. Better than some in tifo
Think they topped this with last season 24th in the championship
How about a video on managers who are too good for the championship but out of their depth in the Premier league like Alex Neil. ETC.
I like this narrator
I'd like a video on the epic Everton v Wimbeldon game on May 7, 1994
Please Please Do The 2007/2008 Derby Season!!!!!!!!
Do one about the glory days of Aberdeen with Alex Ferguson!
As a Geordie I actually miss having them in the prem, the derby games were the best!
Sadly for Sunderland! This maybe the last we see of them for a while! Deep in debt, very few good players want to play for them! Most of their roster was pretty old, etc.
Wouldn't be surprised to see them in the Championship or possibly lower for at least the next 5-10 years or longer!
Prescient
you were spot on
this is more entertaining than usual.. keep it up!
Been nearly a year and we're still waiting on Derby County lol

Whereâs the Derby one? I want to see our famous year in the style of a childrenâs book

Do one about Derby county's season in 2007/08
this new narrator is good. He sounds like someone telling a epic story around a campfire.
do the 07/08 derby season pls

Just like the other one
You seriously need to do the story of Derby County's abysmal 2007-8 campaign... even worse than either of those.
This is a much better style to listen to. Excellent narration!
Nothing gets bizzaee than sunderland 0-3 charlton in 2003
Can't wait for the 'Tales from Derby County'
you gotta do one about derby's season.
I'm sure it's on the cards - Danny
Sunderland fans are brilliant, the problem is that the team has had bad luck with management. It seems like those who take over come to make money off the team without investing properly or setting any respectable goals!
Sunderland is a huge team. The team were champions six times and won two FA cups. At one point, at the end of the 19th century, they were considered to be the best team in Britain, which made it the best team in the world. I know it's way back, but how many teams can boast that at one point they were so highly regarded? Not many.
The best thing for the team is to be managed by the fans, but someone needs to start that move.
Cant understand all the hate, Iain & uMAXit team have done an incredible job for this channel.
Keep up the good work boys, still loving your channel & Iain's voice.
Thanks mate :)
Can you do one on the Derby team that did even worse.
Do the derby county 8 point season
Where's the ASMR narrator? Who's this new guy?
Love it, another top video. uMAXit have hit a purple patch in the competitive league of CZcams football journalism.
Woo!
Hate to break it to you that wasn't steads last premier league goal he scored for Sheffield united in the prem
And then 2009 rolled around and The Derby County story began...
Not only did we make the play-offs in 03/04, but we even managed to get to the FA Cup semis. Fast forwarding to the 15 point season, we need to thank the fog, causing a postponement of a game vs Fulham, we snatched 3 points in the rearranged fixture. I have absolutely nothing against MM, he didn't have any money - but what he did spend on it was very logical (and like you say, fairly solid).
Thing is, the money he spent on the players he brought in could have got us One Darren Bent, who scored 18 that season. Nothing against Mic Mac but his signings were awful even if he had nothing to spend.
Charlton paid ÂŁ2.5m for Bent - there was obviously no leeway in the budget for us to sign someone *that* expensive. Personally, I would have kept Tommy Smith, who was a cracking player for us. MM did well considering he was up against it: Kelvin Davis (ÂŁ1.25m) - Championship Goalkeeper of the Year 2004; Tommy Miller (Free) - Good, solid, goalscoring midfielder; Stubbs (Free) - Experienced defender; Nosworthy (Free) - Risky, but still had a degree of experience in the Championship.
JEFFWHITLEY we all know how davis turned out, there was other stuff like basilla as well, some really poor signings but i doubt many would have done better with the resources
Obviously, but hindsight is 20/20. Davis was a good keeper before he joined us, and after, when he joined Southampton.
I'm still waiting for the Derby County video.
Derby County -2007/08 with 11 pts !
that wasnt Jon steads last goal in the bpl he scored for 8 goals for Sheffield United
