It’s been six years since The Strangers stalked prey, and they’re finally back on the big screen with Chapter 1.
Billed as a reboot of the series, it plays more like a remake.
But, was it good? Let’s discuss

It felt like TikTok saw the 2008 original and thought, "OMG, so scary! Let's remake it exactly, but with our generation's vibe, prettier cinematography, and then call it our own. I have zero hope for Chapters 2-3 but my dumbass will be seated of course. It’s a 1.5/5 for me
Franchise Ranking:
1. Prey at Night (4/5)
2. The Strangers (2.5/5)
3. Chapter 1 (1.5/5)
When that Nights in White Satin kicked in I was like LET’S GOOOOO!!!! It always reminds me of Halloween 2, which I’m a huge fan of both Rob Zombie Halloween films as well. 🤘🎃🤘
That moment was probably the high point for me, dead serious
I think they made a huge mistake rebooting the original again it was not needed
Every decision about this never sat right with me from the beginning, and my fears were justified sadly
So ture
I love horror movies and The Strangers is my favorite movie but this movie was bad to be honest.
It had a really excellent beginning, it did a good job introducing the characters and side characters they meet on their trip. Everything was building to that dread then the movie fell apart about mid way through and it draaaaggged and dragged and the killers were completely overexposed. The woods scene goes on forever and my friend was falling asleep. Then we get a really flat ending too. I give it a 5/10 because it flamed out and I was ready for it to end. I was really looking forward to this one all year. Great review Nick
Really enjoyed your review. The first Strangers has such reverence and importance to me, I remember the first time watching it, the conversations with friends, & just the high of seeing it. It’s on my Rushmore of horror movies. The second goes off the originals track & gets nuts with it (with a top notch soundtrack) and provides a fantastic time.
This movie put me in concrete. At no point did I care about anyone, I couldn’t have reacted if you zapped me with a taser. I’m not sure why this needed to happen but we’ve seen bad entries in franchises before, so I’ll go into chapter 2 with an open mind.
I enjoyed it for what it was. I’m very curious of what they will do in the next 2.
I figured the problem with this was going to be the fact it was to much of a retread of the original. If you reboot something you need to really do something new or fresh with it to make it seem worth being made in my opinion.
Why would they escape the bigger cabin just to run into the smaller cabin and trap themselves again? I would’ve just ran out into the wood and kept running.
Big time bummer to hear this… loved the first 2!
And again, I urge you to form your opinion for yourself. It just didn’t land with me
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn the thing is, I usually tend to agree with you on 95% of films, we have the same taste. Next would be drumdums and for y’all both to say it’s bad, it’s gotta be lol. Doesn’t sound for me, I’ll stick to the OG and Prey at Night! 🤣
It’s a good movie but sadly it just feels like a remake
Totally agree with your assessment, nothing new or interesting was brought to the table. Wash, rinse and repeat. In 2024 you have to be more original and creative and bring something different to the screen.
I agree completely. Just a waste of time
I think for us diehards, this was a miss. But I saw it with a few friends who are casual movie goers, and they all loved it. The two girls in our group were shaking during some of the scenes.
(I’ve seen the movie) As soon as you mentioned that it packed so many tropes i realized you were right and I now have to figure out how many were used cause MAN
SO MANY lol
i thought it was absolutely awful. If this doesn't do well financially, those other two chapters are heading straight to streaming. Trailers looked good, but I knew better given that Renny Harlin was directing. This thing was a total wet fart.
Yeah, it really wasn’t worth the money or time spent for me. That’s a Thursday night I’ll never get back lol
The first movie was okay. Definitely atmospheric and creepy.
Prey At Night was better and was paced very well. Good soundtrack too.
Probably gonna wait for a library rental on these, save my money for some better films
I hope when you do see it, you like it. But if you weren’t a big fan of the first, I don’t see how you could like this one. It’s just a lesser version of the first
I watched this in my theater the only one there. The chick with red hair was on cw show riverdale good show.
I would love to see you rank this franchise ❤❤❤❤
Just got home from seeing it and I gotta say I agree with most of what you’re saying Nick. i liked it ok, but it certainly wasn't great.
Ps Nick you should check out 2 short films on here called The Strangers origins, very well made and they only go a few minutes each.
I loved it! But I love every new movies that comes out and I have no taste anyway!
Stopped by the bathroom on the way out of the theater. Overhead two guys talking to about how bad the reviews will be. 😂
They were right 😂😂
What year was this supposed to be? Where did she get that flip phone?
while watching it all i could think is, who is the target audience for this? they either think no one saw the original at all or something because man it was so lazy and uninspired.. and we have seen remakes of movies in the past be similar but also be different in their own way! but nope this was literal copy and paste but with different actors lol.. i checked out pretty early on sadly
I kept waiting for the movie to grab me, and it just never did. I was hoping it would. I kept faith until the third act and realized, “yeah it’s not gonna happen”.
Just saw it. I liked it but definitely just a remake
The first one is my all time horror movie. I did not care for the 2nd. Too cinematic and the strangers didn't go about things how they did in the first movie. But discrediting this new one for little to no body count is wild because the first one only had 1 or 2 definitive deaths depending on if you think the boyfriend died. I'm excited to see it tomorrow though. I've heard good and bad reviews.
I promise you, they are not the same. I mentioned multiple reasons, not just the body count. The first film had a very low body count, but it was suspenseful. The terror permeated that movie. This one does not share the same attributes
My biggest worry is idk what they can do over 3 movies that keeps the strangers as strangers. Like when they were first making it they teased they would dive into what makes them do what they do and I am super against that. What made the first one terrifying was the fact you don't know these people and this could be you just by being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
@@devinheath5264 I can almost guarantee they won’t remain strangers by the end of chapter 3. They’re going to explain things. This movie lays some seeds
yea I could tell this was coming, their remaking the original except you can never come close to how good the original was, they should've just stuck with the slasher style of the prey at night
That’s what makes Prey at Night so good! It knew it couldn’t replicate the first film, and didn’t try. This one really thought it could, and it fell flat
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn I agree and prey at night has really grown on me over the years
Really like the other strangers films so I was excited for these new ones. Too bad that you were dissapointed by it. I will still see it tho
And I hope you do! And I hope you like it! Sadly, it just didn’t hit for me
I thought it was okay I don’t see all the hate it’s getting
This movie sucked
Yeah, pretty much lol
That's unfortunate... And I literally just finished Prey At Night! 😂 At least we have the first two 🤷🏻♂️
I still urge everyone to see it for themselves, but it just didn’t work for me
Well that sucks. I haven't bought the tickets yet and now I probably won't. I'll still watch it MAYBE but I'll wait till it comes to streaming. Boooooo
Also tbh when I saw the trailer I did think it looked just like the 1st one but I thought I'll give it a shot because maybe I'm wrong. 🤷Well now I know never mind...it is.
Look, I’ll never tell you to not go see it for yourself! But as a fan of the first two, this one just didn’t land well at all
Ok! You confirming it's a loose remake of the first one basically makes me have no interest in this. I was excited to hear they were making this movie but then I saw the trailer and was like, this looks like a remake...I'll check it out when it goes to streaming but I have no interest in giving it my money. I'll just watch the first one again.
And that is absolutely the right decision to make. Remember the good times, not these times lol
Loved the first two movies. This one suckeddddd. First movie I paid for in a while and I completely regret it 😂
I hope the snacks were at least good! lol
Either 1 baddie dies or everyone survives
No spoilers lol
@@TheLostRiverDriveInive not seen it just guessing due to it being limited cast and 2 more films
Neither of your assertions are correct, but, you’re not far off
I haven’t been to the movie theater once this year. There hasn’t been a movie that I gotta see. I was however, thinking maybe this is the one to see but it’s not the one. Guess I’ll have to wait for Maxxxine in July. Definitely skipping chapter 1 I just don’t care to see it especially the cost of movie tickets these days. This is a pass for me.
MaXXXine is going to be an absolute MUST on day one. But this one? Not so much
Not surprised it looked boring and cheesy from the get go, just another cash grab
And sadly, it was
Watch chapter 1 make sense after chapter 3
I’m sure it will, but that’s the downside of announcing a trilogy from the jump. You’re stringing the viewer along
So I should wait for on demand or streaming..damn that's disappointing
Believe me, I’m as disappointed as anyone. Just bummed out
As a fan of the franchise I actually give it a 10 out of 10
Holy hell. I can’t get there myself, but I’m glad it worked for you!
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn There were a bit too many homages to the original film. But contrary to what you said in your review, I'm actually glad they didn't reveal virtually anything about who they were, to me I'd rather not know and keep it mysterious
@@HurricanePatrick But that’s the thing. They’re clearly setting up things to explain them by chapter 3. And I think that is a mistake
Welp, I guess I'm skipping this one, for now at least. I was on the fence about paying to see this one, but all the negativity I'm seeing was making me push it off maybe a week or matinee, but I trust your opinion so streaming it is.
And I hope when you do get around to it, that you like it. I really do. But it just didn’t work for me
save your $
In all fairness the first 2 have bad rotten tomatoes scores and most people like those so I'd say give it a chance
@@godammichael Yeah, but both those films did fine to great with audiences. I saw Prey by Night because word of mouth was positive. I'm hearing bad things even from fans.
@@Zombie_Trooper oh.....ok...I'm gonna go see it in a few days to give my own review I'll try to keep a positive mind set.
Watched the original it put me to sleep
🤙
Do u like slumber party massacre it was very just b level funny bad movie it saw it for the first time yesterday was ok
I like the original, yeah! I didn’t care for the remake
Here's the 1st of 3 films to be disappointed with coming soon
I truly hope not lol
🤛🏼
Another “let’s reboot instead of a sequel to a loose end” bullcrap
You think Halloween Ends is a masterpiece. Does your opinion even hold merit anymore?
Damn. It’s almost like I’m an individual with my own opinion and movies resonate differently with everyone. Run along child
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn A shite opinion but an opinion nonetheless 😂
I loved it
I F hate movies with killers in. Mask neber revealed🤬anyone can make 50 movies like that
They should just stop with these reboots they're just getting worse
Couldn’t agree more…. 🤬
Every review is the same. Guess I’ll just rewatch the original again instead of going to the movie
That’s disappointing. I mean I can typically tell from a trailer if a movie is going to be bad but it’s nice to be wrong. Definitely sounds like an intentionally misbranded remake. If they didn’t have anything worthy to add to the legacy they should’ve kept it buttoned up. I’m gonna rewatch the original to remind myself why I love it.
That’s a good plan. I will say, I implore you to judge for yourself. I never want to feel like I’m swaying people one way or another. But yeah, it was definitely more of a low rent remake than anything else
@@TheLostRiverDriveInO no. I’ve talked myself into seeing too many movies I knew I’d hate. I’m going with my spidey senses from here on out.
As a HUGE movie lover/fanatic especially horror movies and aspiring actress I'm so excited to watch this movie! This was another solid movie review. ❤❤❤❤ 🎬🎥🎟️🎞️🍿🥤
Thank you so much!!
@@TheLostRiverDriveIn You're welcome I would love to see you rank this franchise. 🎬🎥🎟️🎞️🍿🥤
