    Canvasbacks are by far one of the easiest birds to decoy in my opinion.

    Man, the beginning made me remember how i got into duck hunting, let me tell you that story, i still get chills thinking about it. (Sorry, long text) i had just started hunting at 30 years old, i got introduced to it by friends during the pandemic. We were out hunting small game, but i had a waterfowl permit too because we had gone for geese a couple of weeks prior. I always told my buddies to please look on every body of water for ducks for me, so finaly after a couple of days they tell me they saw some ducks in a particular lake. So after lunch i head out to that lake with a friend. We use binoculars and find the ducks, check the map and make a plan to get close to them as they bay was nowhere near a road or trail, and we hiked 1 hour in thick forest to reach the bay. As we finaly reach close to the shore, i slowly get up a small mound close to the water, and i see 5 ducks fly away (i probably scared them). I look at them flying away on the lake, and see them turn back towards me and they dissapear behind some trees. I think to myself that there is a chance they fly in front of me, so i better be ready. I aim up between 2 trees, and wait, and wait, and the i finaly see the ducks start to appear between the branches of the trees blocking my view. Time slows (i guess that's what adrenaline will do to you) and i feel my heart pumping, i have only half a second of opportunity as they fly in front of me because i'm behind some trees, here they come, i aim, i shoot, and 1 of them drops! I hear my friend cheer behind me, and i'm just standing there shaking like a leaf hahaha, and i remember thinking "damn it, i'm going to chase that feeling for the rest of my life"
    It was a hen black duck, hit with only a single pellet in the head, and boy was she delicious. We wasted nothing of her and ate her for supper and there was something special about doing the work to get your food. Since then i have jump shot more ducks, but that first one i'll never forget. And it made for a funny storry because my friend offered to get the duck, so he stripped down to his underwear and went for a swim in a cold october lake in Canada 😂

    I have no problem decoying pintails, they're the first to show up in the spread at dawn.

      I don't even see pintails I've shot maybe 4 or 5 in my life

    I havent had much luck with bismuth....ive tried kent, hevi, and boss. Didnt pattern well and shot was soft and fragmented a lot. I switched to hevi 12 tungsten last year and it seems to work good. This slower bismuth i would think would be better with patterns and not fragmenting from powder charge going off. And I agree with Hunter way harder to decoy gadwalls in NC than mallards. They will lean into your spread but usually land 80 yards out.

    Guys, if you a cut a shell open and you see a power of 10 grains that looks just like x powder. That does not mean you can load x apparent powder.
    Manufacturers use and have access to different graders of powder.

    • @duckgunpodcast
      @duckgunpodcast  Před měsícem

      Interesting. I would wager that both Ben and Hunter know this though but I'm not sure

      I am sure they do. However, the conversation of “you can cut a shell and figure it out” always makes me nervous.
      A better example would be if I cut the shell open, “Oh, that is 11 grains of Longshot. I can duplicate this.” No, even if the manufacturer is using “Longshot,” the the manufa has access to versus what you buy at retail is not the same.
      Longshot is just a brand name anyway.
      Everyone, if handloading use pressure tested published data and use proper handloading procedures.
      There are a few places you can send shells to to be pressure tested as well.
