Placing an order as of right now! I have a Packout rolling toolbox and this has been a problem for me since day one of carrying it in the back of my pickup truck. I've been wanting to install a Tonneau cover, but I would not have enough clearance. I've considered removing the handle, cutting off a few inches, and then screwing it back in place. The problem with this, of course, is that I would then have less leverage when the handle is fully extended to roll around a fully loaded toolbox. This quick release thing is a great solution! And yes, like Vince, I'm also a firm believer in supporting small family owned businesses, especially when they offer products or services that make my life easier.
I bought a set of these pins (from amazon not neat tools) and it bent the first day I had it attached. I pulled my stack up one step that was a decorative rock type and it bent the pin. I wouldn't recommend this setup but instead drill a hole near the top of the box through the plastic and handle itself and slide a wire lock pin through it. I have used this for a couple years with no regrets. I thought this was a good idea though so I tried it.
Thanks to JakeOfAll I found an earlier version that works similar but these are nicer. I have a tonneau cover and want to carry liquids in the rolling case so laying down was a no-go option
Does anyone know why Milwaukee hasn't addressed this as of yet? It's been a complaint of myself and others for 2 years and for as innovative as Milwaukee tends to be, I'm surprised this has gone overlooked. Thanks for sharing an aftermarket fix!
Very nice review! I like the fact that you did not edit out your frustrations with getting the pins to seat properly. I’m willing to bet, that Milwaukee will incorporate a design change like this in the next GEN tool chest.
Maybe, leave the screws in. While they're set in, drill a hole 1 inch above the screw, opposed to drilling out and damaging the original hole. In doing so, the hole will match precisely and less wiggling is needed
Why would I create unnecessary holes? Then there’s gonna be 2 holes at the bottom for no reason. I don’t get why it would make a difference if the holes are already made. Your just buffering them out.

It looks like it may help to enlarge the holes in the handle as well so that the pins more easily snap into place without having to wiggle them so much.
Another youtuber showed his way of making it removable with tractor lynch pins... I drilled several different holes to adjust the handle extended for different stacks of packout.
Possible fix for wheels which break, great storage system! I recently purchased the Milwaukee Packout Rolling Tool Box. So far so good, no issues or complaints. I like the build quality and the fact that the design was very well thought out, I can store a LOT of tools safely and securely, but most importantly in a very neat and organized way. I have added packout boxes to extend the collection. The one big problem I did notice before I bought the box that a lot of buyers have complained that the wheels are the Achilles Heel of the system and can break and fail on the inner wheel hub. The issue seems to stem from the fact that the portion of the inner hub which has a tendency to break has no reinforcement to hold it rigid, there are no wheel spokes or ribs on the inner hub, and hence it is the weakest spot on the wheel. After looking at pictures of the wheels which have broken for other buyers I decided to make a modification to try to strengthen the wheel hub at its weak point. I bought 2 hose clamps, the bands on these hose clamps are 1/2 an inch wide and the inner hub is only 1/4 inch wide so it is too narrow to fit the hose clamp (by the way, the diameter of the wheel hub is 1 1/2 inches). I fixed this issue of the inner wheel hub being too narrow for the 1/2 inch wide hose clamp band by cutting the plastic ribbing on each inner wheel hub back a 1/4 inch on the inner wheel hub with a utility knife and smoothing it out flush with the rest of the inner wheel hub, which gives you a flush flat surface on the inner wheel hub which now is 1/2 an inch wide, which is wide enough to fit the hose clamp on it. You then get two 1/2 inch washers and put one on each side of the axle of the tool box, this washer is to provide enough room that the screw portion of the hose clamp (which protrudes slightly wider than the band of the hose clamp) does not hit or rub on the side of the toolbox as the wheel turns. Tighten the hose clamps as tight as they will go on the inner wheel hubs, make sure you haven't forgotten to add the 1/2 inch washer to each wheel and then reassemble the wheels to the axle using the lock nut that came stock from the factory. It's takes maybe 30 minutes to do all this work but this hose clamp should provide the strength and rigidity that the stock wheel does not have on the inner wheel hub. Hope the pictures help explain what I did. Good luck!
Great solution for handle issues, and great review as always. I wish Milwaukee would upgrade their cheap0 wheels. My Packout is less than a year old, and has a flat spot on one tire; air-up tire options would be nice. Cheers from Texas.
Great mod! Gonna get one. Pretty sure that handle convinced some knuckleheads to pop the back of my rental while I was taking a nap. They bolted and I kept my tools but I’m not taking any more chances.
I saw a video last year on these pins. When I got my Packout last spring I ordered the snap pins immediately. I use the pins weekly to remove the handle and leave the handle in the truck box. I usually line up the red boxes along the back tailgate for easy access during work hours.
Installing those quick release pins seems more hassle than what they’re worth…..I think I’ll just buy a cargo van instead and ride around with 15 rolling packouts with all the handles fully extended ! LOL

I have a similar pins system: A TIP TO HELP you alight the pins is “extended handle first”, when handle is fully extended then slide the handle down. now it’s easier to judge where the hole will be because as soon as you see the black metal part poke out below the red plastic at the bottom you’ve gone too far. with the handle collapsed it’s hard to tell because the internal black metal part slides inside the outer and sits lower (it’s hard to explain! just try it and you’ll see what i mean haha)

Good idea, but took longer to set the pin in then to just use the screw gun and take out the screws. Milwaukee should just make the telescoping handle one more layer so it can drop down more.
I know a bunch of guys that in no way would want to mess with that wiggle crap including myself there are different pins to use another guy does extremely well done video for the packout system
Having a Tonneau Cover, I'm still using the Husky Connect 26" Rolling Tool boxes with the horizontal retractable handle. Wish Milwaukee would make something similar.
I use lock pins from HD. Theyre 3 bucks a piece and are durable. I tried the threaded lock pins but ended up snaping from going up and down stairs in an apartment complex that I was trimming out
If you don’t mind, which lock pins from Home Depot did you use? These threaded lock pins won’t work for me. I have to drag my heavy Packout over stairs and curbs too. These look like they will snag and eventually break off or strip out the plastic.
@@Socalnik66 yeah they're nice at first but aren't durable at all. If you type in 1/4 inch round head wire lock pin on home depot website it will pop up. I think I got the 1/4 inch by 2 inch one
I'm a long time fan and I respect Milwaukee but after seeing this and the many issues with the wheels I'm glad I'm a dewalt guy, quick release handle and super tough wheels. Hopefully they will come out with an updated base
From my experience the dewalt latches are junk and the boxes themselves aren’t as durable. The plastic is pretty flimsy. This is what I had issue with their 1.0 and earlier boxes. The 2.0 might be better but I’m already invested as I got my first packout for Xmas 3 years ago and haven’t looked back. Few issues but nothing what I had with dewalt solutions.
I've been using the WIN717 pins for over a year now. Through snow, up and down stairs, taking the handle off twice a day. Very slight play in the thin metal of the handle. Also I didn't do a perfect install and drilled a slightly larger hole by accident. Held up well (Y)
Great solution to a problem I don't have. I have a van and I stack my Packouts to the ceiling. However I would definitely buy them if I had a pickup truck.
I found a 3D printer design page that had a lot of solutions for Packout cases, custom Dewalt/Craftsman Toughcase+ inserts and dividers. An example is bit holders that go on the underside of a packout case lid to save space. If you guys had any interest in making a video about these, I'd gladly print some out and send them your way.
Seems like the quick pins are a cool upgrade, but they didn't finish with a completely "upgraded kit" to fix the issue. The handle shaft moves side to side in the slot because it was not designed by Milwaukee to be removed. If u cut some thin pieces of foam or ABS plastic on a slight angle to stick up next to (and glue into place) the handles as a wedge to push the arms over into the correct position for the pins to line up in the holes it will help out with the ease of getting the handle put back in. Sorry to see that a dramatic way of showing how these pins can really help to solve an issue are making some think they are more trouble than they are worth 🙄 Great Solution to a Problem! 👍🏻
You could before you oversize your holes you could check I that your pin hole is lined up in the handle if not you could re drill you handle hole to make sure it’s a perfect fit
Have also seen a few different systems to make the handle removable with quick release “solutions”. Have used 1 other different solution, but wasn’t this easy to install; had to do a bit more work; so this does look like an easier install mod, which is similar to the second solution I’ve seen but haven’t ordered or tried myself. Still think funny that Milwaukee didn’t think about having a quick release handle in the first place; imo, kinda an oversight “me thinks”😊
This is my problem right now with the Dewalt Tough system 2.0, I have the big roll around 20" box but even when I release the handle, there is still about 2" of the handle holder above the top of the lid. If it didn't have those 2 inches, it would fit under my tonneau cover of my nissan frontier. Nissan has a shallow bed from 05-21. The new 2022 models have a deeper bed. And the whole reason of the tonneau cover is so I can keep my tools in the bed and not the cab especially when I have to lug them out on the weekends so I wouldn't get 2k+ worth of tools stolen.
Ah yes the Frontier shallow bed rails. Ive got a Hard working 2008 Frontier myself and the whole bed is like a tool box and my Dewalt 1.0 rolling box had to have its whole handle removed for me to fit it under my back flip tonneau cover when I had it on the truck. Kinda sucked but I personally love the shorter bed sides as access into the bed is nice and easy for Loading and unloading stuff from the side. I actually built a custom platform frame out of unistrut that is bed rail high and tied into the utilitrac and braced to the bed floor and I use the top of my bed as a flat bed for hauling all kinds of stuff and it allows the actual bed area itself to remain as a giant tool box for all my tools.
I did this with different index pins. With a file make the hole in handle more of a slot toward the wheels. The problem is the handle at the bottom will flex a bit when pushing down.
I use eyelets. Same size as the hole. A few turns out and handle comes out, a few turns in and its locked first time, every time...cost me nothing...just raided my mixed fastners jar
i just ordered the rolling tote because I couldnt get a modular storage unit under my tonneau cover. Wish i would have seen this first. The rolling tote costs almost as much as the three piece set.
I literally brought this tool box, tried to put it in the back of my truck in the parking lot and it didn’t fit with my bed cover, returned it immediately. Then rebought it the next day realizing the quick pen release solution.

Aaaallso great idea, MAYBE, possibly weld, drill, epoxy tabs while it's installed before you do anything to the box.

What about instead of a bigger hole, a horizontal slit the thickness of the the hole. would be easier to align

I found a 3D printer design page that had a lot of solutions for Packout cases, custom Dewalt/Craftsman Toughcase+ inserts and dividers. An example is bit holders that go on the underside of a packout case lid to save space. If you guys had any interest in making a video about these, I'd gladly print some out and send them your way.

If you insert the handle and then thread them in flush to handle the pins will line up and perform better bub...
I think it would be easier if you drilled out the holes in the handle just a hair. You might have a little wiggle though

Seems like the quick pins are a cool upgrade, but they didn't finish with a completely "upgraded kit" to fix the issue. The handle shaft moves side to side in the slot because it was not designed by Milwaukee to be removed. If u cut some thin pieces of foam or ABS plastic on a slight angle to stick up next to (and glue into place) the handles as a wedge to push the arms over into the correct position for the pins to line up in the holes it will help out with the ease of getting the handle put back in. Sorry to see that a dramatic way of showing how these pins can really help to solve an issue are making some think they are more trouble than they are worth 🙄 Great Solution to a Problem! 👍🏻

You could before you oversize your holes you could check I that your pin hole is lined up in the handle if not you could re drill you handle hole to make sure it’s a perfect fit

Have also seen a few different systems to make the handle removable with quick release “solutions”. Have used 1 other different solution, but wasn’t this easy to install; had to do a bit more work; so this does look like an easier install mod, which is similar to the second solution I’ve seen but haven’t ordered or tried myself.
Still think funny that Milwaukee didn’t think about having a quick release handle in the first place; imo, kinda an oversight “me thinks”😊
This should be a standard feature on this box, in my humble opinion!
My alternative would be to get a different cover for my truck. I don't have time for a quick release pin that will only work a handfull of times.

This is my problem right now with the Dewalt Tough system 2.0, I have the big roll around 20" box but even when I release the handle, there is still about 2" of the handle holder above the top of the lid. If it didn't have those 2 inches, it would fit under my tonneau cover of my nissan frontier. Nissan has a shallow bed from 05-21. The new 2022 models have a deeper bed. And the whole reason of the tonneau cover is so I can keep my tools in the bed and not the cab especially when I have to lug them out on the weekends so I wouldn't get 2k+ worth of tools stolen.

Ah yes the Frontier shallow bed rails. Ive got a Hard working 2008 Frontier myself and the whole bed is like a tool box and my Dewalt 1.0 rolling box had to have its whole handle removed for me to fit it under my back flip tonneau cover when I had it on the truck. Kinda sucked but I personally love the shorter bed sides as access into the bed is nice and easy for Loading and unloading stuff from the side. I actually built a custom platform frame out of unistrut that is bed rail high and tied into the utilitrac and braced to the bed floor and I use the top of my bed as a flat bed for hauling all kinds of stuff and it allows the actual bed area itself to remain as a giant tool box for all my tools.

I got the Toughbuilt XXL widemouth rolling bag. I don't have to worry about my handle being too tall.
I did this with different index pins. With a file make the hole in handle more of a slot toward the wheels. The problem is the handle at the bottom will flex a bit when pushing down.
That shop rag was real nass like.

I use eyelets. Same size as the hole. A few turns out and handle comes out, a few turns in and its locked first time, every time...cost me nothing...just raided my mixed fastners jar
i just ordered the rolling tote because I couldnt get a modular storage unit under my tonneau cover. Wish i would have seen this first. The rolling tote costs almost as much as the three piece set.
*This is great but Milwaukee should solve the wheel mount shroud breakage problem with some metal reinforcement.*

I literally brought this tool box, tried to put it in the back of my truck in the parking lot and it didn’t fit with my bed cover, returned it immediately. Then rebought it the next day realizing the quick pen release solution.

neat pins but I do not use in transit so I am good with factory position, but I can see where it becomes an issue
