#Nintendo #VirtualBoy #DidYouKnowGaming - Hry
"The late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata"
"Then president of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime"
Now I feel a little sad.
@Kev Walthall what the fuck
@Kev Walthall hey I think it was a joke
@Kev Walthall judging your reaction, I think you were part of a the Yakuza who kill him...
@Kev Walthall I ain't gonna argue with no little kid. Go to bed
@Kev Walthall oh no I'm so scared. You're going to hurt me.
"Uh no I didn't fall asleep during your presentation I was uh, silently voicing my approval. Yeah that's it."
*Virtual Boy*
Yamauchi: I'm sleep
Yamauchi in reality: Real shit!?
You thought that too huh?
Apparently in japanese work culture its a normal occurrence that the boss falls asleep in meetings if the topic is not of high importance/he trusts his employees.
I heard Iwata fell asleep during the Wii U's presentation.
Jude Law that’s prob why they both failed so badly. Mismanaged to hell
this is basically an episode of Oddware.
Agreed
And I am thankful for it!
Do you Know Oddware
If he didn't say "Did you know...?" at the beginning of the video I would have sworn I woke up in the middle of an oddware episode
7:01 Poor Steve became Dr. Peli in the text. LOL!
I was just about to post the same thing, Eli Peli appeared twice in name.
It's a cool name though....
I'd say I'm here for LGR, but it's DYKG, so it's the perfect match!
*Virtual Boy in the corner crying about its failures*
*Wii U shows up behind patting its back*
"It's ok man, I know how you feel..."
at least the Wii U had amazing games
*GameCube shows up*
It's not all bad.
Some of the Virtual Boy games weren't bad game play wise. They were just released on a system where 3D technology wasn't perfected and had unfortunate side-effects when not used responsibly.
@@TheKeitaNobodyAskedFor Are implying that the Virtual Boy's flagship title "Golf" wasn't a classic?
according to fanboys Virtual Boy outsold Wii U, so you know that's true information!
*giving presentation * Uh... is Mr Yamauchi asleep?
Nintendo execs- " no no thats good! He likes it so much, he doesnt need to see any more!" 🤣🤣🤣
*giving presentation * Uh... is Mr Yamauchi asleep?
Nintendo execs- "YES! This is our chance to do everything we want!"
The sleeping boss thing really made me laugh. Over here it's seen as a "I'm not interested" thing, but in most Japanese media I've seen, it more a "I'm already sold, I don't need to see anymore" thing.
Having those Wario Land and Teleroboxer games trapped in the Virtual Boy is a crime.
The black and white emulation is nice honestly most of the games on the console were pretty good (especially if you use the black and white display)
As a VirtualBoy owner, I can say it's very sad there's a great deal of misinformation about it, even now. People _still_ think it causes headaches and damages eyesight and all that crap.
The Virtual Boy actually when properly calibrated, has a brilliantly vivid display and is a ton of fun to use.
I can see the back problems being legit if you don't set up a good height for the headset.
The virtual boy was simply way too ahead of it's time. VR was not well understood at the time and the technology was expensive (forcing the monochrome red) and very primitive.
“Then-president of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils Aime”
Oh god, I was not ready for that.
LGR and Virtual Reality.
Two things I thumbs up without thinking.
you would make a great banker
I immediately hit the thumbs up as well
The Virtual Boy may have failed, but you've got to appreciate Nintendo's dedication to making sure the system was as safe as possible.
Ohhhh bonus LGR video this week!!!
LGR in DYKG? hell yeah.
Nice! So happy to finally see Clint from LGR!
He's in a couple of others too :)
I feel like this was originally going to be an LGR Tech Tale on his channel.
Oh, wow. You guys used some of the footage from my videos. Well, thank you for the credit!
Love DYKG and love LGR great crossover. Thanks Clint! ♡
Wait this ain't April fools, this is dyk virtual boy. The video I never thought would get made
neo geo pocket color next
I've heard the Wario game on that thing is actually really good, a shame they never remade it in full color for a later handheld.
Cough3DScough!
It actually is!! I used to play it as a kid and then as a teen and it was awesome!! I hope they remake it
"Too focused on flashy graphics and catering to a hardcore audience"
The more things change, the more they stay the same eh?
Yep
eh?
*Virtual boy fails*
A few years later
*Nintendo Switch comes out*
Nintendo: Let's do vr
Shigeru Miyamoto: Ah shit, here we go again
I remember the AVGN's review of the Virtual Boy. Classic episode.
Awwww yeah
"Water world... on VIRTUAL BOY! It's like puking on a pile of shit!"
He gave it a really bad shake, whereas here the script is informative, fair, and even-handed
I had a friend who had a Virtual Boy back in the day. I remember TeleroBoxer being pretty fun to play.
I think they should give the virtual boy another shot seeing how far VR tech has come ever since. Sure, they released the Switch VR add-on, but that’s a rather limited approach that still doesn’t fully embrace all of VR’s features compared to a proper headset.
Throw in a refined power glove that actually works and we’ll have something going on here.
I like Miyamoto’s point about its success as a toy, I never really thought about it that way. I know that wasn’t the plan to have the virtual boy be a toy, but it’s a good spin
I rented the Virtual Boy from Blockbuster once and liked the red display.
The switch needs virtual boy games on the eshop
Compatible with Labo VR of course.
Or on the Online app! Ya know... fo free.
Nah, 3ds
"Who needs vision anyway?" - Scott Wozniak
DUDE!!! DUUUDE!! Thanks for narrating this for us!! Always nice to hear you! Great Video!
I love the VB. Got one last year and it's actually quite immersive. Not that it feels like you're living in true VR, but rather in the unique world of the Virtual Boy. Had it not been for the limited color palette, I doubt VB would feel as unique as it does.
Nice to hear you here, LGR! I found one of these around six years ago at a local thrift for $2.92. Had everything including a copy of Galactic Pinball but missing the padded eye covers.
It worked fine but after awhile the graphics went out. I read that it has to do with the ribbons that attach to the mirrors detach over time, and it's just waiting until I get the time to work on it. It's a fun system in short bursts. Any longer and I fear my eyes would bug out :)
Great video, LGR! I truly loved my Virtual Boy. I still have it but it doesn't display properly anymore.
That outro song was from Mario tennis on the VB AND I LOVE IT. I used to just sit and listen to that song when I was a kid.
I love LGR!!!!! He is so excited and personal yet so chill, knowledgeable, and professional. I could listen to him talk about anything for hours.
Whoa there wasn't a 3 minute ad at the start of this video?? Weird
shnifin I thought something was wrong
LGR should become the standard narrator for this channel, this was sooo much better than usual!
Didn't read the full title. Was surprised LGR did the narrating. Awesome!
I like the way Nintendo figured out why they failed and used that knowledge to improve their future developments. They don't just give up on something, they wait, learn and try again.
[Waves]
"Greetings, and welcome to a Did You Know Gaming Thing."
Awesome episode!
great video I'm very happy to hear that the Virtual Boy didn't actually tarnish Gunpei Yukoi reputation at Nintendo cause that never sat well with me especially after all the successes he had prior
Did You Know ?
Jack Bros was the very first Shin Megami Tensei game released in America, It stars Jack Frost a popular monster from the Shin Megami Tensei games. Its also the other best game from the Virtual Boy behind Wario Land VB
Isn't Jack Frost in persona too?
@@94unclechuck yeah he is, Persona is apart of the Shin Megami Tensei series
@@JoeyJ0J0 yeah, I knew that. I just wanted to iterate that persona and megaten are in the same franchise but no one knows what megaten is
I made a whole video about jack bros trivia 👌🏿
This new episode of Tech Tales is great!
I got an Occulus Quest ad during this video. Fitting.
Did you know that in Nintendo Labo's Discover mode, there are 3 characters Prof. Riggs, Plaise Allatyme, and Lerna Lotte, who each have their own personality and backstories that can be revealed if the player chooses certain dialog choices to have the characters go off on a tangent? The Trio are the reason Discover Mode is my favorite part of any Nintendo Labo kit.
Oooh LGR! I love this dude's channel so much!
Watching this while playing Luigi's Mansion 3, guess they're still putting that virtual boy in games as neat little things.
I played a ton of Virtual Boy when I was a kid. When my mom bought it for me, it was just $30. My favorite games were Wario Land and Panic Bomber, though I also played quite a bit of Mario's Tennis and Red Alarm.
I remember using those early yellow and black VR headsets in our mall in the 90’s, but I don’t remember them being so goddamned HUGE.
0:20 "Allen Becker" sounds a lot like "Alan Becker". Just imagine a not-even-born baby working away animating small things on a tiny red display.
All of the Mario Tennis VB music still holds up!
LGR in a DYKG video?, hell yeah!
Nice! Lots of little tidbits I didn't know before.
It’s quite s shame that the 3DS never got any Virtual Boy games in its Virtual Console lineup. Heck it’s even more of a shame that Virtual Boy Wario Land never got remade for that console.
Good point! You;d think they would do that, it's not like the red should stop them since there are already green-ass game boy games on the estore
The Nintendo Life CZcams channel actually released some side-by-side video of Wario Land, which can be viewed in 3D using the 3DS internet browser
With how often Nintendo was remaking games during the end of the 3DS's life span I'm surprised this never happened.
I think they could have included it all in a single cartridge. Maybe make it a 100 dollar special addition in October 2015. 20 years after the launch of the virtual boy.
Got to play one of these on display at Electronics Boutique on release. It was neat. But tiring to play for any normal length of time. Plus it did sorta mess with your vision and you’d notice when you looked around the real world after playing. Still. I still kinda kick myself for for grabbing one when they were practically giving them away. It’s a neat novelty now.
I had one of these and wish I still did just for nostalgia. Nothing like trying to find a comfortable way to play it. Best way was to lay down and balance the thing on your face.
*Sees LGR*
Ah, so you are also a man of taste.
Hey Clint, I know you from your channel...!
Finally, someone who I actually *DO* know on Did You Know Gaming.
You know how it goes: You feature LGR on your channel - I subscribe
My favorite channel on DYKG!
My favorite thing is that you plug the DYKG Red video after the Virtual Boy video because of the VB's screen display
That explanation of the Virtual Boy being a toy makes complete sense, hence the LABO VR kit
Yay, a technical Saturday release of LGR!!!
I remembered when the commercial of this was aired on tv. Just seeing that kid trying to run away from the Virtual Boy used to give me nightmare fuels.
I love how I trust you to make the decision without my supervision was conveyed through sleeping. I can't put my finger on it but there's something really cool about that.
These videos are great for falling asleep
Love when you guys have LGR, Clint is the best.
There's also a badge in a Hat in Time that applies a virtual boy filter, added in the nyakuza dlc.
Gunpei Yokoi, one of the most impactful members from Nintendo not many talk about.
Another thing that crippled it was the fact that people were too lazy to adjust it properly before playing.
I brought mine to gatherings in the past and made sure to tell everyone who played how to make adjustments properly and they all loved it. Also I had an AC adapter which helped I guess.
It also made an appearance in Super Smash Bros for the Wii U on a shelf under the TV from the Wario Ware stage.
I had one of these as a kid and my brothers and i found we could avoid the back pain problem by just laying on our back and having the virtual boy sit on our face. It actually balanced that way pretty well, but man that eye strain....30ish minutes and you take it off and you feel super dizzy lol. Not to mention your eyes adjust to darkness.
I loved my Virtual Boy growing up. To this day I still think it had some of the best pinball tables in any game. Tennis was fun. Can't stand golf in any form but played it all the time on the VB.
The absence of Virtual Boy games on the 3DS's Virtual Console was a huge missed opportunity IMO
Did you know: an actual video without a 2 minute ad
Virtual boy also appeared in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga DX, It was a nice touch i must say
DYKG + LGR = Perfection
I love LGR narration!
Please make a Did You Know Gaming video about Baldur's Gate! Or D&D videogames
That reminded me that some of Virtual Boy game had such great animations, like Teleroboxer :O
(at least watching Jeremy Parish retrospective)
Stuart Ashens and LGRs Clint within 2 weeks of eachother?
Dide you are killing it with these guests.
the virtual boy also makes a cameo in No More Heroes for the Wii,one of the bosses, uses a Virtual Boy as a visor during a cutscene
I was diagnosed with chronic migraines in the 3rd grade, have headaches every other day and least 2 severe migraines a month. My older brother had the Virtual boy and 6 games. This was the only thing he wouldn't let me touch due to being prone to migraines. I havent seen a virtual boy first hand outside of him. It's so odd and quirky.
7:01
Lads that says Eli Peli not Steve Wota
"then-president reggie fils-aime"
that is such a painful reminder.
Finn the Meme Yeah shame on you Reggie!
@@Mario87456 its not reggies fault he had been working at nintendo for a long time and wanted to retire. i was just pointing out that it was sad that he left.
Finn the Meme well he should have waited until he was in his 60s because that was dumb of him to retire in his forties
@@Mario87456 reggie is 58. did you think he was in his forties?
Finn the Meme I see still he could have waited a few more years until he was 65 the age most people retire at. Also I feel so stupid now he doesn't even look like someone in his 50s dammit I should have checked his Wikipedia article a long time ago.
A collab that should have happened long ago. I approve 💛
I love my Virtual Boy, not even lying.
Could have invited AVGN for this episode. Maybe a Did you know about LJN episode.
I'm still waiting for them to bring in ClementJ642, but only a few people here know who that is.
Hearing LGR on here was great!
I wish "silently voicing my approval" would have been an acceptable excuse for sleeping through class back in school
My Virtual Boy still works, and I love it to pieces
I wouldn't be surprised if there are any prototype PAL Virtual Boy consoles out in the wild. (5:53)
Luigi's Mansion 3, which was released after this video, also features a device called the Virtual Boo which has the same function as the gameboy horror and dual scream. When E Gadd gives the Virtual Boo to Luigi, he mentions how once he finishes the marketing materials it will surely fly off the shelfs.
a DYKG with LGR....Nice
AWESOME LGR did this, you RULE dude!!!
The end card thing is about Red... I get it
😂 I just clicked on this video so I had something to listen to as I did house work and got really confused when I heard LGR. I thought I clicked on the wrong video.
I think there is a mistake with the caption of the person at 7:02, referencing an earlier person, rather than the person being discussed. Still a wonderful video!
