"are you a moper?" I can't see why they would kill off such a compelling character in Season 1

My wife, friends and I just finished season 1 and I must say it was really good and brilliant, on top of it you get to learn more about the insane politics in foreign relations. The series was funny, dramatic and thrilling. Also, Rufus Sewell as Ambassador Hal Wyler is our favorite character, we love the chemistry between his character and Keri’s as the main role, it is bold and cute which is humorous and enjoyable to watch which I think makes the series even better. Rufus’ such a charismatic great actor and is perfect for the mysterious politician character of Hal. I hope he stays up until the coming season. Overall tho, we loved it 💯

Great show, one of the best of 2023 so far for me. As a UK ex-pat Aussie and having worked for the UK Government for over 2 decades before emigrating, I think the production has nailed the tone of the inner workings of the Foreign Office very well (there's a lot more paperwork involved in real life!). Can't comment on US politics and Government machinations, but they've done a great job of weaving real-life events (Brexit, Trump presidency) into the story without it detracting from the drama. Both Kerri Russell and Rufus Sewell are 2 actors that I will always watch whatever they are in, and to have them together on screen is a gift; their relationship is familiar to those who have been married/together a long time, yet dramatised so well for the story arc to have me both laughing out loud, empathising and being annoyed by both characters' traits frequently. Not finished the series yet, but loving it so far. Hope there's going to be a second season.

Joined up writing, grown up thinking. What an amazing series! Thoroughly enjoyed it, hated to get to the end. Such clever script with just enough wickedly dry sense of humour to lighten the load just when the diplomatic lines were blurred. Absolutely loved Ronnie, hope she gets more exposure in series 2. Fresh, smart, clever, not boorish, but with twists and turns you really cannot second guess. Fantastically written and produced and executed with flair and fascination by all actors. Hal, well......swoon! Really recommend it, better than Treason, in my opinion. Go watch.

I just started watching this series and I'm already hooked. It is a stylized thriller with it's "feet on the ground". Kerri Russell, whom I have loved since 'The Americans', plays a newly minted ambassador heading to Kabul to do "substantiative work" repairing the atrocities committed on the women of the country and to try to make the 28,000 lives lost during the rebuilding worth it. As she's hectically getting ready for her flight to Kabul, a BRN ship is attacked with explosives, killing 28 people. Suddenly, Russell is ordered by the President to be the ambassador to Britain during this "sad and crucial time", and to be, as Russell's character puts it a "glorified emotional support dog" who will look sad at photo opps at funerals. This is a thriller a'la the original PBS Thursday night 'Mystery' series, (music included), but much more serious, of course. It is worthy of 'Mansfield Park', with all the pomp and circumstance of that movie, much to the annoyance and disdain of Russell's character. There is wry humor, as in a scene when Russell is hectically getting ready to catch her flight to Britain. She makes her husband, Rufus Sewell, do a "smell test" on her underarms. But he takes it further on down, burying his face in her crotch and sniffing tentatively. Russell's character draws back, horrified, and says "oh God. Is it bad?" He pulls her closer, and says "No. It's perfect", and Rusell pushes him away in annoyance. It has humorous and compelling moments by turns and is extremely "watchable". If you liked 'The Americans' and 'Mansfield Park', this should be your next "favorite series".

It's hard to imagine how the same Network can air something as horrendous as Florida Man and something as brilliant as The Diplomat in the same month.
This mash up of Homeland and The West Wing works because of great writing and outstanding. every character is interesting and feels like a professional in their job. Kerri Russel and Rufus Sewell are outstanding and they have a complicated relationship that is very believable.
But the supporting cast is great too. Michael McKean plays a Biden like president with humor and a quiet ferocity. Ato Essandoh as the Deputy Ambassador is funny, intense and very believable as the political careerist tired of running campaigns. Ali Ahn is outstanding as the funny, subtle CIA head of station( I wanto to see a show about HER).
It does have one of those convoluted plots involving an attack on a british Navy ship that may or may not have been done by Iran. It's twisty enough with plenty of big speeches that I'm not always sure I understand what's going on, but I expect that from a show like this.
If you're looking for your next prestige show to bing, this is it.

Exciting and intriguing. I love the main story and the sub stories. I love that the show can be ridiculous and funny. If you take it too seriously, it definitely has elements of abuse (both emotional abuse brought on by the husband and physical abuse brought on by the wife) which you can easily overlook as part of the charm and humor of the show. However, I do think the whole point of sneaking in such appalling behavior is to make us think about what are the norms we have come to accept, such as politicians who refuse to speak directly for fear of breaking alliances with others. Each episode invites new problems to solve. I think that Kate's character is really evolving with true growth albeit perhaps a little too fast (given the timeline of the show). Quality show worth your time.

The show is actually good it has great acting in the male and female parts some old favorites and a lot of newcomers. The directing was good also by Keri Russell. The storyline was easy simple to follow, yet I would have wanted maybe a little bit more action in the story it seemed to drag on a bit, possibly trying to secure another season. I would have liked more to be done within this season. I watched it in a couple of days but it wasn't something that I would readily recommend unless/until there was more action within the storyline, nothing ever really got done within the season. The main character always looked frazzled and was quite dramatic, when she could have taken the opportunity to truly highlight women in higher office in a much better stronger light. The intimacy scenes were also a bit dry. All in all I gave it 3 stars because there was real thought put into the show, the acting was good, and the foreign affair stories were fun to hear. I do hope it gets picked up a second season. And ties it all in. Then I'll definitely recommend.

Enjoyed The Diplomat series up until episode 5. Don't have experience or knowledge of behind the scenes, high level, high stakes, international diplomacy, but it appeared believable and creditable until...episode 5.
I may know nothin about being an ambassador, but I sure as hell know enough about native American songbirds, especially Purple Martins to know Purple Martins DO NOT EXIST outside the USA.
Nonetheless, I loved the misinformation plug about our beloved purple martins as we have lost about 1/3 of their population in the last 50 yrs. Yeah, a bit ironic as the show is about establishing creditable and trust and the work, research, and carefully chosen words, optics required to gain trust. Come on people, how could you mess up that? Made me rethink my previous good opinion.

Really? That is where you draw the line? They do exist outside the USA, but they are only found in the Americas North and South . . . you are correct they are not found in the UK

There are two reasons why I love The Diplomat:
    1. My wife loves Keri Russell and the show so it's a good time for us to spend together in the evenings.
    2. The show always puts me to sleep. I mean it never fails. It's so boring, mundane, and breathless of any life that I can always count on it to start snoozing.
There are 8 episodes and each one has provided me the trigger I need for a good night's sleep. I mean how could it not: A bland premise of a career diplomat assuming she's going into a supposed action-filled Kabul when she is redirected and appointed as ambassador to the UK all while trying to juggle her failed marriage and an unknown future; characters who speak in the same monotone voice trying to create suspense about things which don't concern them (the Naval carrier in the first episode was British. Why is the US trying so hard to get involved?) So much talking--like mountains of banter that doesn't really produce anything. And then there is the walking. People just walk on the show from one room to the next, from one place to another. But like any boring show, they simply start talking again. It's fantastic.
The Diplomat is tailor-made for middle-aged women who dream about the 'what-if-I had' a career full of discreetness, clandestine operations, lavish parties, and fragmented relationships.
As a man, I love it. If you're not a fan of alcohol, melatonin, or some other downer to get you to bed, I'd recommend The Diplomat. I can’t give if 5 stars because every few minutes some background music gets played which startles me and I wake up. But for the most part, I'm so at peace in sleep from this show.

I got as far as episode 6 hoping it would improve but I find it to be a disaster. I think the actors do their best with an atrocious script. It certainly ticks the diversity box for casting and I’d love to know the what the budget was. Nothing is cheap to produce but something tells me that the budget on this wasn’t generous and if it was, then it was wasted. Two superb actors manage to fail in their characters. Rufus Sewell and Rory Kinnear. Another of my gripes is the attempt at fast and sharp one liners which do not work becoming too cliche and quite frankly boring. However the biggest flaw among many is the openly hostile attack towards Russia. If I was prepared to watch to the end this could well be different but given the stupendous lies being told by the British and American governments over the situation in Ukraine and the desperate attempt to replace President Putin with a more malleable leader as a US puppet, I wouldn’t be surprised if funding for this series came from MI6 and the CIA. Or was it the Russians? Obviously I’m in the minority here as it seems popular but people are very easily satisfied with mediocrity.

Ep 2 The actress will over do it saying the most disgusting slang followed by the name of Christ. Why do some people only use Jesus' name in vain, not someone else's? I've never heard anyone using the name of Adam, Moses, Buddha, Muhammad, etc., in vain?
Because Satan has nothing really to gain by mocking other false gods or false prophets. He also works against his own camp by slandering his own lies. So these silly shows may intentionally contain these foul scenes that stick.
Additionally, he has something to gain by defaming the name of Jesus and minimizing its glory and admiration with a culture. This way, even if people know of Jesus they don’t know who the real Jesus is, or hold His name with the esteem that it actually deserves.
Demons are cast out of people by the name of Jesus. By his power and authority alone, we, myself included, do it. But that same name is also used as an expletive in probably every city and people mock it and equate Him with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. It really is a shame.
And because Satan is very crafty he has influenced the entire culture to jump on this bandwagon. He controls Netflix and others with influence to control everyone else. People have been influenced by demons to start and continue a highly blasphemous practice and to think nothing of it.
And this show tries to hard to be clever

UGH. Worst cast, not believable, zero credibility, biggest waste of one hour. Terrible writing, acting, and baffled at how anyone could give this more than 1 star. Keri Russell as an Ambassador is as likely as Joe Biden is to be fit for President, and she does as good of a job here as he has. It's a complete jaw dropping event due to the most unlikely and often comedic attempt to bring believability to a poorly acted script by someone grossly ill equipped to even be in the role. Additionally but not the least turn off is the intense foul language and mocking of Jesus Christ. The writers are overtly filled with hatred for Jesus and their inability to write anything of substance or clever subtlety is nonexistent.
