He really, I feel he was judged to harshly early on. He's only young, especially concerned the actors who play Amy and Denzel are 17/18 so likely have more experience.

Also I feel the writers are giving him more opportunity to show his talent, because the others have had serious storylines and he's been more of a comedy character. But recently he has had some more serious scenes and it's been a chance for him to show what he can do.
