Thanks for all the congratulations for the anticipated arrival of our baby boy! And for the ideas about our galley design. Too many comments to respond to everyone this week, but we do read them all! -Matt+Janni
More congratulations here! Raising a dog or cat first is a good primer or test for becoming parents since if its too overwhelming to care for LePaz then you'll have even more difficulty raising a child. Now you'll both be viewing safety a little more critically especially on deck where netting and such will be needed to better constrain a child behind the lifelines. You will likely have at least a toddler running around by the time Duracell is ready for the water so you need to start planing now based on what timeline you'll be in you sons development when Duracell splashes.
You may enjoy reviewing the StarTrek Enterprise episode of when Engineer Commander Tucker gets pregnant to get a somewhat humorous look at how perspectives can change while carrying a child.
Best!
I love watching this Matt and Janni. Thank you for salvaging and restoring and renovating the Duracell racer with such beautiful sailing lines. Actually if you look at the Imoca 60's and how they shape their headsails it's exactly the same beautiful shape as when Duracell was a racer which just goes to show how exquisitely well her sails were shaped back in the day.
I wish you guys the very best I’m so happy for y’all i remember how exciting it is especially your first one love your content and the iconic boat I’m so happy to see you save that boat keep it going we’ll be watchin from the high n dry southern plains of Oklahoma oh and I’m sorry for the price of beef blame our boy Biden on that one stock up now while you can afford to
Whoa! Congratulations! Getting married changes your life. Becoming a parent changes your World!
Congratulations on the baby. RAN sailing is a testimony to the fact that you can do a “boat” channel and not only sail but also do a build with a baby. Good luck with everything.
Yes they are!
I enjoy Project Atticus and they are sailing with their precious baby girl too.
Sailing Nahoa has two little kids and they’re up for their second circumnavigation.
Congratulations! A child will bring joy, laughter and a new outlook to everything in your lives .
You are a great team. Not only do you know what you're doing when building a boat, it's really fun to watch the two of you on CZcams. I'm happy for you, for the baby - you have recognized the meaning of life in every respect.
Congrats! Lucky Child, two great parents and a very thorough inspector!
We are all thrilled over the news, you'll make exceptional parents, we all are so Happy for you both,
Thank you😊
And you two probably thought the boat was a big project. Congrats your entire world will soon revolve around your son including your boat project.
There is nothing more satisfying than welcoming a new first mate.
Congrats on the future family addition! I've got a couple of boys myself. We just returned from the only open body of water in Park City, UT, sailing their remote control sailboats. As for the boat, I'd scrap the bar. Especially with a little kid running through the boat, it's a great place to hit a head and it will also cut down on easy walking through the boat.
Congratulations 🎉 - what great news - it's fantastic that the little crew is getting bigger - the perfect boat, the perfect galley for a perfect family - I'm so happy for you.
Cheers Phil from Germany
Matt & Yanni - first off, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Becoming a dad was the best, most-rewarding thing I have ever done!
Now onto other things: I love the new galley layout, but I would suggest you think about swapping the position of the dishwasher & sink relative to each other. (In other words, move the sink more forward and move the dishwasher aft). This will give you a tighter triangle between the sink-stove-fridge, and it means that as the chef stands mid-galley, in front of the fridge, s/he has far less to reach for the sink (which is critical), but also has everything needed for meal prep immediately to hand. Also, this subtle shift will allow both the fridge & the dishwasher to be opened simultaneously. Don't discount this need -there is nothing more frustrating in a tight space than having to wait for one appliance simply to access another.
Matt
In my humble opinion you should axe the bar and expand the galley. That is one tight galley! You don't have to be completely wedged in like a sardine you just have to know that you won't be thrown to the other side of the boat! You must also consider comfort at anchor where more floor area will make for a happy cook. Congrats on the pregnancy.
The best galley I have seen was in Pelagic Australis. I love a Herreschoff interior, but I love the functionality of a stainless steel galley with tall fiddles and stainless work surfaces and back splashes. Hot pans are not a problem, and heavy duty cleaning won’t damage them. Congratulations. I wish you all the very best.😊
Love the new layout and it looks like it will be safer for everyone. While I like the bar setup, it looks like it will cut down on the aisle space for walking and/or passng someone. I guess I need to see the entire layout to understand the amount of space required and I do understand that smaller aisles are better for when you are in rough sailing situations. Congrats to the both of you on the baby boy. He will be a great addition to the crew.
The bar design does not make it easy to put something on the counter top if you have to reach over it. There’s not much room to put a plate either compared to having a wider benchtop where you can put your elbows, drink, plate and still talk to the cook.
I like the idea below about a space for a second freezer - not necessarily in the galley area - for those long periods away from civilization. Also the comments on 86'ing the tall bar - or make it hinge down. Perhaps a raised, narrow counter overhanging the work surface between the galley and the dining/settee area for the cook to place items on their way to/from the table. Also, you might consider placing the refrigerator where it's more easily accessed without disturbing the cook - for those beers and snacks.
First of all, congrats to the blessing of a baby, hope he'll watch (t)his family journey on building his soon to be favourite place🥰.
My "strong" suggestions as you said we'd should give now is to have more fridge and freezer space, even if not in the galley. For two or three people, the space you have planned is only for weekend trips. If you plan on sailing more it will soon be a problem.
Another suggestion is to (even if you don't plan to install it now) leave space for air conditioning installation. People overlook and often forget that the main discomfort in a boat is humidity and AC units are also very efficient on dehumidifying, apart from the comfort of temperature regulation and creating (forced) airflow.
Congratulations! Great news. Your baby is so lucky to have two wonderful parents like you guys. Best of everything to all of you going forward with your lives.
I'm happy to hear you are going to continue with the utube channel.
Being a father of three daughters and wishing I'd taken a lot more pictures of my daughters growing up I think this channel will be a wonderful tool to allow you to document the boat build and then your travels but it will also give you the opportunity to include your child or children so when you get as old as I am you can go back and relive all the memories you made before it was time to slow down and stop sailing the world. Congratulations on the upcoming addition to your family. Being a parent is going to be the absolute best part of your lives. God bless you both ,stay safe enjoy your pregnancy, it's going to be wonderful.
Thanks! We are excited
Layout consideration:
what about flipping the galley and seating. Have the seating when you first come down so when your sitting your looking out the back of the boat or towards galley instead of only facing towards the bedroom or galley.
People tend to gravitate to kitchen to hang out and stand while cooking. Current design would block walkway between the two seating areas.
Just a thought, you probably have a reason.
Congratulation on your pregnancy
Love your channel, great work!
Congratulations on the 'crew' addition guys. You will make great parents, as you both have a lot of patience.
Wow, that wasn’t even on my radar, completely out of the blue, like holy cow, you’re having a baby, dang, I’m so happy for you two!
Congratulations, children are a blessing. He’ll have a wonderful life on board. Somewhat jealous, lol!
*The bar area will be very important to have for mama and child for many years to accommodate your child to eat or color while mama is the galley* which will be a lot…unless the father can care for the child three times a day everyday. Consider also extending the bar overhang over the counter top for more practical space. Also, you may want to consider adding a builtin pullout stool for the child at the END of counter for you won’t have to move and replace (and walk around) a cumbersome stool everyday. This is the first time I’ve viewed your channel so I may be wrong but it looks like your dining table will not be directly accessible from the galley without walking around away from the galley so I’d consider the bar vital as a mother and child will spend much time together when she cooks and cleans everyday. Congratulations to you both…what a wonderful life your child will have!
Congratulations on your baby boy!!! What a wonderful piece of news! And, as far as the galley, the only thing I'd suggest is that the bar plank would fold down, so the passageway would be facilitated when drinking activities weren't taking place.
Perhaps make the bar a fold down leaf, then the passage way is wider when underway at sea
Congrats on the pregnancy... being a parent is the most rewarding job in the whole world, bar none! Next episode needs to feature where the nursery will go. :)
Like the galley design. Big Congratulations on your pending parenthood. Children have a way of maturing us, I'm sure you will be great parents.
Great news! Ironic that the boat takes so long but the incredibly complex child takes less time :)
Congratulations, Mom and Dad! As for the kitchen layout, ultimately, Yanni has to give her final stamp of approval.
Congratulations! Being a parent is an amazing and wonderful experience.
Congrats on your baby boy. The adventure really begins now!!!
Congrats. Sailing Melody and Sailing Nahoa both show how you can operate at sea with babies on board. Grow your own crew, what a concept.
Congrats on the baby human in the make. So good to have a second inspector too.
Amazing news on the baby. Don't feel any guilt about possible changes to the channel in the future. All of your fans love the human side of the channel, not just the boaty stuff. Baby will need to get his/her inspector licence sorted ASAP.
The inspector will have a human baby assistant!
Great that you haven't forgotten to organize for future crew. I'm sure he'll do his mom and dad proud.
After 22 years in the race car industry and 10 in making kitchens the best thing I did on my Dufour 365 was to make the gimballed cooker surround in thin stainless sheet. On the bottom front edge( when looking at the space) I put a lip of about 30 mm. This stops any liquids/oils/food etc that spill down the back of the stove from running onto the sole creating a slippery problem. We also use it to store a couple of frying pans as the lip stops them sliding out and the stove still gimbals.
Couldn't find marine 316l stainless in cheap 1.2 or 1.5mm thick sheet so used 304 grade.
4 years and it's still good as new.
As my wife is french good food at sea is a priority!
Bon appetit !
Congratulations on the crew-expansion! 'The show must go on' I understand why you say that, but never feel pressured by it. I think the audience you have are on the mature side, and most of us already know how demanding a kid or kids can be ;). We don't go anywhere (at least I won't) if you take a break here or there. All the best, hope everything progresses as expected healthwise!
I laughed so hard when you said "crew". A very good friend of mine sent me a picture of him, in a lounge chair, drinking a beer while his eldest son was mowing the lawn. "I've waited 13 years for this." is what he said. Congratulations, you two.
Congrats on the baby. I'm a long-term viewer of your channel but not a sailor. We recently remodeled our kitchen and one of the big changes was removing the split level or "bar" on our kitchen island. From my perspective and that of many of my friends, the bar was a trend in home construction about 20 years ago. Many of us are removing it so that the countertop is all on a single plane. It actually makes the usable space larger and looks better. So my suggestion is that you would be better off by leaving the countertop at all one level.
Congratulations on your great news. I don't believe for a second that little will change on the change on the channel, but any changes will only enhance our view of your lives! I am very happy for you both (all)!😀
Hey guys, brilliant news, you will be wonderful parents.
Well, two inspectors are better than one, welcome to your new crew member. Take and enjoy the time while your baby is so young. That time is so fast gone and never comes back. Fair winds and following seas for all of you from the winter in good old Germany.
Congratulations on the impending birth of your baby boy. I’m sure your parents are also very excited and will be great support and coaches in the months and years ahead.
Congratulations on joining the "Grow your own crew" community.
Congratulations!
This moves from a boat project to a life project!
The bar, why not have the counter space extend under the bar area and the bar shelf reversed over the galley counter space? Double duty!
As I am watching this you likely have it built already! LOL
Congratulations! You'll be great parents. The most important thing is that you don't let it get in the way of me getting my videos every week :)
Haha! We won’t 😊 you might just see a baby strapped to Matt from time to time
The news that you are starting a family made my day. With declining birth rates I hope you guys have 6 or so. You guys are the real deal. Learning so much along the way also. Excellent channel.
Massive congratulations guys on baby Duracell the inspector is going to have a crew mate 👏👏🎉🎉🥰
Congratulations, this baby boy is going to live the best life, you two will be wonderful parents, chuffed to bits for you three
Three thoughts on the galley.
- Double Sink
- A built in butchers block style chopping board at the bottom of the U
- I like the bar, but maybe a flip up ledge instead of a fixed position.
Congrats on the new crew mate, but I'm bummed that my dream of you adopting me had been dashed.
haha! you're part of the online Duracell fam :)
Fantastic news! Duracell will be a family boat ….awesome!
Congratulations! Great news, before ours came along I couldn't imagine life with kids, now I can't imagine life without them. Lovely news!
Congratulations on the pending arrival of your child. You both will be amazing parents! Such cool news
Hey beauties 😍😍😍
We have an 13 month old boy.
You are starting a wonderful adventure.
Matt, when there's no logic and only drama, just give her a hug and say everything is going to be alright. It's just the hormones.
Very happy for your
Good idea to change to the U-shaped galley. We like that. Congratulations on the baby, that is wonderful news!
I laughed out loud when I saw you working on the water tanks. Feels like it’s been years since you started those. Loving the design.
Congratulation! Children are a great gift.
I bet you thought refitting a boat was a big adventure...
Super exciting. A new crew member is on the way. Congratulations!!!
Congratulations guys on expanding the team!
When you removed the floor you would be removing a lot of diagonal strength in the floor grid.
I am sure you and your architect are on top of this.
Keep up the great work guys.
Congratulations for making the decision to expand your family!
I'm so happy for you guys. What a lucky little guy to have parents like the two of you.
Just a note from someone who has moved into a place with a small kitchen.. When you have appliances perpendicular to each other, dont forget to take into account their handles - or other protrusions. Lots of fun discovering my dishwasher wouldnt open properly because of the oven handle. All solvable, but better to solve before building :)
The redesign galley is going to be beautiful. I'm so happy for you both on the wonderful addition to your family. God bless you all, including the inspector
Noticed the tight space for the stove in front of the water tank. Remember the gimballing takes a lot of extra space behind, as well in front. Great work on the galley, it will be awesome!
Super great news! Congratulations for having a new shipmate and all the adventures that await you. Hold on to your dreams and the new child will follow.
Suggestion for the galley: You could flip the bar counter to the other side towards the rest of the galley. So it looks like a C from the side, together with the galley counter. It would free up more space to walk thought, and it's easier to reach from the galley.
I think the sink will need a back splash! What tops the back splash is the question. Perhaps a shelf to grow kitchen herbs. Congratulations on the baby! Your world is about to change….best thing ever.
Congratulations Janni and Matt. So thrilled for you. Can’t wait meet your little guy when the time comes ❤
Yaaaaay!!!!! Congrats! Baby Boy is the BEST NEWS EVER! 🎉 so stoked for you two! 🤗
Congratulations on your family expansion 😊❤
Congrats for both of you. So the first deckhand will be born very soon. Enjoy every moment together because it is more important than a galley. You can always change a galley but not the little born 😂😂😂😍😍😍
Great news! Congratulations to both of you. You cannot imagine how having a child will impact your life, but it is all good. One point: It seems at times like time goes by really slowly when you first have kids, but it actually ZOOMS by. I remember driving my older daughter to school when she was only in THIRD grade and suddenly realizing that we were already HALFWAY done with our intensive time together. She was only 9 years old but, in another 9 years, she would go away to college, and would live apart from us for the rest of her life and our lives. It was a sobering realization. Cherish your children for the brief time that you have them.
Yes we plan to spend lots of time with the little guy and will try our best to be present and cherish his childhood
Congratulations Mum and Dad. The value of unpaid crew is immeasurable😂
Congratulations! This is one lucky baby boy to have such special parents!!💕💕💕
Good news. Congratulations. Expanding the family will enrich your lives.
Congratulations! Now begins the greatest adventure of all.
Congrats on the new crew member on his way, boat is progressing slowly but surely, its a big project and your getting there well done!!
CONGRATULATIONS! Matt's comment made me laugh! "We need lots of crew!"
Congratulations on the impending arrival having kids is the best thing you can do whilst it may be the hardest as well. It is definitely worth it.
Congratulations on more crew, and making your own crew. Novel idea. With the spaces you have available, consider a remote freezer as more freezer space is really nice for extended cruising. Nice design and beautifully crafted job
Congratulations on your new crew member! I would make your bar counter the same height as the other counters. It gives you more kitchen space when you need it and people can still sit at the counter when you don’t.
Congratulations! If I were you, I would probably try to incorporate even more freezer space, it’s really invaluable to keep things fresh when you’re doing long passages. You could check out some Hallberg-Rassys for this aspect, they are really good at making space for refrigeration/freezers. I like the u-shape as well. You could also make a pull-out cutting board as counter space is always a luxury.
I know you probably already know this, but fiddles are so important, so the bar could probably double as a good fiddle.
Gratis having children was the biggest blessing of my life. My name is Carla I grew up in Coconut Grove Miami on a 50’ schooner with my parents and have been able to make sailing my life. I trained and completed in Olympic sailing in the Tornado for the 92 Barcelona, 96 Atlanta. Sailing with great sailors gave me a chance to meet like minded people from around the world .I own Coconut Grove Sails & Canvas since 88 but have spent since 2000 working summers in Sweden for a fellow Tornado sailor and the builder of the Tornado Goran Marstrom. I have been watching your channel since the start. Working at Marstrom Composites I really know how physically hard the work you are doing is. We use prepreg epoxy or carbon and autoclave. But there’s always sanding. Hope to meet you both someday.
I fond sailing is something you have to love so that world is really pretty small. When it comes to Sails, cushion and canvas perhaps that is something I can help you with. Lycka till 🙏🏻
Carla, that’s awesome! We’d love to connnect once we get to the cushions, sails, and canvas stage.😊
I like the design you landed on, i think it is better/nicer than the original design. I think maybe you could consider if you want the bartop as it is in this design, or maybe flip the bartop towards the inside, or maybe split the difference in the middle? It wil give you a better walkway? But then again, at sea it is nice to have not such a wide walkway. I think also it must not interfere with the sink, but i doubt that is an issue. Congrats on becoming parents, also thank you for pointing the camera towards the cat in the opening"scene" so we could see what mischievous things might happen! haha.
Congratulations!!! I'm sure the new crew member will be a fantastic sailor
The galley layout looks good. Congratulations on the baby on the way!
Congratulations 🎉 became a father recently, it's the best. What build wouldn't be complete without a new addition to the family
congrats!!
Bar Comment: don’t do a raised bar… continue the counter out instead. I had a raised bar in my last house and we cut it out and replaced it with a continuous counter. It created a more open concept and was so much more welcoming and useful. Love the idea of attached bar stools.
Life you guys and congrats!
Congratulations!!!! Lucky kid to have you two as parents!
First of all, I'm very happy to hear the great news!
It would be convenient if the bar could fold down when at sea or not in use. It could be secured by some fold-away braces and would be quite strong when deployed and would be out of the way when not needed.
I absolutely love what you've been doing on this project and I have to admit I found your channel because of Aladino & Maya. Keep up the great work!
Now there’s a reason to make better use of the bar space. Instead, click on the Stokke toddler chair at that side of the counter!
Congrats on the wonderful news.
Congratulations, I like the kitchen layout especially the bar idea. My kitchen has a bar, and it is where everyone that comes over ends up hanging out.
hello, I am a fervent and regular listener of your CZcams channel. I am in admiration of the work and your know-how that you carry out on Duracell!! I like all the time but I don't comment because I'm not an English speaker but the English subtitles helped me a lot!! Why haven't they been there for a few episodes? congratulations again and good luck, I can't wait to see him on the water!!😊 Best regards. Olivier.
thanks Olivier! They should be there in every episode. Sometimes it takes an hour or so for the english subtitles to appear...so if you wait an hour or so after we upload, I think you should have subtitles every time!
Congratulations 🥳🥳👶with the little Duracell crew member, I think you should make the galley to your satisfaction and ideas, I like them👍
Congrats on the soon-to-be crewmate! As to the layout, it looks cool (but crowded from a landlubber's viewpoint)---but where is the oven going? Knowing the chef---she'll want something to do some serious baking in, eh?
Heartiest congratulations to you both. I'm sure that when Lil Sweetpea comes along, he'll really be a huge help.
For the uninitiated, Sweetpea was Popeye and Olive Oyl's baby.
Congratulations on your baby boy! I hope you instill in him Matt's work ethic...it is second to none.
🎉CONGRATULATIONS 🎉 Matt your gonna love a boy following you! I have a 7 and 5. My 5 yr old laid on me under my 3/4 ton the other day saying I was way more comfortable than the cement driveway while changing a cam shaft sensor 😂. Just remember patience and that time will pass way too fast! I absolutely enjoy the quality of excellent craftsmanship you do on this project. EXCEPTIONAL 💯
Kitchen is spot on, and the relationship, WHOA!
Congratulations on your new crew member! So very, very happy for you both. You will be excellent parents. Another person for the Inspector to supervise ... I think a raise is in order.
Switch the place of the fridge for the oven. Gimbal on center. Much safer
Congrats on the baby❤
