Beth Harmon Style Analysis: The Meanings Behind the Fashion of a Genius | The Queen’s Gambit
Vložit
- čas přidán 29. 11. 2020
- In this style analysis I'll be covering Beth Harmon of the Queen’s Gambit, an orphaned chess prodigy who struggles emotionally and with addiction in a quest across the world to become the greatest chess player. I'll be covering the historical, cultural, and psychological parts of Beth’s looks that are a reflection of her inner self and inspirations that were created by costume designer Gabriele Binder.
I'll breakdown how her fashion often materializes elements of chess and capture Beth's mindset throughout her journey as she grows to be more confident, decisively chic, and sophisticated. I'll also be explaining the cultural influences that make her mod looks worldly as she takes style cues from places such as New York City, Paris, and Moscow.

I love how she looked like the pill on her worst day and the queen chess piece on her best
Wait... That's a good observation
Your first name is the name of a great Hindu story.
it was lowkey satisfying when she ran into the mean girl from her high school, at ben snyder's, which she once said she would never be caught dead in, and the mean girl is stuck in the same old town, married to the some guy she likely met in the same high school, pushing a baby stroller, while beth is travelling the world, famous and making money with her passion.
Yeah, she said she married her high-school boyfriend if I remember correctly.
Omg I never even picked up that they were in Ben Snyder’s 😭
i rejoiced at that part :D
Oh god I think about this scene all the time😍 Beth is such an inspiration
And the alcohol in the bottom crate of the stroller, signifying she was starting to become an alcoholic and unhappy with her life
she makes me want to play chess and wear 60s clothing
and i might just do that
Same here. Sadly, I'm garbage at chess, but I can still wear pretty 60s dresses :)
go for it!
@@12harrypotterfan34 i will teach u ❤️
I curently am doing that (i am horrible at Chess tho but i like it)
Yessss 60's fashion needs to go back, it's so iconic!
In conclusion, Beth is Clever & Chic.
costume design was one of the strongest points of this series imo (along with acting)
definetly
Don't forget photography, every scene was aesthetically pleasing and made sense in the context of the movie.
What I find interesting is that the pale green "home" color is also the color of the pills. And how the dress right before she spirals is that pale green with dark green accents that match the pills. I find that little detail so fascinating because it foreshadows her biggest relapse in the show.
I wonder if the costume designers intentionally dressed Benny in all black to mimic a black chess piece (knight, king, etc)
that's a good observation, I had the same feeling that that is why his garments were mostly black also. I kept looking at Beth and Benny as if they were a King/Queen. But tbh I couldn't get over his long trench coat and fedora style hat lol It really irked me since it doesn't seem like something from the sixties like everyone else's clothing. I was wishing she would speak a bit more on his fashion but im sure there was a meaning behind why they chose that apparel for him!
You could interpret his hat as a crown. If I'm not mistaken he wears it less after being beaten by Beth
That’s what i was thinking. He’s the king (or the taller pieces) of the black side, in the ending Beth dresses like the white chess pieces, the queen. He also wore a dark green shirt underneath which again matches with Beth’s light green
his outfits reminded me of the Saint of Killers from Preacher but cleaner and more modern lol
They did such an incredible job with the costuming for this series. There are so many little details that I didn't notice the first time I watched it - for instance, the light green dress when she loses the tournament in Paris (right before her downward spiral) is the same color as the pills.
this made me realize that shades of green and a muted color palette were incorporated into the entire show. they complemented her hair but also made it stand out
i definitely did not know i would get so attached to this series when i started it
Me neither!
Same
2:44 i think beth bought all three of those dresses once the show progressed to her competitive games. I love the development of this show, how she was able to afford all the clothes once she got confidence!! I think the store she shops in is called Ben Snyder's, where the mean popular girl remarked how she "wouldn't be caught dead in Ben Snyder's" yet she bumps into her there!! Love the full circle.
costume designer for this show is incredible, to the point that in the future I probably would watch anything just on the basis of their having worked on it
The fashion evolution of Beth in this series was a wonderful indicator to Beth's character development in full. They did so many good things in telling this story.
I loved the character of the adoptive mother, so hard to pin down in terms of easy characterization tropes.
Green is also a contrasting colour to red, further emphasizing her hair.
isn't blue the contrast for red?
@@avrilynravenee5143
Nope, blue contrasts orange. You can see this on many movie posters.
Who else watched this show as soon as it came out. When I finished it, I knew it was gonna extremely popular
Me! The show was incredible.
Me! I watched all the episodes the day it came out, completely fallen in love with the series I couldn't stop watching. Than I re-watched it the week later with my parents, one time wasn't enough. I'm so happy for its success, well deserved
I watch The Queen’s Gambit for the plot!
The Plot: Anya Taylor-Joy 🥰🥰
What a style icon. If I knew how to make fancams I would make one of her with XS by Rina Sawayama as the song.
that would be an edit, not a fancam 😭
That’s an edit not a fancam but it doesn’t matter really
@@ig1441 i'm curious, whats the difference?
@@lizzyswinerd2014 a fancam is a one single video of someone performing. an edit is like a bunch of videos combined of a person or character or whatever with some song choice in the back.
Love the fashion progression in this show so much. Most of the pieces are still relevant and can be easily incorporated in today’s wardrobe. I especially love that white top with the black piping she wore many times. I’m convinced it’s her favourite top haha.
Great video! What is cool about the show is that the characters repeat the clothing, which adds a realness to it. Beth herself repeated that checkered coat and a few other pieces in the show. Bennie as well with the long black leather coat.
Many scenes were shot in Berlin by the way. Bode Museum is Paris, Friedrichsstadt-Palast is Mexico and Moscau all over the city. The orphanage were also filmed there.
It's kind of poetic how the mint of the green dress her mother gave her and the mint of the pills she uses are exactly the same. The green is a representation of the tendency that Beth has to regress to the past and become almost dependant on the things that kept her safe. But she has to learn that it can be a double edged sword. You can either use it productively, like in fashion, or unproductively, like with the pills.
All her look is so chic💕
The Netflix channel made a video about "things you might have missed" and one thing that was mentioned was the pale green color (the color of the pills) which symbolizes her weakness to addiction. She wears pale green when she's struggling most to addiction, particularly when she loses to Borgov for the second time.
The person who played her is such a beauty and played the character really well. I love the design of the outfits.
Probably my favourite style of any TV show/movie character. The costume designer were very clever. I really liked how she wore cheaper clothes at the beginning, but how she still tried to find her style with those limited options (the same way as how she played the game.) Amazing show 😍
I wish you'd done her wardrobe on the day of the Ohio tournament- there was a lot there to be said and discovered
I love your video editing style, it's like you've animated the pages out of a fashion editorial; please do the fashion from The Man From UNCLE !
now I badly want 60s dresses in my collection, and hats😍
I’m surprised you didn’t mention how her angular dress at 11:30 looked like an abstracted chess piece. At least that’s what the dress’ pattern made me immediately think.
i just finished this show last night, perfect timing
I've seen this show twice already and I've never noticed how much the colour green is dominant in the show. Great eye!
This is probably my favorite series this year I enjoyed every minute of it
i've been looking for fashion analysis videos of this show ever since i watched it!!!
I'm so glad you made this video! I started to watch the show yesterday, I'm on episode 4, and loving it so far
I absolutely adore your analysis! Needless to say, I've re-watched it several more times to catch all of the nods to her ever evolving style.
This series is amazing! All the little details and hints in the costumes are great. Also I love your editing style :)
I would love it if you did a style analysis on Anna Kereninna next!!!!! 🖤🤍
Yes totally
the costuming on this show is gorgeous! loved this!
Thanks for existing
i lovee this show sm and i love how detailed it is, even down to the games they're playing and the character's sense of fashion
Wow! This was perhaps the best review of the series I've seen. Well done.
Can you do a video about how different fashion styles are influenced by our personalities?
Can you do maryln Monroe's style
The fashion on this show is immaculate. I have to rewatch it! Ann Taylor was great!
This was such a fantastic analysis. I feel a certain kinship with Beth as an individual and it was interesting to see how her clothing changed along the phases of her life. This channel continues to be one of my favourites!
I love that Netflix chose Germany to shoot the outside scenes
TQG was all shooted in scenaries and Germany museums/parks/landscape, even the orphanage is on Germany. They never went to US, Paris or Moscow
I dont knoe how but even Mexico was shot in Germany lmaoo
Shout out to all stylists and costume designers, they mold the tv shows, plays and movies
ngl her styling on her worst day is iconic. crazy eye makeup but it makes her look so good
i have no business crying over a visual representation of inner growth and yet.
love this! mind-blown!! u also are a genius!!!
you should do a style analysis on euphoria characters. more importantly jules vaugh!
Smart analysis. The fashion in this series is so aspirational, alluring, and sentimental.
yesss PERFECT TIMING- THANK YOU
I was waiting for this video thank youuu!!
I've been hearing a LOT about this show. I think I'll finally watch it. Might try to rope my mom into it.
This video is so well put together!!!
This was so brilliant
This was very well done, thank you so much
I love your content. Keep up the good work.
I love this!!!
Paris and Moscow had my favourite looks of Beth’s
Stunning video w the subtext of claiming your identity despite having a broken childhood
thankyou for this!
You have inspired me to actually start my own CZcams channel
Today will be a good day 💕
Yes!!! I'm obsesses with her
One question: doesn't the White Queen outfit also have elements from Russian fashion?
LOVE your videos!!! Pls pls do Emily from the movie 'A simple favor'!! Role Blake Lively plays. one of my fav fashions in movie characters
Beth and her plaid clothes
😍
just wanted to lt you know thatur waldorf video only has some music as audio? nd i believe it had a voiceover?
I love your videos but it's worth pointing out I couldn't read the text on the white background in this one! I think the font might be too small
Are you gonna analyze the styles in Scream Queens? (Only season 1 lol)
She inspires me to be smart and pretty yet fashionable 🤩
Awesome! I Love this movie so much! Thank you for your job! I Love Beth. She's amazing chess player! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Style analysis of Mrs Maisel please!
I felt like her style was great because we all love nostalgic looks of the 1950, 60’s and 70s but it was out of place for the time period. I could be wrong but I felt she seemed very “50’s” for most of Queens Gambit, which was late 60’s. I thought it was to help her stand out initially that she was a little lost, hard to fit in but also not use to fashion after wearing uniforms for years. Maybe I’m wrong about the period, but it drove me crazy trying to figure it out! Only towards the end was she more of the times! Idk 🤷🏽♀️
Do style analysis of Jane Sloan from The Bold Type. She is a great character. Sutton is also nice.
I know you guys don’t do guys clothes but could you guys do an analysis of chuck bass’ fashion 🙏🙏
YES
I was like, euhhh do i wanna watch this show or not? But you made me wanna start the show now
The show is amazing, you should really watch it!
@@CoKiEsAnDcReAm07 yeah i should!
Nice
I didn't even pick up the fact that most of her outfits were checkered pattern. I just want to wear 60s clothes forever
Anya Taylor-Joy also starred in 'Last Night in Soho', set in today & 1960's London. The fashion & makeup are incredible, tied together by a pretty good storyline!
Notice in the beggining, as an orphan, she’s dressed more simple and boring, almost like a pawn. Then later at the end she’s a queen
An INTJ queen
something about me is I hate when people comment on other peoples style eg in Emily in Paris I didn't care if she always wore all those patterns. recently found your channel and love how you explain things can you explain why how a person chooses to express themselves is unstylish isn't it just an expression are there really rules? idk if I sound like an illiterate, love ur channel though👍🏾
I guess what I want to know is why fashion critics exist, if it floats your boat wear it, if not keep your opinions to yourself but I know that's not how the fashion industry is- so what makes style is it really a group of big shots giving their approval?
Her fashion is a substitute. You only know it from experience.
I kinda hate how this show makes addiction seem like something you could use as some sort of "tool" whild you remain in control, and then just drop it when you're ready to move on.
after watching this video i think i am gonerewatch theshow, such a stunningcostume design
what is stolen? it comes from steal/stolidity?
Your voice reminds me of Cassie from Euphoria ✨
Can anyone please tell me why they used to give those addicting tranquilizers to the kids in orphanage?
Irrelevant to her fashion but, I don't understand how Jolene is deemed as Beth's "guardian angel" even tho she is the reason (or at least the one that triggered) Beth has an addiction/addictions.
Not on purpose she didn't know what they were, just like Beth. Just that they were best at night. Jolene did it and she turned out fine and probably the other children just in moderation. Beth just lacked self control and over did it. And I think the drinking addiction would have been inevitable because of her mothers death. And she's not a guardian angel, just a friend. Jolene said that herself.
Cause Jolene offered Beth to give her her tuition cash to help her go to Moscow. Jolene cares for her, cause that’s what families does
@seaqueen2021 by Beth she is
@seaqueen2021 u care way too much about what I think settle down
@seaqueen2021 yet here u r again
♥️
even the towel scene looks great on her.
and yes im a simp
Your old videos are missing your voice overs
Perfect narration voice
As Roxette once said " dress for success"
I absolutely love this channel and have watched all your videos, but the way you talk. God, i really have to choose between missing a great vid or bearing the voice. It literally hurts my ears.
seriously why does she speak in such a choppy way?
I thought i was the only one who felt this way...
Who the hell is the narrator? I'm absolutely in a trance.
Tôi yêu phố mai
This video helped inspire me to make my own Beth Harmon lookbook! czcams.com/video/DaJixck67Iw/video.html
It's Pawn Sacrifice plastered onto Mad Men with a fake female character like Cameron Howe in Halt and Catch Fire. The top-ranked woman in chess is rated 2650 and not even in the top 100. She'd beat Carlsen one out of six times according to the rating system.
Judit Polgar was the youngest ever gm when she got the title and peaked no 8 world what are you talking about ??
@@minty6131 And she failed miserably against the top players. Beth Harmon doesn't exist in the real world. How do they continue her story without making her even more unrealistic? Polgar is not even in the top 100 anymore. Rreal women don't care about chess and would rather marry or give birth to a champion than become one.
Oh i just checked your CZcams account. No need to reply, you’re pretty messed up in the head and debating your rhetoric would be like talking to a brick wall. Bye 👋
