  • McCartney's seemingly simple bass line is actually a lot more complicated than it looks! He made slight variations to the main line that made it difficult to perform, but I believe I have accurately captured every note, even down to his mistakes in the outro! I have seen it said that John used his Rickenbacker and George his Gretsch Duo Jet on this song, but I clearly hear them both using the J-160E. I believe that John played his acoustic while George played it plugged into the Vox. Following along with the original, I also added heavily reverbed stick clicks in the middle eight. I performed all of the instruments on this track, so everything you are hearing is me.
    Instruments Used:
    Guitars: Gibson J-160E Standard
    Bass: Hofner 500/1 '62 Reissue Violin Bass
    Drums: Native Instruments Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl

      +mattiboo I will. I've been learning on a nylon stringed acoustic and the other day I bought my first steel stringed one - but now the chords don't sound at all correct on the steel strings! It's so odd.

    Ok thanks mattiboo I am thankful for the advice and I will have a look at that matter after my guitar arrives on Christmas Day. :) hope u have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year and I hope to make more videos once I have the gretsch. This will make recording much easier because the classical guitar can't really be heard over the backing tracks. For example if u take a look at my attempt at "if I needed someone " you might see that I am struggling to be heard over George's rickenbacker 12 string. The gretsch will make it much easier for recording purposes as well as moving on in my guitar skill. Merry Christmas!

    I was thinking of getting that J-160E but it's cost way too much for me I can't afford $2k lol so I think I'm just gonna get a Epiphone EJ-200CE.. I heard they have kinda similar sound and it's way cheap.

    • @mattiboo

      The trick is to hit the A string with the C note and hammer on to C#, then play the A chord on the D, G, and B string, then hit the A string and do the hammer on again.

    Nice work.The Gibson J160E was used quite a bit on the Please Please Me LP. A lot people, including me, thought George was using his Gretsch Duo Jet, and John, with his Rickenbacker 325, more than they actually were used. Paul has a cool bass part on "Secret". Always melodic though initially, he felt lumbered with the bass.Did you use your Audio Technica 2035 to record the instruments? Seems like a decent alternative to buying (or renting) a Neumann U47.

    • @mattiboo
      @mattiboo  Před 7 lety +2

      Yes! They both used their J-160Es quite a lot on the first album. It makes for an interesting sound to have the electric guitar sound coming from the left speaker and the acoustic guitar leakage onto the vocal mic on the right channel. I used the AT2035 to record the instruments in this video and it does have a very nice condenser sound that works well for what I am trying to do. A Neumann U47 is very expensive!

      Yes, I've seem Nuemann U47s priced at $15,000. I believe that is a tube microphone. Nuemann makes a U47 FET version for about 4,000.

      Move each finger slowly and individually until you get an understanding for what needs to happen when you change chords. Try to find what fingers don't move during a chord change and keep them planted. Don't give up, you'll get it with some practice!
