  • Learn how to catch trout in this beginners' guide to fishing. The damselfly is a popular food source for trout and other fish in British Columbia’s lakes year-round. Freshwater fishing expert Brian Chan covers the life cycle of the damselfly and fishing strategies for targeting trout feeding on the damselfly hatch.

Brian shows examples of damselfly patterns, the optimal gear set- up, and retrieval techniques. The angler’s goal is to imitate the behaviour of the damselfly so that trout will snap up the fly.

I tie a nice olive damsel larvae that swims - that has melted monofilament eyes that I make. Trout gobble them up - well if they are around. I tie a nice mature damsel in blue and black stripes too. That one I trolled on the surface with a full floating line in Lenice. : )

Do you add weight to your damsel imitation flies?

This is a bit late, but it's currently $55 for an annual licence, $36 for 8 day and $20 for 1 day for non-BC residents. We hope you enjoyed your trip to Alberta!

Wouldn’t it be more productive to fish from the bank and retrieve the same direction as the naturals?
