Jump In events might just be the best collection-building strategy for you, depending on your current collection and a few other factors.
Here's how you can make the most out of Jump In events, which packs to pick for maximum value and how to track your progress so you don't miss out on extra rares.
If you're wondering where this would fit in with my general Ixalan collection building strategy, I would recommend potentially doing Jump In events before quick drafting for new players who want to build a wider Standard collection, but not for players with good Premier Draft results.

I’m about 2 weeks into magic. Arena is my first experience with mtg. Loving the videos, so helpful. Spelunking Crafting was my first jump-in deck. That was a brutal experience as a new player. Took me several matches to finally beat someone with it. But I’m having a lot of fun.
Welcome aboard!
I am a sucker for the jump-in event. It feels like a pretty level playing field.
And that kind of low power level game is usually more fun too.
Jump Start was way more fun in my opinion. And JS cards were more impactful and relevant even today
I'm hooked on the Jump In events too. I haven't played in a looOOoong time, and this is a great way to familiarize myself with the new sets and mechanics. It also gives tons of inspiration for new deck ideas.
I have fallen in love with these Jump Ins....I just came back to Arena. I'm annoyed none of my War of the Spark or Throne of Eldraine deck codes work anymore for Historic, but this let me build a Pirate Red/Blue, two White/Black Decks, and a fantastic Blue/Black and Green/Black deck for Standard.
Seriously gonna do these each day now, honestly fun and efficient for filling out the collection

Ooo I actually love this concept. I wish I didn't threw away my 5 jump in tokens so carelessly without noting what decks I picked! xD
you can pay 1000 coins to enter again😎 so you can collect more decks
Once you have a strong deck at jump in, you can easily earn 4 daily wins.
It comes in handy when a new season starts and you are short on new cards and can't build a strong deck that can win in Standard.
The check mark in the upper right corner of the pack preview tells you that you've picked that pack before.
Edit: this game was made on a potato with a potato by a potato, so it appears the checkmark is inconsistently applied.
Has this actually been confirmed anywhere? I haven't seen anything about it. Your suggestion would make sense as a feature, but it obviously isn't working if that's the intention!
I've seen the orange check mark on some, but not others I know I've picked.
i love jump in cos it's so casual friendly but i've been getting slightly less value out of the packs cos im mythic complete on WOE and BRO and have all commons/uncommons for a couple others.. but i have very little in LTR so im gonna go all in on this when they bring back Jump Into Middle Earth this month
I don't drafting at all, started to play in september after a really long break and all my decks was out of rotation, so "jump in" and few packs from redeem codes were a bless.
Good thing about it is that it dont expire when new set arrives, i'am still using faeries from previuos set.
Bad thing you will need to replace 40 cards somehow if you want to switch to "jump in" of new set or 1/4 of all your decks will be broken..🗿
It is 45k of gold btw for 2 month of constant playing, so you will NEED to draft or donate if you want each new set. For me, its skip ixalan, wait for new ravnica.
24k gold to find all of the new decks yikessss. But it was cool seeing that Excavation, Counters, Soliers and Toxin have some cool Rares
Hello I am just new to mtga and found your insightful videos, I was just wondering I saw the standard and alchemy discussion, so if I only want to play standard is it still worth playing this mode for cards to use in standard ? thankss for the video again
Welcome to the game! I would say it's still worth it because there are so many other great Standard cards you can get from Jump-In, and once you've picked the Alchemy packs once, you shouldn't have to see them again so you won't have to worry about them.
I started Jump In during lotr, got all those at least once. Then during woe I had to contend with the backend to get 1 each of ALL packets. All told that's was around 70k gold. However, now it's about 7-10k per set to keep up depending on luck and which packets you want twice or more. It is a solid low pressure step up from stater decks for newbies too. The variety means you have a small headstart many new decks each release.
Wait.. If i resign from "jump in" and make new deck do i keep old?
@@e1py766 you keep all the cards as part of your collection for the other game modes that you construct decks for. Can even collect more copies and there's chances of getting different rare/mythics depending on the packet to add value to picking twice or more. Each time you retire and start again you select another two packets worth of cards sort of at random.
@@Arkavien Holly cow, i am stupid.. I thought its something like one of those shadow events where you lose cards after it ends.
Thats actually very generous for f2p game.
They tell you on the left side in the description. @@e1py766
Im completely new to magic and i been watching a lot of your videos, thnks.
I have a question. Is it necesarr to click “Add to Decks” for keeping the deck or all those cards are your automatically?
Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks for the comment, I hope my videos have been helpful. When you do Jump-In events the cards are automatically added to your collection. If you click 'Add To Decks' it will also save a copy of the deck in your deck lists. Although Jump-In decks are only 40 cards, so you would need to add extra cards to use the deck in 60-card formats like Standard.
@@gameschooldadMTG of course! Your channel is great and definitely in my top 3. I been learning all the basic this last week before even starting to play (i like to prepare before starting new stuff).
I saw that there is Toxic (venom) decks and i would love to make my first one a Toxic one (specially since im a Biologist who work with venomous snakes in real life). And i love te art of the phyrexian archetype.
Is there any chance you could help me with a recommendation for a budget/new player deck with that please?
Whenever you can, no hurries. I would appreciate it a lot.
New subscribers by the way. Saludos! 🇲🇽🤙🏾
I always loved MTG ,i used to play Magic 2013 in ps3 where i had a mono blue deck that would burn enemy deck. Love your videos and having a blast in Magic Arena. As a new player how much gold should i spent in Jump in event. I have 16k so far.
There's no fixed rule, but if you want to build a varied collection of Standard legal cards, I'd keep playing Jump In events and try to pick different packs every time at least once each, especially if you enjoy the format.
@@gameschooldadMTG Thanks ,will do that and note which ones i've picked. Cheers.
There is a good chance to get Virtue of Loyalty and Virtue of Persistence from Jump In. Which is imo higher than getting these cards randomly by buying packs.
So ... Jump In is good in getting certain cards without wasting a valuable Wildcard.
Virtue of Loyalty is in "Charmed" and Virtue of Persistence in "Bittersweet"; with a 20% chance to get them in each.
Hey, whats is the tick/ticked mark on top of some of the cards when you hoover over some of the packs? Thanks
I believe it shows you if you have picked the Minipack at least once before
I'd love to think it's whether you've picked that pack before, which would be a perfect feature to add, but if that's the intention, it doesn't work at all!
@gameschooldadMTG yeah, ive noticed that. Thanks.
How do you know which ones are alchemy? Just the LotR packs?
Yes basically it's just the LotR packs that are Alchemy-only cards.
I'm doing the Jump into Middle Earth at the moment and continue doing it after having picked everything already because it still gives me more cards and rares per 1000 gold compared to boosters so I'll have the full 4 cards per cards (of the ones included in the event) faster
Do you think my line of thinking is right?
That works until you start to get shown only packs that you have 4x of the included rares, then you'll start to get just a few gems back instead of a new rare.
@@gameschooldadMTG You're right thanks👍🏻
I think I don't play enough so that this will happen tho xD
are the jump in cards alchemy only?
I've been doing a couple of jump in events and noticed that none of them were valid for standard.
There are some that are Alchemy-only, but the majority of them should be Standard legal as well.
Are there any new jump in packs since ixilan came out?
There are 11 new ones. I cover them all briefly in this video.
Great idea. Anyone know of a list, online, of set symbols? No, haven't memorized all of them yet. LOL
You can Google them, or if you just go to the store to buy packs, they're all along the top of that screen.
@@gameschooldadMTG I Googled, but couldn't find anything yet. I can take a store screen shot. Thanks
you don't need to write it down, the 40 card decks get added to your deck list and the names of the packs are in the deck title
You can add them to your decks if you want to, as long as you have spare space for them. It's still easier to have something separate to refer to when you're picking your next packs. You can't see your decklists at the same time.
I looked over all my options and chose none as the cost to enter and rewards were worse than simply buying packs.I tried many jump in last month and I got mostly junk and many non standard cards.I did get some good Standard cards but since the jump in mixes up your choices each time your going to get a mess of cards that really accomplishes very little.Everything is priced accordingly better options better rewards costs more AND you have to win 6/7 games just to gain like 200 extra gems so hardly a good payoff for top end success.
Overall my experience has seen that WOTC is just very cheap there is very little rewards given for anything by far your best choice is simply getting the Mastery Pass.
So when do the events end? Ive done a few of the same one I think. I get 20 to 40 wins but when I resign no reward
You get the cards you pick immediately and one extra uncommon card after your first win. You can keep playing if you want, but there aren't any further rewards, and you can resign at any time.
Oh nice thank you for the info@@gameschooldadMTG
Man , this is rough. Tried the jump in instead of spending my gold on packs, went into the jump in and lost 10 times in a row, just seems like everybodies deck is just better than mine even tho there random. I feel like using my gold on 10 packs is better, I can grind out 10k gold a week which allows me to buy 20 packs which gives me some rare cards to Specific cards to build good decks and also lets me progress to the gold pack which jump in doesnt.
As far as the draft, that isn't even a option for me because I'm not willing to pull up all types of spreadsheet and other nonsense to compete in there
You get more rares from Jump In events than you do from packs, even without the wins. The main benefit of packs is to get other rares and wildcards specifically.
How does 10k = 20 packs?
But jump-In says it gives alchemy cards. So doesn't that mean it's bad for standard players then?
That means it won't give anything that has rotated out of Alchemy, and there are LotR packs available, but you don't have to choose them. I'd still choose them once so they don't keep showing the same ones.
Had an unpleasant surprise with Jump in today. Chose a Wandering packet for the Silverback Elder mythic which I didn't have in my collection (previously, I checked the packet contents on Mtga Zone). After I won my game, I checked my collection for the Silverback. It wasn't there. It felt like a waste of a token. 😢
Was Mtga Zone wrong? Game bug? Anybody had the same problem?
Some of the packs have alternate rares... you most certainly got a different rare. Cheers!
@@brianfeeley6140 Thanks for the information, have a good day!
Waste of gold for me. It keeps offering me repeat minipacks I've already picked like 4 times and I only get one from the new set in 1 out of 6 packs. It feels like they disabled the "guaranteed new pack if you don't own all minipacks".... And YES I've been keeping track of all my packs for the past year (every single one and whether it was 1st or 2nd), I have picked literally every single minipack except the 10 or so new ones. This event is broken for me, it used to work before idk whats going on... HUGE HUGE dislike. Good for newer players I guess, but thats it.
Strange that it seems to do that for you. They might have changed something, but it still seems to show new packs to me that I haven't chosen before.
I'll give an actual example:
- 1st few minipack options I've gotten a couple of days ago: Arcanist, Muscle and Resurrected.
( When 1.-2.Sep.2022.: picked 4 Arcanist minipacks [2nd 2nd 2nd 1st],
2.Sep.2022.: picked 2 Muscle minipacks [1st 2nd]
16.Nov.2022.: picked 2 Resurrected minipacks [1st 1st] )
Can someone please explain how this is possible, all three options being minipacks I've picked multiple times before, when I'm missing all new Ixalan minipacks and should technically be offered at least one as option?
@@gameschooldadMTG The only explanation I have for this is they might have added some new lands to the minipacks and now they technically count as "new" minipacks. Even though they have the same name as the 1year old minipacks.
This system couldn't have worse UI/UX. Classic MtGA.
Seems fine to me. What do you find so bad about it?
Ugly, the formats are confusing, buggy, the loading is too long and frequent, challenging someone to a 40-deck duel shows my 60 card decks as selectable, time wasting transitions, among other things.
And challenging friends straight up doesn't work.
Isn't it only for alchemy format tho?
There are the LotR Alchemy packs, and everything included is Alchemy-legal, but you can still pick packs from the most recent 6 standard sets.
@@gameschooldadMTG nice nice, cheers for the reply.
