  • Here's the optimal strategy that I'm going to follow to maximise my Murders At Karlov Manor set collection over the next few months using a combination of Draft events, Jump-In events and buying packs. This strategy gets me to 96% complete (or more) for Standard sets and it can do the same for you in future sets too!
    This video covers Premier Drafts, Quick Drafts, Jump-In, Midweek Magic, the Mastery Pass and when to open your precious packs to make the most of duplicate protection and get all the cards you want for Standard Constructed play.
    Is your strategy different at all? Let me know in the comments...

    Complete F2P, get my 15 wins/day. With gold + packs + ICRs ~750 cards per month. 15 wins at ~70% win rate is 21-22 games every day. Will try JUMP IN to see if that improves or lessens gold value. Good video. Thanks for sharing!

    Here is my set progress for LCI:
    I completed 14 premier drafts, 14 quick drafts. I averaged 4.57 wins, and 615gems/draft (payout).
    I played 19 standard events, averaged 383.33 gems, averaged 4.42 wins.
    I have 200/256 rares and 50/88 mythics. This set went OK, I did better with wild of eldraine.
    If I only did quick drafts I would have gotten higher percentage (premier draft win rate was MUCH worse)
    Standard events went well I used mono red and got 7 wins 4times.
    With the new draft boosters, I think quick draft might be better. You can probably average 4-5 rares per draft + 1 pack from winning. Which already pays for itself by entering.
    I used draftsmith twice in draft. Otherwise I learned from Numot, gomletX, and NicklaiBolas. (Just watching videos seeing what they prioritize).
    I also used gems to get the mastery pass which helped a lot, (I saved gems by using gold for quick drafts and then buying the mastery pass later) I believe I had 60-70 levels by the time I got the mastery pass.
    Thanks for reading! Hope this helps

    WARNING to anyone planning to do Jump-in and then Quick draft. Jump-in contains some "bomb" limited rares that you will almost certainly want to take in draft. So I would not recommend filling up to 4 copies of each jump-in rare prior to doing quick drafts. Maybe stop at 1-2. Otherwise you are going to lose out on value for your cost of entry.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 4 měsíci +7

    Because this video was largely geared toward constructed players (which is how most players usually enjoy this game), I agree with the value assessments regarding pack value and your returns from drafting rewards. I just wanted to add that for those rare weird folks who only enjoy limited (cough, me, I'm mostly just talking about me), the gem evaluation plays a larger factor than the pack rewards. In this scenario, quick drafts provide better value until you hit 4 wins. In other words, while the 3 win rewards in premier drafts look nice because it jumps up suddenly in value from 250 gems to 1000, you're essentially paying the cost of 2 drafts for only 1 drafting experience. This means even at 3 wins, you're still getting negative value in gem rewards because 1000-750 is only 250 gems. Compare that to playing QD, getting 3 wins, a 300 gem payout, and still have enough to play another draft, even if that second draft goes south and you get 0 wins in it. From 4 wins on, however, the payout for premier drafts outspeed the rewards from QD, so if you can hit 4 wins + consistently, premier drafts will be better value.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Yeah, it's definitely a different story if you're only interested in drafting. I know there are also lots of drafters out there, and sometimes I really enjoy it too :)

    I am a little annoyed that I didn’t know about the jump in pack protection. I think I need to start working on that now. In addition, I feel like now I should just always have a quick draft premier draft and jump in event going for collection building sake I’ve got 100 K gold 22K gems dozens of wild cards, but I am off-balance with the economy again due to store packs plus gold packs being different from packs in the limited environment.

      Don't ever waste gems on sealed. They're nowhere near as gem-efficient as prem or quick. Not even experienced players/streamers like wasting time on them. Only if there's opens do they use them to train. Unless you have a crazy win%, like 80-90%, but even then... If you're that good, why waste time on sealed when you could just triple your earnings in premdraft?

    Mkm is the first set where I decided to try new strategy for gold spending. For context I play historic/explorer and in those formats you very rarely need new cards. So what I usually do is spend 90k gold on packs and hoard gld until next set. Between set you make about 80-100k gold from 4 daily wins. And it was a stable way to get 55-60% of rares and mythics as well as 16-20 wildcards. With MKM I spent my 90k gold allowance on 9 premier drafts, they went reasonably well, I got to 11.5k gems, so I figured might as well draft with gems until I get to 3.4k for next set mastery, there's even a chance to go infinite! Well I went 1-3 in 6 of my last 7 drafts. It was very inefficient wat of spending gems. So right now I've spent the same amount as I would've with 90 packs, but I'm left with: less % of rares and mythics than I would've got, less wildcards, more vault progress and slight distaste towards the variance of drafting. I don't envy newer players or those who play their nly standard, I'm so happy that my investment into UR historic wazrds deck let me play for almost 2 years now.

      @@gameschooldadMTG MKM wasn't my first first draft, but the first format I took seriously. I studied the meta, and in general I would say I understand what to pick. It's just sometimes opponent plays better or has better cards and you can't do much about it. Out of all 18 losses I had tn the past 7 drafts I can pin point meyabe 2-3 punts on my end. And in general I understand where the enjoyment for drafters comes from, it's just sometimes Arena's prize structure is prohibitive for not just having fun, but getting something out of the draft. I'll probably be back to drafting next set, or dunno maybe this MKM still, as I have around 200k gold "in reserve" (that's also why spending only 90k on sets payed of, I completely skipped LOTR and have a very nice money cussuon if I really need gold for something).

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 4 měsíci

      It depends! If you do Jump-In events, you might be collecting some cards from older Standard sets and some Karlov Manor cards too, but the value is decent and you can do that right away. For Quick Draft, you have to wait just over a week if you want to draft the new set, but the number of rares you get for your entry fee is most likely to be a little lower (unless you do above average in the matches).

    that's a lot of work to keep up with the game. Master Duel is a lot more forgiving, i guess that if i want to play Arena the laziest way would be to play Standard Brawl then.

      Standard being 3 years now is great for us casual players; I hadn't played arena in over two years and was still able to build most of a fun standard brawl deck when I came back because of the extended standard. This lets me play fun games while earning my gold that I'm saving up for MH3 (I want those fetches for timeless lol and I think it'll be a good set for arena overall).

  • @jayjayhooksch1

    Agree with almost everything you said here... but personally still prefer quick draft to premier, but will still play 1 or 2 premier drafts each month, usually using draft tokens. BTW: I noticed with my new acct (7 weeks old now) that the "idea" that arena only offers you jump-in decks not yet selected might be broken (or wrong)? By week 2 I had 4 haughty djinns... and then had the Arcanist deck offered to me at least 2 or 3 more times! (I probably only played about 12 jump-in's total?) Cheers!

    • @pointyheadYT
      @pointyheadYT Před 4 měsíci +2

      Yeah, Jump In's "guaranteed to contain one never before picked pack out of three" used to be a bit broken for me after Baldur's set came out. I think introducing big alchemy sets kinda messed with the algorithm. It has been fixed somewhat with the recent Karlov's set though, found new packs in 5/6 tries.
      Still, that one try worries me. Opened Onslaught, Resurrected and Stampede, all old packs. Before today, I'd already picked up 5x Onslaught's, 3x Resurrected and 6x Stampede packs. Of which 4x Onslaughts and Stampedes were picked right after dominaria released. So there shouldn't have been any chance for all of them to appear in one choice. 😢
      This is why I'm sceptical of advising Jump In's to older players. It's great for new players though, who have no collection and don't need to worry about being forced to pick the same pack 5+ times.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah if you have completed the rares for MKM, there isn't any point in still buying regular packs. If you still have some mythics to collect and want them, you could spend your gold on mythic packs instead. If not, then the best thing to do is to save your gold for the next set. If you have spare gems to spend, the best thing to put them on is the mastery pass, or events rather than packs.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Because drafting is effectively gambling with your resources, I would recommend getting comfortable with games that don't have an entry fee to start with so you're avoiding the added risk. When you're used to general tactics, deck building and all that stuff, I'd recommend finding out about drafting strategies and trying some Quick Drafts first. Don't expect to win much at the beginning, but things should improve over time.

    • @pointyheadYT
      @pointyheadYT Před 4 měsíci +3

      Once you complete 100% of your collection, you'll start getting +20gems and +40gems from all extra rares and mythics you get from packs/rewards. That adds up to a lot if you're a active player. If you're raredrafting in premdraft, thats essentially free 200-300gems before even starting to play your first game with the deck. Great for gem farming basically.
      But you don't really need to go out of your way to 100% every set. There's a lot of unplayable rares which just aren't worth spending WC's on. I myself only 100%-ed DMU and even that was only because I got extremely lucky in premdrafts. Wasn't aiming for completion.

    Well considering I did the entire Mastery and got all my gold and am nowhere near making a set of any kind there is no such thing as f2p.
    I started with Eldrain and we are already into 2 more sets past Eldrain and I don't have Eldrain or ixalaan not even remotely close.A single card is NOT a set nobody plays single cards in a deck you often need 4x or at least 2-3x some legendaries.
    As for the Mastery it is not really that amazing a lot of the cards you get from it are non played cards and nobody cares about orbs or card style stuff.
    Here is the thing playing f2p that is never mentioned and that is you MUST open packs because you NEED the cards to play lmao.
    Secondly it takes TIME and by th time you get some playable cards.....welp a NEW set is now out so the cost never stops coming.
    Over 6 games there is 3 wins 3 losses so on average your getting 3 wins.The difference is that some people who spend already know the best cards and are fast picking cards in draft.I have to sit and read cards and often take too long so drafts are just bad for me.
    In general the rewards from this game are VERY weak especially since these are digital no value products not like having actual paper cards you hold and own forever.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 4 měsíci +2

      I have lots of videos explaining f2p strategies that work pretty well for most people. I don't know why it would be any different for you. Even on my second account that I don't often play on, I can build fun decks and enjoy the game whenever I want for free.
      I don't actually know why you would think digital products have no value. I have all the cards I could want right now and I can play the game whenever I want, without having to worry about physical cards being lost, damaged, sorted or stored. That's a pretty valuable asset to me.

  • @sexyitalian891
    @sexyitalian891 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Honestly I find this kind of thing to be a bit disingenuous. I am a player that has spent more than 6k CAD on the game, and my total collection across all Arena is just over 50%, 50.32 or something. Yes, if you happen to be a draft whizz, and can regularly break even or get to 6 or 7 wins, than yeah, that's the best way. However, that doesn't present the entire story. Draft is NOT easy, even with mods telling you what to pick. A lot of the people that are great at draft have been playing MTG for years and on top of that draft for years. For a BRAND NEW player, this strategy will be IMPOSSIBLE.
    There is simply no way to practice it enough, no matter how much you watch someone else draft to get these type of results. Not for a new player. I suck at draft and have major FOMO when it comes. I get ridden with anxiety over my choices and make mistakes. Even though I've been playing 2 years now, I still don't have the knowledge to look at a card and think about what's good for my deck, look at all the specific stats and abilities of a creature, and then determine how good it is for its mana cost and rarity and then look at a curve and somehow splice it all together to create a great deck.
    A person new to MTG is going to be even worse. Unless they're a pro at card games in general, the draft experience is going to be one that is pay to play, and if you're not at least cracking 5-6 wins reliably, its cheaper to just buy gems and open packs. I've only gotten 7 wins 2 times in draft ever. One was from an amazing pull with Minsc and Boo from Baldurs gate and the other was a seemingly not that great deck that somehow made it in sealed. That's it. A new player could probably expect to spend over 20-40k gems and likely break even only a handful of times.
    For a free to play new player, draft is not realistic, and without draft, or cracking packs, its not possible to build the collection, period.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I already have a video showing how much a player can unlock for free without drafting at all, and that's still pretty significant.
      Also, even with a 50% win rate in draft games, you can get better value than just buying packs on average. You don't need to get 6 or 7 wins for it to be worth it.
      I'm not exceptionally good at the game and it works for me.

    • @MartinSparkes-BadDragon
      @MartinSparkes-BadDragon Před 4 měsíci

      I have been working on the following strategy and while not 100% ftp, it fits what I want to get out of the game. I don't enjoy draft, and play 98% standard B01.
      1. I buy the pre-order Mastery pass and the preorder 50 packs for each standard legal set - I buy mastery pass only for sets like LotR
      2. I bank ALL my gold for the next set
      3. Unless I am feeling in the mood to play more, I only aim to get 4 wins and complete each days daily quest.
      For MKM I had 110000 gold so cracked 163 packs on launch day, plus 16 gold packs.
      This translated into a 73% set completion on launch day, with 100% Common, 60% uncommon, %60% rare, and 30% mythics (Calculated playset numbers)
      I banked 14M, 33R, 71U, and 48C wildcards
      From the mastery pass packs i am going to increase my rares by about 26 cards + 7 Wildcards, and Mythics by 3 cards + 3 Wildcards + the 10 mythic ICR's from the mastery pass
      This will allow you to craft 1-2 brand new competative decks per set. Having done this for 2 years, I am now able to play almost every deck out there.
      The key thing to take away from this is getting good decks in Arena is not a sprint race.

    • @delconagher12
      @delconagher12 Před 4 měsíci +1

      A fool and his money..... Seriously dude. I have spent like $20 on the game. I basically have all the standard decks I want. You aren't going to get good at drafting if you don't play. Been a 60% drafter the last two sets. That's coming from a vet player who started around Strixhaven but have been playing from Ice Age to Mirrodin then stopped. I absolutely know nothing about drafting.
      If you are willing to play that much. Might as well make 2 other accounts and just do the 4 daily win for each account. I did that for a year with my 2 other accounts. That's how I practiced drafting. I still got like 200k gold from those accounts. Which I use for future sets and only for drafting practice only.
