    This video is an example of a perfect you tube video; short, no irrelevant information, stays on the topic, and very practical. Thank you.

      His whole video was irrelevant. 😂
      No demonstration, no anything but talk. I have my ways of sharpening and if I were to make a video, I would at least show the viewers. What if it's an office dweeb or someone among those types? Or a female whose daddy is no longer around or whose husband left? Context is everything.

    I have a new trench spade that I use for digging rather than shoveling. It’s new because the edge was so dull, it was impossible to use. After precisely following your video’s instructions, I’m able to use it, thank you!!!

    Thank you so much for explaining that a metal file only cuts one direction!!!! I’m a machinist and I cringe every time I see someone use a file going both directions! If I see it in person I proceed to chew ass shortly after lol. One of my biggest pet peeves ever!

      Now after that little rant. A flap disc on an angle grinder would achieve the same results much quicker if you don’t get crazy with it. Small light grinds and dipping the blade in water often to cool after each grinder pass if nothing else as to keep the temper of what I’m guessing is close to spring steel intact. That process would most likely cut your initial sharpening down from 20 minutes to 5, and subsequent sharpenings from 5 minutes down to 2. Just saying. Great video!

      You're welcome for the file advice, funny how some people don't know that. My Dad taught me that as a kid.
      Yep a grinder would make it faster, but I don't have one so the hand file is my option!!

      @@StoneyAcresGardening They did a test on youtube and the result is that it does not matter if you use file one in only one direction or both ways...on the contrary if you use it both ways it cuts a little faster

    • @RichardGilbert2727
      @RichardGilbert2727 Před rokem

      @@jakubthedanger8158 Doesn't the type of file matter? If the cutting bars run one way, it cuts on the push; if they are crosshatched, it is designed to cut on the push and the pull.

    Thank you for this video. It took me a few days and many tries to find a CZcams on sharpening shovels.

    Funny you say it isn't a sword but you are putting on a similar kind of edge. Not too sharp it just turns over/dulls right away but just enough to do the job and keep an edge during heavy use.

    This is a very clear, very information-dense instructional video that is easy to follow. However I do have a question… My understandiing is you sharpen the inside of a shovel, not the outside? Have you tried it the other way on other shovels? Does it work better this way?

    thoughts on sharpening shovels with a bench grinder? (just because I have one and hand filing sends shivers up my spine like fingernails on a chalk board :)

      It's certainly possible. Or you can use a coarse hand/bench stone. It's be a little slower, but end up with a better edge in the end anyways.

      Joey, I'm sorry but I'm the wrong person to ask about that. I don't use a tiller in my garden so I've never had to sharpen the tines. I did a quick search and it looks like there are a few videos on how to do it here on CZcams. Good Luck!!

    • @Swarm509

      You may if you are using a sharpening stone, depending on the type. Usually I even see those used dry or just with some water to take away the filings. With a file just brush it off from time to time to get rid of the filings.
